Introduction

I am 21 years old, third year student of bachelor of Environment major of architecture at university of Melbourne.I’m from Iran and from Middle Eastern background with classical architecture perspective and less modernism. My background was science when I came to architecture and my point of view to the architectural solution usually is from mathematical point of view

Previous Exploration

My first experience of computer modeming in my major was in first semesmetr

of first year in 2013.i enrolled in virtual environment which was a subject with

a new methodoly of approaching a design. . I learnt in thi subject that how

wecan approach a design through natural process and how we can imply this

process in the computer program. It tought different method of approach of

design and compare mode making process with digital modelling process.

thissubject teach me how to use masters aideas in to my model.an dtought

me how I can approach my final design through different methods. This

subject was based on geometrical shape and how we go through a process by

repetition, rotation and movements . by making lantern I understood that how

lighting has different effect on a design and how giv ediffenet meaning sand

A CONCEPTUALISATION

Our world and human being are parallel ,they both are finite.our present life is driven from our past and has effect on our future economically, socially, politically and environmentally. we use our resources for different aspect for our needs.human characteristic is thinking before action its human character thus we need to think before we design and create As Fry states that the sate lf world and state of design should connect together and work together . he introduced two concepts which are opposite to each other in his article : ‹Defuturing› and ‹Futuring ‹ and both are characteristic of todays design. population growth and globalization increase demands for our non-renewable resources. we can see globalization in good aspect as well such increasing networking and trading and improve social, economical situation but it harms environment. according to Fry quote , creation comes with destruction and its one of architectural designer responsibility to form their design according the surrounding environments. the concept of sustainability becomes the major aspects in todays life in economy ,society, design, environment. Fry use this concept as ‹sustain-ability ‹in his article. be forced to be sustainable is good for our future but the other aspect is that sustainability concept is commercialized and become a source to make money for industry people.

5

economical , social and political changes that changed environment and challenge designers for more sustainable designs not just structurally, but economically , socially and environmentally. he make the question that how we can secure our future by design. for design for future we need to control the speed of destruction and notice the concept of sustainability and try to use this concept in right way. according to this concept designers encourages to use renewable resources such as polar energy, wind power hydro power ,etc. we need to minimise our waste and understand efficiency and looking to the nature problems not only at start point of design, through process as well we need to consider it. The space of plausible futures is not about prediction but exploring alternative economic and political futures to ensure an organization will be prepared for and thrive in a number of different futures. The next cone is the possible. The skill here is making links between today’s world and the suggested one. other responsibility is about how people think an change the way of thing of future in terms of using energy and investing for more sustainable designs.

The Bosco Verticale is sustainable vertical forest and residential green building located in the center of one of the most polluted cities in Europe – Milan, Italy. Designed by Stefano Boeri. The building is consider as green building due to carbon Oxide absorbance, and producing oxygen, it blocks dust in to the building. it is efficient design in terms of energy consumption . the water recycle system circulate through whole of building and garden. This building act as a natural recourse like jungle for its surrounding environment. The gardens block the noise from surrounding environment. This design prevent noise and air pollution in to the building.

The Change Initiative “Buildings are a prime example of how human systems integrate with natural systems. The Change Initiative efficiently uses our natural resources to make an immediate, positive impact on our planet, which will tremendously benefit future generations to come.” Rick Fedrizzi President, CEO and Founding Chair, U.S. TCI is located in Dubai, and is one of the most sustainable commercial building in the world.teh most material used to build the building are recyclable. it›s designed with solar Panels and heat reflective material. the insulation of building IS three times stronger than ordinary office building . the building logo reminding the sustainable environment as well . TCI by selling suitable products in building itself circulate the idea of sustainability through society and economy and spread the outcomes through industry.

