Our president.
Welcome to my first report as President of BSNSW after
being elected in February at the Special General meeting.
Thank you to Steve Cummins for his leadership over the
past 3 years but has relinquished this position & that of
Show Manager due to personal reasons. We should also thank Ann Hand for her hard work
as General Secretary who stood down from this position due to family reasons. I wish both of
you well.
At the Special General Meeting in February we had members nominate for the positions left
vacant and I thank Mark Finnimore General Secretary, James Baker Show Manager & Aaron
Beman Minutes Secretary for accepting these positions.
The Editor of our magazine Anna Shaw also relinquished her position in February and I thank
her for work in this role. At the March Management meeting Justin Magnee was elected to
the position of Editor & I welcome him to the management team. Please support Justin in his
efforts to keep the fancy in touch & up to date with events & articles.
The show season is well & truly underway with large numbers of birds have been exhibited &
congratulations to all successful exhibitors. There have been lovely birds on the bench and
the young birds shown will place us in good stead to have a solid team at the ANBC
Championships in Brisbane in May. If you intend to attend these Championships get your
registrations in. SQBBA has great events planned for the period.
Our next major event is the State Team challenge & State selection on 18th May which
needs your support so get your Branch or Associate Club to enter a team no matter whether
your team will be complete or not as the more birds we can pick the State team from the
better it will be.
The BSNSW Annual Show postponed in January will now be held at the same venue on the
30th June so please support this as much work has been put in to make it successful.
I look forward to meeting & talking to all at various events.
Thank You
Steve Wackwitz

I’ve known Kathy for many years and the few things sticks in my mine, her wonderful nature as a person always greeting you with her beautiful smile and her warm personality and her dedication to the hobby of exhibition budgerigars. Kathy has worked tirelessly in all facets of the hobby be that as a judge, showing on the bench or on a committee for her club (Hills Branch) or for her state (BSNSW) and the (Colours & Standards) .It's a thankless job at times but I’d like to thank her personally having had the pleasure to work along side her while as a steward or the BSNSW committee, one other thing is just like her other love of horses, if she falls off she always gets back on and never gives up know matter how tuff it gets. I will always count Kathy as a friend and I take my hat off to her, Congratulations on a job well done. PS. The same goes to your soulmate Ian outstanding commitment, devotion and work ethic. 3 Cheers and look forward to catching up at the STCC and Nationals in Brisbane.
Question 1. What started your interest in budgerigars?
About 40 years ago a very good friend of mine asked Ian and I to look after her pet budgie whilst she was on holidays. Bluey the budgie was a great talker and very, very tame. I was so taken by him that I wanted a budgie of my own. Ian bought me a Lutino for Christmas, then an aviary followed, then breeding cages, and 40 years later….here we are today.
Question 2. How long have you been in the hobby?
About 40 years, although we’ve only been BSA / BSNSW members for about 35 or so years.
Question 3. What Club & level do you show
Hills Branch, Open
Question 4. What varieties do you keep?
Normals, Cinnamonwings, Opalines, Spangles, Clearwings and a few Yellowfaced Blues.
Question 5. What is your best memory in the hobby?
This is such a hard question to answer! I have sev-eral great memories:
The Society Annual shows held at the old Sydney Showgrounds, the St George shows held at Rose Bay, and in particular Ashley Thompson’s Yel-lowfaced Blues. Having our first bird (a Normal Grey green) go to the Nationals, our first Grand Champion, being made a Life Member in 2009, and I fondly remember the some 16 years I spent on the Colour & Standards Committee, with Bob Bourke, Ron Hunt, Bob Gorman and Jennifer Bell (and in later years John Carter). We were a great team

