On Thursday, September 14, DAPS will join with more than 2,500 other local nonprofits in the online giving event called North Texas Giving Day (NTGD). Created by Communities Foundation of Texas in 2009, NTGD was one of the first—and now the largest—community-wide giving events in the world. Last year, $37 million was raised on NTGD through more than 142,000 gifts benefiting 2,518 nonprofits. Donations to Dallas Area Parkinsonism Society and bonus funds earned totaled more than $26,000 on that day. This year for the first time, not all giving will occur on one day. We will be able to schedule donations online starting at 8:00 a.m. on Thursday, September 7. Scheduled donations will be processed on Thursday, September 14, and you will receive a receipt at that time. From September 7–14, volunteers will be available at some exercise locations to help people schedule gifts. You can also call the DAPS office at 972-620-7600 for help in scheduling your gift. We will be available in the DAPS office 7am–7pm on North Texas Giving Day (Thursday, September 14)—stop by or give us a call! The only way to donate to DAPS for North Texas Giving Day is to go to bit.ly/DAPS-NTGD2017 or go to NorthTexasGivingDay.org and search for DAPS. Do not donate through the DAPS website; that will not count. Communities Foundation of Texas, sponsor of North Texas Giving Day, awards prize money in part based upon the number of unique donors (repeat donations by an individual do not count). Donations of any amount are appreciated, but a minimum donation of $25 is required to qualify for certain prizes. Thanks to a matching gift fund created by the DAPS Board of Directors & Staff and Cindy Weatherall, up to $2,500 of your donations will be matched dollar for dollar. In 2016, nonprofits who had their own matching funds raised almost 20% more than those who did not have matching funds. Dallas Area Parkinsonism Society Symposium 2017Make plans now to attend DAPS’ first annual “Keep Moving” Symposium. This will be a day of fun that focuses on treatments and strategies for living well with Parkinson’s disease.

This symposium is the fulfillment of a dream for DAPS! We are excited to be able to bring this educational opportunity to families facing the challenges of living with Parkinson’s. DAPS is grateful to our generous sponsors, exhibitors, the Symposium Planning Task Force, and all the volunteers who have helped to make this dream come true.

Together we will “Keep Moving!” We will keep moving as individuals realizing the value of exercise and community. We will keep moving as an organization always looking for the best way to serve families living with Parkinson’s disease. We will keep moving as a community that supports each other and the ongoing efforts to discover a cure.

On Tuesday, October 17, from 11:30 AM to 3:00 PM, DAPS has the opportunity to participate in a Vizient Community Day. Vizient is a healthcare company that works with academic medical centers, community hospitals, and other health care providers. Community Day is a volunteer program where Vizient employees spend a day with non-profit organizations, and DAPS is excited to be one of the hosts this year. As a host, DAPS can provide a learning environment for participants to gain a better understanding of Parkinson’s disease and to spotlight DAPS’ offerings.

This is a wonderful way to increase DAPS awareness in the community. It also draws new sponsors, donors and even new people to volunteer for DAPS. DAPS attendees will team up with Vizient employees to share the day. The event will be at University Park United Methodist Church. There is no charge to attend and lunch will be provided.

For more information, please contact Jo Klein at [email protected]. Register online at daps.us/vizient.

Come out to help us make this a successful event!

On August 1, 2017, the Parkinson’s Foundation announced its launch of a podcast series, “Substantial Matters: Life and Science of Parkinson’s,” available for listeners to stream online or download. Hosted by Dan Keller, Ph.D., a new 15-minute episode airs every other week featuring interviews with Parkinson’s experts.

“As part of the Parkinson’s Foundation’s mission to ensure that all people living with Parkinson’s obtain the care and support they need, the new podcast highlights the latest research and findings while providing practical advice from Parkinson’s experts to help people with Parkinson’s live better lives today,” Keller said.

The podcast, designed for easy, on-the-go listening, provides information for people living with the disease, their caregivers and families, health care professionals, and anyone interested in learning more about the disease. All episodes are archived on www.parkinson.org/podcast.

Upcoming episodes will focus on a range of Parkinson’s topics including: mental health, genetics, driving, marriage, and family relationships. The first five episodes feature the following topics and experts:

• “Early Warning Signs of Parkinson’s,” with Michael S. Okun, M.D., medical director of the Parkinson’s Foundation

Parkinson’s News...

Reprinted with permission from the National Parkinson Foundation’s website, www.parkinson.org.

• “The Parkinson’s Foundation’s Role in Improving Standards of Care,” with Peter Schmidt, Ph.D.

• “The Benefits of Exercise for People with Parkinson’s,” with Bas Bloem, M.D., Ph.D.

• “The Importance of Good Nutrition for People with Parkinson’s,” with Bas Bloem, M.D., Ph.D.

• “How to Manage Parkinson’s ‘Off’ Time,” with Irene Malaty, M.D.

“Recognizing that Parkinson’s is not a one-size-fits-all disease and people can live decades after diagnosis, the Parkinson’s Foundation provides free resources in a variety of formats, including our new podcast series,” Dr. Okun said. “In order to ensure the best quality of life, each patient needs uniquely customized strategies for short- and for the long-term treatment and care, as well as how they learn about their disease and learn to live with it.”

The public may submit suggestions for podcast topics at: www.parkinson.org/feedback. They may subscribe, stream or download podcasts at: iTunes, Google Play, TuneIn (Amazon Echo), RSS feed.

The Love Behind the Labor

I recall reading that if you line up all the cars in the USA bumper to bumper, it must be Labor Day. As I think of DAPS and Labor Day, I cannot help but think of all the labor that goes into making the wheels of DAPS keep turning. I want to celebrate the work that is done by all of our DAPS volunteers and paid staff. I’ve heard more than once that DAPS gets more done with limited resources than any other nonprofit.

Sophocles said, “Without labor nothing prospers.” We often think of material or financial gain when we think of prospering. But prosper also means to flourish physically, grow strong, and be successful. DAPS is prospering. We are growing and we are succeeding in fulfilling our mission. We are achieving our stated mission of impacting and improving the lives of those affected by Parkinson’s disease.

We are successful because, for the DAPS office staff, paid group leaders, and volunteers, their service to DAPS is a labor of love. Every day and at every activity, I see our people going the extra mile. I hope that you will join me in looking for opportunities to say “thank you” to the dedicated and hardworking DAPS team. Say thank you to Jill in the office, the facilitators at each of the DAPS locations, the exercise leaders, the support group leaders, the DAPS Newsletter Team, the Board of Directors, the Advisory Council, our PD Pals, the Programs Committee, and the small army of volunteers that roll up their sleeves and help in the office and behind the scenes in so many ways at each one of our locations and at every activity. Look closely and, if you haven’t already, you will see the love behind the labor.

A message from Mike Miles

Executive Director

DAPS is excited to announce that we have received a grant from the Parkinson Foundation that will allow us to add an exercise class two days a week at the DAPS McKinney location (St. Gabriel the Archangel Church, 110 St Gabriel Way, McKinney, TX 75071), beginning on September 5, 2017. Classes will be led by Emily Schmehl every Tuesday and by Alice Buttner every Friday starting at 10:00 a.m. both days. The DAPS McKinney Parkinson’s Support Group will meet immediately after the exercise class on the third Tuesday of each month. Email [email protected] or call 972-347-5342 for more information.

Funds for this grant were made possible by our involvement in the Moving Day DFW walk held on November 5, 2016, at Globe Life Park. Moving Day DFW 2016 was a great success with over 700 walkers and a wide variety of exhibits. See page 3 of this newsletter for information on Moving Day DFW 2017.