A.2 Design Computation

“For the first time perhaps, architectural design might be aligned with neither formalism nor rationalism but with intelligent form and traceable creativity.” Terzidis, Kostas (2006). Algorithmic Architecture

Before studding on computation concept I always thought that computation and computerisation are the same concepts. ‹computerization is entity or process that are already conceptualised in the designer mind are entered, manipulated or sorted on a computer system›(Terzidis, Kostas )

its follows traditional design method and it is using computer algorithms for drafting purposed.while computation is a design approach through mathematical and algorithmic thinking which is facilitated by calculation and needs the level of design thinking base don parameters and algorithms.( article) computational thing is the the process of defining problems and formulate them to use them in the process of design and enable designer to challenge in design process to find the solution and fabrication stage. New digital design is conceptual form fro. Morphogenetic concept which generates new form and interact with material process as well.prametric designs I digital design. in the other sense through computation design ,designer has indirect relationship with design which is increase the ability to control and process the design in various ways and gives more possibilities for designer to find or other sense to create the solution . computation thinking create new model for design according to geometrical base. parametric design is one of the computation design thinking tool which is capable to create geometrical elements with various scales and its regarding to developing geometric ideas through design process. enable architectural designers to think and act through the process in different and more powerful way compare to traditional design. 7

The National Stadium, located in Beijing is public space is example of parametric design .the stadium is similar to vessel form .its from geometrical elements and form the circular shape as product of geometrical elements. the structural elements are integrated with façade design. from this example we can see how geometrical shape in parametrical design combined structural form.

Son-O-House Located in a a large industrial park in Son en Breugel, the Netherland It is a public pavilion .the structure is architectural and also sound producer by interacting people in to the structure and people become part of the structure to composite sound and participating in music production.this structure follows the body movement and reflect it through geometrical elements in to the structure.

A.3 Composition/Generation

When architects have a sufficient understanding of algorithmic concepts, when we no longer need to discuss the digital as something different, then computation can become a true method of design for architecture. Peters, Brady.

Parametric modelling is one of the computational design thinking which is defined by algorithms and parameters. architectural designers use scripting and programming as design tools for computation designs. Burry states that the scripting is source of different design parctice.he mentioned that control and productivity are two outcomes of scripting in design. but there is discussion that designers in computation process are ciders or designers. scripting enable designers to create new form of architecture and instead of traditional architecture that computer program design the process now designer can design the program to facilitate the process and gives more control and productivity. its enables industry to choose different and work on different system and enable designer to integrate in to the process more effectively by having more connection with constructors and engineers and bring architects in to the industrial firm as well. the computation thinking is process by algorithmic and scripting and allow designer to communicate with codes and ideas through deign process. algorithmic thinking allows designer to communicate with engineers and technological tools and increase the understanding of design process and outcome. it s not about what we build its about how we are going to build and how the process works.

second tallest building in the world is example of parametric design which is used algorithmic process .twisting and curved form is the architectural style and also act as structural function in the design.this form is modelled in grasshopper by rotating the geometry to decrease the wind force on the building façade. this rotation can be done in parametric modelling but is not formed easily by using traditional architectural method.

According to Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences parametric design is functional not just for architectural aspect but for constructional aspect as well. designers used software called Ecotect Analysis which is model different aspect of building such as thermal performance, daylighting ,etc.it can analyse different materials used in building.

Conclusion

Architectural designers are not just responsible for aesthetic aspect of the design but to consider the design functions socially, economically and environmentally. computation redefining the design method and design process.computation design tools interact architecture from the first stage of design which is defining the problem to design process and fabrication. algorithmic thinking and scripting give architectures authority and more power through the design process and enable them to imply their ideas in to the reality and solving more complex problems.the parametric design functions in different aspect and even parametric building performed more sustainable than traditional designs. it connect architectural style with building system aspects such as energy efficiency ,acoustic ,etc.

Before I start the Air studio my vision of computation design was limited to drafting , editing and design basic.I realized that computation design is a tool to solve problems and take designers in to the process and fabrication stage and enable them to work in more complex situations. by using grasshopper I realized that how we can change our design more faster and how our design adapt the overall physical shape even by changing a little element of our design.before I disagreed with computation and technology tools but I realized how computation program tools in design can help to have more sustainable outcomes.

that how fast we can change

the overall physical model

by using Grasshopper.by

changing one part the whole

structure is changed.

