Well once again records continued to be broken in our August Table Show with 20 Budgerigars benched on the night. Your support throughout 2017 and into 2018 is phenomenal and it is a credit to you all, every single member of our great club “The Australian Budgerigar Society Inc.”, your support continues to grow so in 2018 let’s continue that momentum every month at our General Club Meetings. Keep up the number of birds in 2018.

Well done everybody, congratulations to the winners. This impressive number of budgerigars being benched at every meeting now allows everybody to talk and discuss their budgies with the judge and talk to their friends about their super budgies, how the breeding year is going and problems they may be encountering. This makes for a great night, great budgies, great friends and new mates. Rule Change: Young Budgies are Blue Ring until the end of December now. Our Table shows are for young budgerigars (Blue and Red Ring) and nestfeather budgerigars (Red Ring). With the New Rule for 2018 Blue Rung Budgies can be Shown as Young Birds until the end of December. This I am sure will help increase numbers at shows and tables shows throughout 2018, especially the second half of 2018.

Blue Rung Budgies can now be shown as Young Birds until the end of 2018 at all Shows. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us so we can help you.

We will always use show staging for all our table shows.

This picture gives us a true representation of the overwhelming support the club has received over the last 54 months, with over 3320 budgerigars benched it speaks volumes for the efforts all club members have put in to make our table shows one of the biggest supported in South East Queensland, well done everybody and don’t forget to bring your birds along to our next table show in July. Blue and Red rung budgies now for Young Budgies and Red rung for Nestfeathers. Table shows make a great stepping stone to club shows and condition your budgerigars to all the aspects of showing. Great effort everybody, this is an incredibly important part of our meeting night and you are all a very special part of our club success.

Alex Johnston doing the stewarding at one of our recent table shows.Great numbers and very good quality budgerigars on display at

our table Shows always . It is a credit to all of our members for their great support.

RINGS, RINGS, RINGS are in stock Uncoded rings are now available for collection from our Ring Steward Shane Beer. If you need rings they are available

for collection at our club General meetings or Shane can arrange to post them to you.

General Meetings in 2018

After our great club enjoyed tremendous success again in 2017 our membership continues to grow in 2018. Results on the show bench for all our members have been exciting filled with a lot of show bench success and through every one of our general club meetings our membership has learnt more about the hobby they love because we continue to provide excellent guest speakers that continue to grow your knowledge about the budgerigar fancy. We will be continuing with our club general meeting mini workshops on a various range of topics in 2018, if would like something discussed pleased contact one of our hard-working committee members and we will arrange it for you.

Café ABS will commence Winter Warmers again from our May general club meeting. In 2018, we have already secured some very prominent budgerigar fanciers, judges and experts in the field of veterinary science and doctors in applied nutrition to continue the good work of 2017 in providing our club membership with presentations and seminars at every club general meetings which are so important for everybody. The second half of the year is full of very highly credible guest speakers that will provide you with an incredible amount of information.

Members please remember that” our club is for everyone” whether you have one pet budgerigar or are a back-yard breeder or are a show exhibition breeder. We all have one common goal to learn more about the hobby we are a part of and our budgerigars. Ask any questions as many times as you would like to. ABS Inc. continues in the path as a progressive club, developing new partnerships and networking with many bird and community groups.

In 2017 it was our Diamond Jubilee Anniversary year was a very special year for our great club. All shows were named in honor of this very Prestigious Anniversary, WOW 60 years can you believe it, how time has flown, in 2018 we commence our 61st Anniversary Year, what a history we have. Today our great club is represented by the cultures and values that have continued to grow and develop our unique club as we look forward to furthering advancement in our Hobby that we all love in 2018 and beyond.

Breaking News You are probably aware that our great club for the last 2 years has been giving back to the community,

something we are very proud to do each year, some charities include Mater Little Miracles and the Eagleby Flood Relief.

