DUDWA NATIONAL PARK A mosaic of grasslands, marshes, lakes and sal (Shorea robust) forests constitute theDudhwa Tiger Reserve. It is as wild as can be.Situated on the Indo !e"al border in District #akhim"ur $heri of %ttar &radesh, theDudhwa Tiger Reserve with an area of ' s*. km. is one of the finest of the fewremaining e+am"les of the e+ceedingl diverse and "roductive Terai -co s stems. The northern edge of the Reserve lies along the Indo !e"al border and the River Suhelimarks the southern boundar . It is home to a large number of rare and endangereds"ecies, which include tiger, leo"ard, swam" deer, his"id hare, engal flovican, etc. The $ishan"ur Sanctuar located about /0 km. from Dudwa, is the other constituent ofthe Reserve. S"read over about 100 s*. km., it lies on the banks of the River Shardaand is surrounded b sal forests of the ad2oining reserved forests. The grasslands of the Reserve is the habitat of the largest kind of Indian deer theswam" deer or the 3barasingha3, so called because of their magnificent antlers (baratwelve4 singha antler). Decline in their habitats led to a drastic decline in numbers and asmall area named Sonari"ur Sanctuar was set aside in 567 for the conservation of thisrare s"ecies of deer.#ater, it was u"graded to cover an area of 1 1 s*. km. and was renamed the DudwaSanctuar . In 588, the area was further e+tended to include over ' s*. kms. And wasdeclared a !ational &ark. -leven ears later, in 577, when Dudhwa became a "art of&ro2ect Tiger, the area of the $ishan"ur Sanctuar was added to create the Dudwa TigerReserve. About 700 barasingha are to be found in the Reserve and ma2estic herds arees"eciall seen in the grass wetlands of the Stamina and $akmha blocks.Dudwa has also the ideal kind of terrain for the Indian Rhino. 9nce found here in largenumbers, the had been hunted down and had com"letel disa""eared from this area b

    787. :ore latel , it was feared that e"idemics and disease would wi"e out the e+isting"o"ulations of rhino in Assam, ;est engal and !e"al and a decision was taken todistribute some in other suitable areas. In an e+citing e+"eriment, one male and five female rhinos were relocated here from

Assam and !e"al, in 576. !ow well settled in Dudwa, their numbers have increased. At

"resent, tourists are not allowed in the rhino area. The Reserve has also a fair densit of tigers. Standing as it does at the to" of the foodchain, the tiger can onl be "rotected b the total conservation of its natural environmentand the &ro2ect Tiger has reinforced this at Dudwa. Des"ite its numbers, sightings of thetiger are rare, due to the dense nature of the forest cover.Dudwa did have a large herd of ele"hants during the 5'03s and 803s a herd of about/0 animals that migrated here after the destruction of their habitat in !e"al. The havereturned since to a little sanctuar across the border in !e"al. The Reserve, however, does have arranged of fascinating wildlife. Included in their number are sloth bear, ratel, civet, 2ackal, the lesser cats like the leo"ard cat, fishing cat and 2ungle cat4 varieties ofdeer the beautiful s"otted deer or chital, hog deer and barking deer. The his"id hare, a dark brown animal with bristl fur last seen in the area in 56 and

believed to have become e+tinct, was rediscovered in 57 to the great interest ofconservationists. The short nosed crocodile the 3mugger3 and otters can be seen alongthe riverbanks as weII as " thons and monitor li

After Inde"endence it was renamed the Ramganga!ational &ark, and later still the name was again changed to the ?orbett !ational &arkthis last change, it should be noted, was not solel in commemoration of the late Fim?orbett, the famous sla er of man eaters in the sub =imala an forests, but also inrecognition of his services in determining the location and limits of the "ro"osed national"ark before it was set u" he had been consulted over this as an e+"ert. Fim ?orbetthunter of man eating Tigers, "hotogra"her, conservationist and author was born in!ainital of -nglish and Irish "arentage. A childhood s"ent around the ?orbett winterhome of $aladhungi brought oung Fim into close communion with nature, and to aninstinctive understanding of 2ungle wa s.