This model is created by different curves and lofting process and finalized by mesh process.ilearnt that how meshing divides surface in to different geometrical elements(triangular shapes) and by smooth mesh how I can change the smoothness of the surface

I chose my f ield research in patterning as I bel ieved that everything fol low a rule and pattern. The pattern need to be recognised by users. Different people observe a design in different way, they may recognise different pattern depends on their experience and effects. Pattern is observable regulari ty in nature and manmade product. We can recognise pattern in our surrounding environment by tast ing such as we can real ize the pattern of sweetness or sourness in food, by l istening we can l isten to the music with certain pattern and rhythm such as Beethoven music, we can feel the pattern by touching an object, and the most visible and sensible pattern is visual pattern. The natural pattern are fol lowing symmetry and rotat ion. The Water Cube by Chris BosseThe design used the patterning f ield to create the structure by using the geometry and material i t forms bubbles which are symbolizing of the water from the nature in to the city structure. The Designer used Voronoi diagram to create the façade. The mathematics , art and molecular science are associated to create and atmosphere for view to experience the nature in to the closed space.

Al ibaba Headquarters I t is located in Hangzhou. This design is created by using Voronoi diagram to divide the skin of the bui lding in order to direct the l ight to play with shading system. It creates new form of design which gives new structure and atmosphere to surrounding environment and viewer.

The purpose of this module is to learn the script ing form of grass-hopper in different category, i t shows how designers use grass-hopper and science of script ing for their design. In this module I created different patterns by dif-ferent geometry and create differ-ent forms by different methods. The pattern is created by differ-ent size and different direct ion of a certain geometry and implied them in 3d form by using differ-

ent surfaces in different axes. At f irst I generated grid to make the whole skin and created patterns and form by applying different shapes with different sizes and density in the plane which are gave me different depth and skins.

B.3. Case Study 2.0:

31

Reverse-engineer the project

Design by design studio loop pH, is lighting pavilion in Michigan. The Vor-noi structure is made by circles woven in different size and orientation .it is assembled in the site and is portable structure. The design technique is based on the molecular bonds between carbon atoms.it is energetic struc-tural system and responding to the surrounding environment by produc-ing energy by changing each circular shape. Audience can understand the change in geometry by observing the light produced by using energy of this change. In this design I notice that how designer imply the overall pat-tern and geometry in the each meshes in detail and by looking at the de-tails and each element we can see the whole structure as well.as the Vor-onoi pattern is repeated in to the each branch and by changing the Vornoi cell size it produce energy.

32

33

In the reverse engineering part, we asked to make a script based on the project that are designed .This module is focused on how we can find the technique from other project to create the existing form and imply the technique in the new design. In this part I learnt interesting techniques and components such as kangaroo, weaver bird compo-nent and also Exoskeleton that thickens the mesh lines in different direction. It introduced me that how I can shorten my way to get the result by using new techniques. The challenging part for me was how to create the smaller frame in to the whole frame, how can I imply the pattern in each branches and each single meshes. For this part I learnt weaverbird and for thickening my mesh I used Exoskel-eton that manage knots sizes in my design. For creating the whole structure I realised that we use the sphere as a base with Voronoi Box and based on them we create the skin and main structure and at the end we destroy the based part which was sphere. I learn that I can use this technique in my design with different geometrical solid form to create the outer structure.

The purpose of this module is to think about our design in term of ma-terialisation and fabrication process. In this part I started thinking of my design in terms of model making process and how different param-eters and elements are assembled together, what is the force between them and how it effects the whole form and surrounding environmentI starts with small geometry shape such as circle and polygon. My fo-cus was how different elements interacts with each other and how the effects on each other. I tried different possibilities to attach different parts of model. According to case Study 2 I learnt that we can design our structure by creating the basic form and based on it creates the main structure and the skin of the design and at the end hide the base element that we started with. This basic element can be different ele-ments such as triangular shape, circular or rectangular shapes and it creates different patterns and effects on the whole form and structure.