At our recent committee meeting it was unanimously agreed to by our committee members to donate to the “Farmers Drought Relief”, so I ‘am very proud to announce that all funds raised at our Club House Show 2018 and other events we are involved in until the end of August will be donated to the Drought Relief. One charity we are looking at is Drought Angels. We are hoping to raise over $1000, ABS will also top up the donation. You

can only imagine how jubilant our committee was about this Fundraiser for our Farmers.

So please come along to our event even if you don’t have budgies for our show and support our decision to raise funds for the drought relief of Australian Farmers, it brings tears to your eyes watching their struggle and

we want to help these wonderful people that provide food for our tables and seed for our birds. Thank You in advance for your support of our idea to help our Farmers. If you can help that would be

wonderful. We look forward to seeing you on the day.

We will also provide further details next week on providing cash deposits for our “Farmers Drought Relief

Fundraiser”. We look forward to releasing our total amount raised for everyone in early September.

We have raised just over $600 so far what an impressive effort ABS, WELL DONE.

WHAT IS TUMMYRITE™

The Science Behind a Unique Supplement Dr. Michael Evans

Avian Nutritionist

Applied Nutrition Pty. Ltd.

OBJECTIVE 3 - Provide some components, such as herbs and yeast functional fibres which have anti-microbial and

binding actions to reduce pathogen numbers and thereby reduce the disease challenge to birds.

The Yeast Functional Fibre (YFF) with prebiotic properties in TummyRite™ have 3 functions:

• Pathogen Agglutination (MOS)

• Immunity Booster (β-Glucans 1-3, 1-6)

• Mycotoxin Binder (β-Glucans 1-3, 1-6)

Mannan-oligosaccharides (MOS) prevent colonisation of the intestinal tract by pathogens such as Salmonella and

pathogenic E. coli. This process is called PATHOGEN AGGLUTINATION. The binding sites on the pathogenic bacteria can

bind to the epithelium of the intestinal tract and enter the bird and create disease. The binding sites on the MOS binds

to the binding sites of the pathogenic bacteria preventing them from attaching to the wall of the intestinal tract.

The carbohydrate structure of the YFF is indigestible by the bird and it passes through the intestinal tract without being

degraded, thus keeping its functional properties unaltered during the whole digestion cycle. The “trapped” pathogenic

bacteria will be excreted together with the YFF. Evaluations on this Yeast Functional Fibre have shown an average of 95%

agglutination for Salmonella sp. and 90% of agglutination of E. coli.

NUTRITIONAL HERBS - HERBS AND HERB EXTRACTS - WHAT ARE THEY?

Herbal remedies of old have become the new science of the future in the quest for natural compounds to assist us to

enhance livestock performance and assist in the control of disease, but without the adverse side effects.

For centuries, plants were virtually the only source of medicines available to humans. Plants were also the basis on

which medicines in the early nineteenth century were developed. Many herbs and spices are well known and are used

every day to flavour our food. However, many are also powerful agents that have been used for hundreds of years to

prevent or cure diseases. Most herbs have a wide range of low molecular weight secondary metabolites.

Generally, these compounds enable the plant to interact with the environment and may act in defence against

physiological and environmental stress as well as pathogens.

Research has shown that many herbs and herb extracts benefit poultry and livestock by:

• Increasing feed intake.

Herbs are active initially in animal feeds as flavours and therefore can influence eating patterns, secretion of digestive

fluids and total feed intake.

• Improve the immune response.

Page 22: 61st Anniversary September Edition 2018 · 61st Anniversary September Edition 2018 ABS COMMITTEE AS OF AGM 2018 Patron: - Mr. Bert Van Manen - Australian Budgerigar Society Inc.MP

Herbs can stimulate the immune system.

• Anti-microbial activities.

Herbs can selectively influence the intestinal microflora by their anti-microbial activity (antibacterial, coccidiostatic (anti-

protozoal), anthelmintic, anti-viral). Herbs and herbal extracts have been shown to have anti-microbial effects on E. coli,

Streptococcus faecalis, Salmonella typhimurium, Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus cereus, Clostridium perfringens, and

Aspergillus flavus. All these organisms cause diseases in livestock.

• Anti-inflammatory properties.

• Antioxidant properties.

