    1.1 International Electrical Symbols

    This symbol signifies that the instrument is protected by double or reinforced insulation.

    PRODUCT FEATURES

    2.1 Description

    TheAEMC® Models 6501 and 6503 are compact, self-containedhand-crankedmegohmmeters.Theyarepracticalanddependableinstrumentsdesigned forabroad rangeofplantandfieldserviceapplications,suchasacceptancetestingandpreventivemaintenanceofwiring,cables,switchgear,andmotors.Theeasyhand-crankedoperationprovidesasteadyrectifiedDCvoltageoutputacrosstheentirerangeforconsistentlyreliablereadings.

    Thesemegohmmeters incorporateabuilt-ingeneratorandacon-stantDCvoltagecircuit toprovideastableoutputandgivedirectinsulationresistancereading.

    TheModels6501/6503haveauniqueauto-ranging featurewhichexpands the scale by x10 and almost doubles the scale length.Whenthepointerreachesneartheendofscale,theauto-rangingfeatureactivates,returningthepointertothebeginningofthescalewiththex10redLEDindicatoron.

    Insulation resistance is indicated with a rugged taut-band metermovement on a logarithmic scale. The indicator scale is easy toread.

    OPERATION

    4.1 Auto-rangingHow it works:Whenthepointerreachesapproximately90%ofthefullscalelength,theauto-rangeistriggered,theredauto-range(x10)LEDlightsup.Thepointergoesbacktothebeginningofthescaleandresumesitstravel.Thereadingsshouldbemultipliedby10whenthex10LEDison.

    4.2 Safety Check - Voltage Test Beforemeasuringinsulationresistance,confirmthatthesampleisfullydischarged(particularlyindielectricandcapacitancesamples)andthatthesampleisnotconnectedtoanenergizedcircuit.Toperformthevoltagetest,settherangeselectiontoVMΩ(Model6501) or 500V MΩ (Model 6503), connect and read on the redvoltage scale (600VACmax).DO NOT CRANK. Ifmeasuring onaDCcircuit, thepointerwilldeflectbut themeasurementmaybeinaccurate.

    4.3 Insulation Resistance Testing (MΩ Range)Afterchecking fora livecircuit (seesafetycheck),select the testvoltageandconnectthemegohmmeter.Severalconnectionexam-plesare illustrated further.Crank thehandleuntil theAmberLED(Model6501)orGreenLED(Model6503)ontheupperright-handsidelights,ensuringthattheselectedtestvoltagehasbeenreached.

    4.3.1 Test VoltageNopublishedstandardtellswhichvoltagetochooseforanygivenwinding.However, published recommendations could be summa-rizedasfollows:

    4.3.2 Spot TestingAsageneralruleinspottesting,testvoltageshouldbeapplieduntilnovariationinreadingisnotedfor15secondsorappliedforafixed60seconds.Oncapacitancecircuits,crankingforuptoaminuteormoremaybenecessarytofullychargethesample.Whatminimumvalueshouldbemeasured?TheIEEEstandardN°43-2000statesthatit isimpossibletospecifythevalueofinsulationresistanceatwhichawindingwillfailelectrically,butonmotors,minimumread-ingsgenerallystatedare:

    Rated Voltage R minimum 250 or less 2 MΩ 460 2 MΩ

    There is no fixed figure for determiningwhat is good and bad inresistancereadings,butagoodguidewouldbe1MΩforeveryonehundredappliedoperatingvolts,asaminimumfigure.Thisappliestomotors and transformers.When the insulation resistance getsthislow,anelectricalbreak-downcanbeexpectedatanytimeandrewindingorreplacingshouldbeconsidered.It is not unusual for awinding to be 10 to 100 times the recom-mendedminimumvalue (IEEEstandard43-2000:Recommended Practice for Testing Insulation Resistance of Rotating Machinery),butthisvarieswithtemperatureandhumidity.

    4.3.3 Ratio TestingIn time resistance reading (DielectricAbsorption Ratio), readingsare taken at 30 seconds and 60 seconds to obtain the dielectricabsorptionratio.

    Thistestisusefultoincreasetheaccuracyofspottesting.Ingen-eral,aratioof1.25:2orbettershouldberequired.Aratiobelowthisindicatesthatrepairisprobablyneeded.Remember thataDC insulation testmaybeused foracceptancetesting,butismorecommonlyusedtocheckthegradualdeteriora-tionofequipmentoveritslife.Consultyourequipmentmanufacturerforspecifictestortestvoltageifnotknown.Insulationresistancedecreaseswithmoisture,temperatureandageandshouldberecordedovertimeatagiventemperatureandcor-rected.