Question 6. Who's birdroom would you like to spend a day in having a one to one
The Kathy Manton
Story Continued...
I’d reckon that would be Henry George’s birdroom. On the proviso that I could have a good snoop around his
Question 7. Who's bloodlines have influenced your stud?
Ian and I have not brought in many outcrosses over the years, so it’s hard to accredit any particular bloodline. We did breed some nice birds from a couple of Welsh-man birds, but probably not enough to significantly in-fluence our overall stud.
Question 8. Name your 3 top budgerigar breeders in Australia in any or-
3 great names that come to mind: John Scoble, Ray Welsh-man and Mark Chidel.
Question 9. What was your best ever bird and for what reason?
We bred a freak of a bird for its time, a Spangle Double Factor in the 1980s. This was back in the days when there were no classes for Double Factors, they had to be shown as Non Standards. It was unbeaten on the show bench, but sadly being a non-standard, could never come up for a Major Award.
Question 10. What car or motorcycle do you
I drive a manual Mitsubishi Triton diesel dual cab ute. Such a versatile vehicle – great for carrying budgies, horse gear, people, picking up feed, towing a horse float, etc, etc.
Question 11. Name the person you would most like to have dinner with?
Not one person – all my nearest and dearest mates, with lots of grog too!
Question 12. If you could only show at one show, which would it be?
Does the State Team Challenge show count? If not, the BSNSW Annual.
Question 13. What would you do if you won the lottery?
Ah...more land...more horses!
Question 14. Is there anything in budgies that really irritates you?
Being involved in exhibition budgies, means being involved in a volunteer organisation, and an organi-sation that needs people to make things happen. It peeves me off that some people just never volun-teer to do anything at all, and expect others to do all the work. There is no excuse whatsoever for not making some sort of a contribution, no matter how big or small.
Another thing that annoys me is when people show their budgies in really filthy, dirty cages. Seriously? If they don’t give a toss about cleaning their cages, why should I care about judging their bird?
Question 15.
I love our three horses, Digger – an aged stock horse, Danny – an ex-Pacer standardbred, and Kingy who I’ve had for two years now, an awesome-moving Chestnut thoroughbred with 3 white socks. Kingy and I compete in low level dressage and hack shows.
My other hobby is woodworking. I have all the power tools that any girlie could ever wish for, and really enjoy making things like chairs and tables, horse cavalettis, wooden baskets, etc
My wish list for Christmas was a new pair of horse riding boots, and a new Stanley 1 inch wood chisel!
10
Question 16. What is your favourite movie & ac-tor?
Geepers, hard to pick - maybe I’m a bit eclectic…Silence of the Lambs, Black Beauty and any of the James Bond movies. And actors, well Martin Shaw who plays Judge John Deed is pretty easy on the eye!
Question 17. What is your favourite food & restaurant?
The Chinese food at downtown Riverstone RSL is hard to beat.
Question 18. What football team do you fol-low if any?
Next question… I hate footy!
Question 19. Are you in a relationship?
Ian and I have clocked up 36 years of marriage and we lived together for a few years before that.
Question 20. Occupation…?
I am a bookkeeper, specializing in legal accounting.