Nutrients with different potential for oxidation are ingested in feed. Activity of various antioxidants varies with the type

of antioxidant, polarity, solubility and site of activity. Some antioxidants protect nutrients in the feed, others are primary

active in the digestive tract where they may also aid adsorption of nutrients they protect. Antioxidants are responsible

for many functions in intermediary metabolism including the protection of intact membranes.

• Contribute to nutrient requirements.

Herbs can selectively influence the intestinal microflora by favourably promoting eubiosis of the microflora resulting in

better nutrient utilisation and absorption as well as excluding pathogenic microflora.

• Activity against some Mycotoxins.

TummyRite™ contains a range of nutritional herb feed supplements each of which is composed of a range of individual

herbs combined with sulphur and salts in a special heated-treated process (ISO 9000 Certification) to enhance the

effectiveness of the herbs. The heat treatment renders the products free from pathogens.

In New Zealand, India, Italy, Greece, Taiwan, Mexico and Bulgaria these herbs have been used for over 18 years in the

Poultry and Livestock Industries and for 12 years in Australia. They are time-tested in all seasons and in various

geographical regions.

The mode of action of many of these nutritional herbs are unknown and require further study, but field observations

demonstrate they are effective in helping the well-being of birds and animals.

OBJECTIVE 4 - To assist the birds to develop their own natural immunity against disease challenges.

Immunity Booster – YFF contains β-Glucans 1-3,1-6 contains purify β-glucans that stimulate the endothelial reticulum.

The endothelial reticulum produces high quantities of macrophages that play a key role in the immunological system.

The stimulated macrophages will naturally produce cytokines. The cytokines will trigger a chain reaction inducing to a

higher immune status on birds making them able to fight against opportunistic infections. The macrophage function is to

absorb and destroy the invading particles of phagocytosis.

Page 23: 61st Anniversary September Edition 2018 · 61st Anniversary September Edition 2018 ABS COMMITTEE AS OF AGM 2018 Patron: - Mr. Bert Van Manen - Australian Budgerigar Society Inc.MP

Objective 5 - To enhance the bird’s natural gut microflora by providing the necessary substrates for these favourable

microflora to flourish.

Creating a favourable gut environment is important for health and wellbeing of the birds.

Prebiotic products such as yeast functional fibres (MOS) and xylo-oligosaccharides (XOS) act as nutrient sources for the

favourable micro-flora, and which are not digested by the birds, help to maintain an active gut micro-flora population.

These ensure the proper functioning of the gut and assist in excluding pathogenic bacteria by mutual exclusion (see

later).

They also provide an acidic environment by microbial degradation of prebiotic carbohydrates resulting in the

accumulation of short chain fatty acids (SCFA) (mainly acetate, propionate, butyrate) and which coincides with a

lowering of the gut pH. This is important for excluding pathogenic bacteria and activating some important enzymes in

the gastro-intestinal tract. SCFA may serve as contributing extra energy to the host bird.

According to the latest definition, a prebiotic is a non-viable food component that confers a health benefit on the host

associated with modulation of the microbiota (FAO, 2007). This defines prebiotics as food-grade components that

deliver a measurable benefit to the host through the modulation of the microbiota. A prerequisite for prebiotics is that

they neither be fermented nor absorbed in the upper part of the gastrointestinal tract. Our aim is to encourage the

growth of favourable microbiota already present in the birds rather than flood the bird’s GIT with foreign microbiota.

What are the consequences of developing of developing a favourable population of gut microflora? What is their mode

of action?

There three possible modes of action of developing a favourable gut microflora.

• Competitive exclusion.

• Bacterial antagonism.

Page 24: 61st Anniversary September Edition 2018 · 61st Anniversary September Edition 2018 ABS COMMITTEE AS OF AGM 2018 Patron: - Mr. Bert Van Manen - Australian Budgerigar Society Inc.MP

• Immune modulation (Objective 4)

Competitive Exclusion.

Micro-organisms compete with one another for food sources (mainly carbon and energy). Favourable microorganisms

will compete with pathogen microorganisms for these food sources.