    4.4 Successful Insulation Resistance Testing• Checkwiththeequipmentmanufacturerforfactoryinsula-

    tionresistancereadings.• Donotrelyoninsulationresistancetestingaloneasproof

    ofwindingconditions.• Donotexpectthesamevalueforallpartsofallmachines.• Observeconsistenttesttimeduration,recognizingthat

    totalcurrentthroughinsulationundertestwillvarywithtime.

    • Correctallreadingsproperlytoastandardreferencetem-perature(seeIEEEstd#43-2000,Temperature Correction Curve).

    • Knowwhatyouaretesting.Isolatethepieceofequipmentfromothercircuitry.

    • Watchtrendsratherthanrelyingonsingle“spot”readings.

    Guardterminalsareusefulwhenmeasuringhighresistancevaluesandforstabilizingreadings.Whentestingtheinsulationattheendofacable,itisnecessarytoeliminatetheerrorfromsurfaceleakagewhichoccurs,particularlyathighresistancevalues.Thepurposeoftheguardterminal istoprovideathirdterminalwithinthepathofthesurfaceleakage“D”.ConnecttheinstrumentasshowninFigure4-1.Ifthereisnoshieldat“B”,useacopperwirewoundseveraltimesaroundtheexposedsurface“B”.(Note:Ifashield isnotavailableandyoudonotmakeupa shieldaround “B”andconnect to theguardterminal(-),themeasurementwillbeerroneousandleadtoconfusionastothecable’sstate.)

    4.6 Insulation Measurement - Connections

    Figures 4-4 shows the connections to measure the insulation ofone conductor to the other conductors.The cable should be dis-connectedatbothendstoavoidleakagethroughswitchboardsandpanels.For theModel6503, theconnection to theguard terminalisusedtoeliminatetheeffectsofsurfaceleakageacrossexposedinsulationatoneendofthecable.RefertothesectiononUtilizationoftheGuardTerminal(§4.5).

    Figure4-7shows theconnections formeasuring the insulationofa three-phase line togroundby connecting the jumpersbetweenphases.Thisgivesareadingofallconductorsatonce.Ifaloadsuchasamotor,heater,etc.,isattachedtotheotherendoftheline,itwillreadtheloadresistancetogroundatthesametime.Byremovingthejumpers,readingscanbemadebetweentheindividualconduc-torsandground.

    4.7 Insulation Resistance on Motors

    Figure4-8showsreadingtheresistancetogroundofathree-phasemotor winding. Since the three-phase motors are internally con-nected,it isonlynecessarytoconnectoneleadtothemotorleadandtheotherleadtothemotorframeasshown.

    Figure4-9showsthewindingsofathree-phasemotorseparated.Sometimesthiscanbedoneattheleadterminalswhileothertimestheendbellsmustberemovedtogetattheleadwiresofthecoils.By connecting themegohmmeter as shown, thephase insulationresistancevaluecannowbedetermined.Readbetweenphases“A”and“B”,then“B”and“C”,then“C”and“A”.

    MAINTENANCE

    5.1 Warning

    • Formaintenanceuseonlyoriginalfactoryreplacementparts.

    • Toavoidelectricalshock,donotattempttoperformanyservic-ingunlessyouarequalifiedtodoso.

    • Do not perform any service while the Megohmmeter Model6501/6503isonanycircuit.

    • Toavoidelectricalshockand/ordamageto the instrument,donotletwaterorotherforeignagentsintotheelectronicmodule.

    Warning: IfthecrankspeedLEDisnotONduringtesting,thereadingisnotvalid.

    5.2 Cleaning

    Themegohmmetermaybegentlycleanedwithasoftcloth,soapandwater.Dryimmediatelyaftercleaning.Avoidwaterpenetrationintotheelectronicmodule.

    Makesure themegohmmeterandall leadsaredrybefore furtheruse.

    5.3 Fuse Replacement

    WARNING: Foryoursafety,foldthecrankanddisconnectalloftheleadsfromthemeter.

    • Withaflatscrewdriveroracoin,pushandturnthefuseholderaquarterturncounter-clockwise.

    • Replace the fuse with an identical one - 0.2A, 600V HPC6x32mm

    Toensurethatyourinstrumentmeetsfactoryspecifications,werecommendthatitbescheduledbacktoourfactoryServiceCenteratone-yearintervalsforrecalibration,orasrequiredbyotherstandardsorinternalprocedures.

    For instrument repair and calibration:YoumustcontactourServiceCenterforaCustomerServiceAuthorizationNumber(CSA#).Thiswillensurethatwhenyourinstrumentarrives,itwillbetrackedandpro-cessedpromptly.PleasewritetheCSA#ontheoutsideoftheshippingcontainer.Ifthe instrument is returned for calibration,weneed to know if youwant a standardcalibration,oracalibration traceable toN.I.S.T.