Procedure to handle the calendar of events and results of shows etc. on the website Received email form webmaster, he is not 100% certain if the emails are spam or genuine as there is a large number of unknown emails. It was suggested that only one person to send information from each club (and a list can be provided to Webmaster). Dan mentioned that it’s not fair that the Secretary is overworked in sending, and that we should delegate to another member to ease this issue. Jean suggested that office bearers should send their own information and external goes through the Secretary Side note – Was bought up that others should have access to the website to make it easier. Needs ap-proval Andre handed information to the webmaster and took some time to update. Small mistakes in the website, need to run in date order in that “what’s on” page Mark has asked people to pass on any errors or correspondence can be sent to him to moni-tor the website and get them corrected. Leg Ring Issue to Associated Clubs Attached is the 3 Correspondences’ regarding the issue Myles- The issue we have is the rights between the Associates and Members, it is very incon-sistent in the way people are treated, we need to bring everyone together. We are giving non-members the same rights as members, and it’s not fair to paying members, An issue at a show that rings were issued to non-members and shown in the show. Not changing any Bylaws yet but will be amended accordingly, and associates have the rights to buy rings as usual but must comply, come back with a proposed change to then send out to associates and spell out exactly why we are doing it. It is currently loaded on the club laptop. A brief overview
Basically, the Lacewing is found in two body colours: yellow (green series) and white (blue series) with red eyes but all markings as in a Normal being cinnamon brown, including the spots. The variety is sex-linked, the same as Opalines, Inos and Cinnamons, and can therefore be developed more easily than a recessive variety.
Starting in Lacewings
Since a hen bird cannot be split for Lacewing, you will need to get a start by obtaining a cock carrying the Lacewing factor either in visual or split form and if possible, two Lacewing hens. I would pair the cock to one of the Lacewing hens, aiming for a progeny of 50% visual Lacewing, 25% Normal split Lacewing cocks, 25% non-Lacewing hens ratio. The visuals would be cocks and hens. And the other original hen? I would pair her to the best normal cock that I have, thereby breeding better youngsters and all the cocks would be split Lacewing. These splits would be mated to visual hens from the first pairing. Within three seasons there would have developed a growing family of Lacewings and splits. The best of the non-Lacewing hens can even be very useful if used with a visual cock. You can see that one does not need to get a lot of Lacewings initially to enjoy the challenge of a new variety. Patience and commonsense will pay off. Should you be offered just one Lacewing cock don't reject it if you have no visuals. I well remember letting a fancier have such a bird although I couldn't supply a visual hen to go with it, and hey presto! - three visual hens in a nest of four when just one would have been a bonus! So don't rule out splits.
Forms of Lacewings The Lacewing can be bred of course in many forms such as Opalines, Spangles and Pieds, however in my experience over many years I prefer normal Lacewings, with only Opalines second. It is the depth of markings which really enhances the beauty of this pastel variety. There are three colours in the yellow variety, or to be more accurate, three shades - light, medium and dark - corresponding to light, dark and olive green. The olive green shade gives the richest colour, nearing mustard. Suffusion in yellows can be very noticeable in the light green shade, so, prudent use only! In the case of white Lacewings the depth of blue is nearly irrelevant, except that the use of blue does cause create suffusion, a factor found in Inos. My experience is that the grey variety used with white Lacewings reduces the suffusion fault and that grey greens when used over two or three generations with yellows tends to dull the body colour. With that knowledge, I would like to only use excellent olives and dark grey normals with Lacewings, but breed-ing or indeed purchasing such coloured normals presents a challenge in itself. Never use Inos, especially cock birds, with Lacewings as the result causes considerable problems when
nests of red eyed youngsters, particularly hens, appear. Use of dilutes reduces the markings on Lacewings, sometimes to the point where such birds can look like Lutino's. Intensity of markings in Lacewings is so important in this variety, as is the absence of suffusion.

Size or Colour Should a fancier wish to go in for this variety, type, colour and size all have to be of paramount concern. The vast majority of Lacewings are of the 'yellow' type, so one must maintain a concerted effort to in-crease size. What must not happen in the quest for size is the sacrifice of colour. As a Lacewing breeder your thoughts have to be three sea-sons ahead if progress on type, colour and size together is to be made. Whenever non-Lacewings are used they should ideally be massive and heavily marked birds, preferably Normals, and paired to the best Lace-wings you have or can get. I am not against breeding Lacewing x Lacewing, providing birds of quality are used, but I find the second generation are better paired to splits or non-Lacewings,basically to improve size.I accept that initially one's enthusiasm demands that many Lacewings be bred, but the numbers game does not usually improve the variety. If you already have a main stud which includes good nor-mals,Lacewings can be run alongside beneficially and will certainly add beauty and interest to any aviary as well as being of help to your club and the budgerigar fancy generally in lifting this beautiful bird from its present "lesser variety" status. Being sex-linked,the breeding expectations in theory are predictable.

CANBERRA BRANCH SHOW REPORT
It was good to see 350 birds entered in our show and we were pleased to see so many exhibitors on the day. It has been many years since I can re-member that sort of number. There were a lot of very good quality birds on display with entries near class. Our Judges, Jean, Andre and Jim had a very busy time and did an excellent job. Tony Butt won Grand Champion, Champion Young went to Ewing Cooke, Champion Intermediate to Luke Dodge and Champion Novice to Steve Thomas. James Matthews was our Auctioneer for the small auction held on the day and it went very well. We would like to thank our vendors for their birds. Our Raffle was also drawn and we would like to thank those that purchased tickets and also those who returned the books to us. As always, I would also like to thank everyone who assisted with the setup, the running of the show, and the cleaning up after the show. It was a very busy show and your efforts were much appreciated. A big thankyou to our major sponsors including the branch members who provided sponsorship, and also to those who made donations to our club. Stuart Foster Chairman BSNSW Canberra Branch