The provision of a food source such as XOS that acts as a food source for the favourable Bifidobacteria, Lactobacillus,

Bacteroides, Pediococcus or Enterococcus and assist in their proliferation. XOS is not readily used by the pathogenic

bacteria as shown from laboratory studies.

As the number of favourable organisms multiplies in the gut they block receptor sites and prevent the attachment of

other bacteria, including pathogenic organisms such as pathogenic E. coli and Salmonella.

Bacterial antagonism

Many favourable bacteria, once established, product substances which are bactericidal or bacteriostatic properties

(bacteriocins) such as lactoferrin, lysozyme, hydrogen peroxide and a number of organic acids.

These substances have a harmful effect on pathogenic bacteria which act by lowering the gut pH.

Competition for nutrients between favourable and pathogenic bacteria.

The stimulation of enzymes, activation of macrophages and anti-tumour activity associated with favourable

microorganisms may contribute to the health status of the host bird.

Immune Modulation

The GIT represents a major immune organ in birds. There is a distinct interaction between the gut microflora and the

immune system. The development of a favourable gut microflora is largely responsible for the development and

activation of the humoral and cellular gut-associated immune system. Microbiota communities can support the bird’s

defence against invading pathogens by stimulating gastrointestinal immune response. As we have already discussed cell

walls from yeasts may promote the activity of macrophages or induce systemic immune response.

Prebiotics and their effect on gut morphology

Several scientific studies in Poultry have shown the positive influence of prebiotics on gut morphology. Supplementation

in broiler diets showed an increase in villus height in the ileum and crypt depth in the jejunum and caecum, (Xu et al,

2003). Xu et al, 2003 suggested that the morphological changes may be attributed to the ability of the prebiotics to

create a beneficial gut environment rather than to a direct effect of prebiotics on the gut tissue.

Summary of the objectives behind TUMMYRITE™? There are five main objectives behind TUMMYRITE™

1. To improve the digestibility and utilisation of the main components of the food of graniverous birds i.e.

seed grains.

2. To provide some key nutrients that are not provided in many of the main feed components fed to birds.

3. Provide some components, such as herbs and yeast functional fibres which have anti-microbial and

binding actions to reduce pathogen numbers and thereby reduce the disease challenge to birds.

4. To assist the birds to develop their own natural immunity against disease challenges.

5. To enhance the bird’s natural gut microflora by providing the necessary substrates for these favourable

microflora to flourish.

OUR FIRST EVER CLUB HOUSE SHOW (LAWN SHOW) Our first Club House Show was an awesome success. Not only did we break our record for birds at 172, we also were able to keep them inside out of the wind and have an awesome Gazebo outside for all of our members and guests. As our Judge said, “it was like you brought the country to the city”, “wonderful day I really enjoyed myself you should be congratulated on this event today”.

Mr Brian Crosbie from Bundaberg came down and was an excellent Judge on the day. I know, from having the privilege of being inside to hear his continual comments on the birds as he judged. Our members were very impressed with Brian as he talked about the birds, giving comments and also information that would help our members. He was also very impressed with our birds especially our Juniors. Brian also commented that he has been at a number of Shows of late and the standard of our birds were as good or even better. That’s a huge complement coming from a Judge.

Bob and Glennis put on a Scrumptious Morning Tea with Cakes and Pikelets. Lunch was a fantastic BBQ with sausages and a huge variety of salads. You have to admit we do like to put on an awesome spread for our members. (Maybe that’s why the kilos stay around) hahahaha

I would like to thank everyone who came and helped on the Day. The Beer Family, Wayne and Gwen Robinson, Bob & Glennis Henderson, Lucas Hendry, Burt Lamb, Ian, Sharon, Lilly and James Michin, Gene & Chrissy Carmichael, Paul, McKenzie and Sam and all the members and guests that stayed afterwards and helped us put everything away in just over an Hour. You Guys are Awsome!!!!!!!

Please enjoy this selection of pictures from the day, maybe you’re in one.

JOKES OF THE MONTH

GREAT ADVICE!