MERRI CREEK

«lovely stream of water»

B.6. Technique: Proposal

41

The Merri Creek flows from the Great Dividing Range and pass through Melbourne’s northern suburbs and intersect with the Yarra River. The intersection of Yarra River and Merri creek is my chosen site for my design. The reason that I chose this part was, when I was walking through the site I realised when I face to south direction my view is just nature, no existence of road and cars, no machinery world, just flora and fauna. While when I turn back to the north the highway was in front of me with lots of cars. The inter-esting point was I could hear the car noises after I faced to north but before that I couldn’t hear. I think it was because my visual sense interacted with my hearing sense and cre-ated the new natural atmosphere for me.

42

43

In my Proposal design, the focus is on the contrast between south view and north view, and the relationship between 3point that I chose on the intersection of Yarra River and Merri Creek. The design is pro-posed to create a form which interacts with water to create the pattern in to the water by changing the water flows and movement. The water pattern is created by these three points which are directing the water by the form and structure that they create. The design form respond to the site by interacting with the key ele-ments of the site such as river. The form creates relationship between nature and urban form and involve viewer through their interaction that it is reflected by the design.

44

In part B I learnt the practical as-pect of scripting and how I can imply this knowledge to create new form and also how I can transfer a design into the scripting form. I learnt new design technique to create my basic form and develop it through the scripting process by different parameters through us-ing different components and tech-niques. In research field I realised that how architecture is interacted by mathematics and nature and how architects transfer science and mathematics in to the design to create a form which is more logi-cal to the human mind and more pleasant for visual aspects. In Case study 1.0 I explored dif-ferent technique to process the patterning style I tried to create pattern with different elements in different directions and controlling the density of pattern and form by changing the geometry orientation and sizes.

In Case Stusy2.0 I learnt that how I can transfer an existing design in to the scripting form which makes me to understand the whole structure and from better .It takes me through dif-ferent challenges that guide me to my proposal design within the cho-sen site. In model making process I felt the computation process in real world and explored that how materialisa-tion and fabrication process effect on the design form and also the sur-rounding environment. I realised that how different elements of the form interacted with each other and how they effect on each other in different ways. I imply the techniques that I learnt in to my design in order to responding to the site in more efficient way by involving elements of the site in to my design.

B.7. Learning Objectives and Outcomes

45

Through different tasks I learnt different techniques and different processes that I can reach a design and create a new form. It teaches me the details of design and how the idea and concept reflects from each single part of form. By grasshopper I controlled the shapes and sizes and different forms that I created .

The chosen site includes three locations where are shown in the picture. At these points we can feel the contrast between nature and urbanism and how urabanism has negative effect on nature. The Breif is to connect these three locations with each other to increase social awarness of their space and environment and how the urban area is in contrast wth natural envrinoment and how it has negative effect on nature.

2: The east side of the site, facing to the north side we see the city veiw and urbanism and its effect on teh environment ,as we turne our head toward south we see teh nature and slience of the nature atmosphere , feeling teh con-tradiction at the same time.

3: the south side of the site ,natural area where is in contrast with point 1 and 2. Its seprated from urban area and teher is no con-nection to point 1 and 2.

As it mentioned in Part C.1. the concept of the proposed design is to increase people awarness of their surrounding environment and urbanism effects on the nature by reflecting teh contrast between urban area and natural area at the same time. As my purpose is to connect 3 Assumed locations mentioned in Part C.1. with each other I design a bridge between these three areas .In order to respond to the site in an efficient way , I get inspired by the natural shape of the existing site and tried to consider it in to my design. The overall shape of the bridge is taken from the intersection of Merrie Creek and Yarra River.

. By walking through the bridge people feel the contrast between nature and urbanism and city life. When the polluted water over flows to the Merrie creek from drainages in northe west side, normally peopel dont feel the concequences . They will be aware of the negative effect of pollution imposed by urbanism in to the water when they are walking through the bridge which connect urban area (1,2)to the nature(3).Because their way is locked by the force of polluted water to the bridge surface.
