MESSAGE TITLE: PART 6—CHRISTIAN CONDUCT BECOMING OF SOUND DOCTRINE MESSAGE SERIES/OCCASION: PAUL’S EPISTLES: TITUS MESSAGE TEXT: TITUS 2:1-10

(1) But speak thou the things which become sound doctrine: (2) That the aged men be sober, grave, temperate, sound in faith, in charity, in patience. (3) The aged women likewise, that they be in behaviour as becometh holiness, not false accusers, not given to much wine, teachers of good things; (4) That they may teach the young women to be sober, to love their husbands, to love their children, (5) To be discreet, chaste, keepers at home, good, obedient to their own husbands, that the word of God be not blasphemed. Once again from verse one, sound application fits with sound doctrine.

Doctrine without application is useless.

Application without sound doctrine is unbiblical.

1. Aged Men

(2) That the aged men be sober, grave, temperate, sound in faith, in charity, in patience.

2. Aged Women

(3) The aged women likewise, that they be in behaviour as becometh holiness, not false accusers, not given to much wine, teachers of good things; (4) That they may teach the young women...

3. Young Women

(4) That they may teach the young women to be sober, to love their husbands, to love their children, (5) To be discreet, chaste, keepers at home, good, obedient to their own husbands, that the word of God be not blasphemed.

4. Young Men

(6) Young men likewise exhort to be sober minded. (7) In all things shewing thyself a pattern of good works: in doctrine shewing uncorruptness, gravity, sincerity, (8) Sound speech, that cannot be condemned; that he that is of the contrary part may be ashamed, having no evil thing to say of you.

5. Servants

(9) Exhort servants to be obedient unto their own masters, and to please them well in all things; not answering again; (10) Not purloining, but shewing all good fidelity; that they may adorn the doctrine of God our Saviour in all things. Illustration: The Crowing Jewel of my summer at Bluemel’s Landscaping was unfortunately… a disciplinary action. Explanation: Today, we don’t have slaves and servants like there were in Paul’s day, but the principles apply to the employer/employee relationship. In fact, many of the servants of Paul’s day were in fact paid employees. Not every servant was a slave. Employees should:

obey their employers o Romans 13:1 Let every soul be subject unto the

higher powers. For there is no power but of God: the powers that be are ordained of God. (2) Whosoever therefore resisteth the power, resisteth the ordinance of God: and they that resist shall receive to themselves damnation.

please them well in all things o “Oh, so you’re a “company man,” huh? o “Don’t work so fast, young man! We don’t want

to raise the boss’s expectations.” o Illustration: Dad Childers figured out several

ways to improve productivity on his lathe. This resulted in a revenue increase for the company, and a promotion.

o Illustration: The owner of Naturescape Lawn Care was a genius at motivating his employees. I’ve never known a boss so well-liked, nor have I ever seen people work so hard to please him.

o Biblically, we are supposed to please our employer.

Who do you work for? When you please your employer, you

please the Lord!

Not answer again—the idea of “talking back” disrespectfully.

o – (Thayer’s Dictonary) to speak against, gainsay, contradict to oppose one’s self to one, decline to

obey him, declare one’s self against him, refuse to have anything to do with him

o Application: We live in a disrespectful culture. This should never excuse disrespect in a Christian.

o Illustration: 10628 Bobolink incident.

Not Purloining o Thayer Definition:

to set apart, separate, divide to set apart or separate for one’s self to purloin, embezzle, withdraw covertly

and appropriate to one’s own use o Application:

Today’s entitlement mentality Socialism teaches one to believe that

everything must be “fair” in this world. “It’s not fair that my boss has more than me.” Or, “How come I do all the work and he gets all the credit?”

Showing good fidelity—“good faith” o faith

Fidelity (devotion/loyalty/allegiance), faithfulness

the character of one who can be relied on

Adorn the doctrine of God o Does your life “decorate” or “compliment” the

doctrine of God? Argumentation: 1 Peter 2:13-21 (13) Submit yourselves to every ordinance of man for the Lord's sake: whether it be to the king, as supreme; (14) Or unto governors, as unto them that are sent by him for the punishment of evildoers, and for the praise of them that do well. (15) For so is the will of God, that with well doing ye may put to silence the ignorance of foolish men: (16) As free, and not using your liberty for a cloke of maliciousness, but as the servants of God. (17) Honour all men. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honour the king. (18) Servants, be subject to your masters with all fear; not only to the good and gentle, but also to the froward. (19) For this is thankworthy, if a man for conscience toward God endure grief, suffering wrongfully. (20) For what glory is it, if, when ye be buffeted for your faults, ye shall take it patiently? but if, when ye do well, and suffer for it, ye take it patiently, this is acceptable with God. (21) For even hereunto were ye called: because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that ye should follow his steps:

Closing Application:

How is your testimony in the workplace?

Does your testimony “adorn the doctrine of God?”

Will you submit to the people God has put into your life?