If a dog was the teacher you would learn stuff like: When loved ones come home, always run to greet

them. Never pass up the opportunity to go for a joyride. Allow the experience of fresh air and the wind in

your face to be pure ecstasy. When it's in your best interest, practice obedience. Let others know when they've invaded your territory.

Take naps.

Stretch before rising. Run, romp, and play daily.

Page 39: 61st Anniversary September Edition 2018 · 61st Anniversary September Edition 2018 ABS COMMITTEE AS OF AGM 2018 Patron: - Mr. Bert Van Manen - Australian Budgerigar Society Inc.MP

Thrive on attention and let people touch you.

Avoid biting when a simple growl will do.

On warm days, stop to lie on your back in the grass.

On hot days, drink lots of water and lie under a shady

tree. When you're happy, dance around and wag your

entire body.

No matter how often you're scolded, don't buy into the guilt thing and pout .. Run right back and make

friends.

Page 40: 61st Anniversary September Edition 2018 · 61st Anniversary September Edition 2018 ABS COMMITTEE AS OF AGM 2018 Patron: - Mr. Bert Van Manen - Australian Budgerigar Society Inc.MP

Delight in the simple joy of a long walk. Eat with gusto and enthusiasm. Stop when you

have had enough.

Be loyal. Never pretend to be something you're

not. If what you want lies buried, dig until you find it. When someone is having a bad day, be silent, sit

close by and nuzzle them gently.

I AM THANKFUL FOR TOO MUCH E-MAIL BECAUSE IT MEANS I HAVE FRIENDS WHO ARE THINKING OF ME!

And never trust anyone until you have sniffed their butt.

An Irish Miracle?

Murphy drops some buttered toast on the kitchen floor and it lands butter-side up. He looks

down in astonishment, for he knows that it’s a law of nature of the universe that buttered toast

always lands butter-side down.

He rushes round to the presbytery to see Father Flanagan, tells the priest that a miracle has

occurred in his kitchen but won’t say what it is. Instead, he asks Fr Flanagan to come and see it

with his own eyes.

Murphy leads Fr Flanagan back to his house, into his kitchen and asks him what he sees on the

floor.

“Well,” says the priest, “it’s pretty obvious. Someone has dropped some buttered toast on the

floor and then, for some reason, they flipped it over so the butter is on top.”

“No, Father, I dropped it and it landed like that!” exclaimed Murphy.

“Oh, my Lord!” says Fr Flanagan. “Dropped toast never lands with the butter side up. It’s a

mir….”

He stood, speechless for a moment, before he continued. “Wait… it’s not for me to say it’s a

miracle. I’ll have to report this matter to the Bishop and he’ll have to deal with it. He’ll send

some people round to interview you, take photos and all that.”

A thorough investigation is conducted, not only by the archdiocese but by scientists sent over

from the Curia in Rome. No expense is spared.

There is great excitement in the town as everyone knows that a miracle will bring in much-

needed tourism revenue.

Then, after 8 long weeks and with great fanfare, the Bishop announces the final ruling.

“It is certain that some kind of an extraordinary event took place in Murphy’s kitchen, quite

outside the natural laws of the universe. Yet the Holy See must be very cautious before ruling a

miracle. All other explanations must be ruled out. Unfortunately, in this case, it has been

declared ‘No Miracle’ because they think that Murphy may have buttered the toast on the wrong

side!”

Baby's First Check Up

A woman and a baby were in the doctor's examining room waiting for the doctor to come in for the baby's first exam.

Finally, the doctor arrived, examined the baby, checked his weight, and being a little concerned, asked if the baby was breast-

fed or bottle-fed.

"Breast-fed," she replied.

"Well! We'll have to check you out. Alright then, strip down to your waist," the doctor ordered.

She undressed and the doctor began his exam.

He pinched her nipples, then pressed, kneaded, and rubbed both breasts for a while in a detailed examination. He frowned, then

continued squeezing and pressing for a few more minutes.

Motioning to her to get dressed, he said,

"No wonder this baby is underweight - you don't have any milk!"

"I know," she said. "I'm his Grandma, but I'm certainly glad I came."
