MOBILE HYDRAULICSBY DAWN M. GESKE
SUPPORTING A LEGACYProduction continues on the Webster product line; B, YB and YC series of hydraulic gear pumps and motors
In the industrial marketplace, there continues to be a demandfor service of older product lines.
While demand for such products maybe far less than in their heyday, theircontinued availability is essential forequipment owners to maintain andsupport their existing machinery.
Quality Control Corp. is a manufac-turer dedicated to providing this “lega-cy service” to customers that continueto have a need for older and in somecases, out-of-production components.
“With products like the Websterhydraulic gear pumps and motors weprovide this service of continuity ofsupply for an older product line to aninstalled base of customers,” saidGregory M. Willard, president of QCC.“We serve an existing base of cus-tomers that use Webster products ontheir equipment, providing them theservice and support for a legacy prod-uct that they continue to depend on.”
“Webster is a well-recognized namein the fluid power industry,” added JoeTrytek, marketing and business devel-opment executive for QCC. “Some ofthe old product offering that was dis-continued as part of that lineage weresurrected and are fulfilling cus-tomers’ needs today. Not 100%, but agood portion.”
And, Trytek noted, “we’ve done anice job of getting that message out tothe distributors, OEMs and also someof the end user customers as theproducts are once again availableand will be for the foreseeable future.”
The history of the Webster hy-draulic line dates back more than 50years, and today is made up of the B,YB and YC series pumps and motorsthat target a range of mobile equip-ment in the ag, construction, industri-al, turf and lawn care, and militarymarkets, as well as on-highway busand motorhomes.
QCC began producing the line inJanuary 2004 and supplies Webstercomponents through distribution,OEMs, packagers, rebuilders, cataloghouses, equipment dealers and facto-ry direct to end users. “We are tryingto support an end user customer’sneed for emergency repairs,” saidTrytek. “Service is the key as thesecustomers are going to go to the com-pany that takes care of them thequickest. That’s what we’ve found tobe important, especially through thedistribution side.”
Products in the Webster B seriesinclude fixed clearance, three-piecepump and motor designs with flowsfrom 1 to 6 gpm in nine displace-ments ranging from 0.06 to 0.59cu.in./rev. The stackable pumps andmotors have a cast-iron constructionand have a universal mountingflange. The units weigh between 3and 6 lb. and typical applications

include aerial lifts, fan drives, transfer and lube pumps, and lawn and turf machines.
The Webster YB series is a newer design of gear pumpsand motors with a two-piece aluminum alloy constructionthat incorporates powdered metal gears and heat-treatedsteel shafts. The pumps and motors are targeted towardlawn and turf equipment, fan drive systems and small, off-highway machinery. Flow range on the YB series is 1 to 6gpm with five displacements from 0.15 to 0.58 cu.in./rev.Operating pressures range to 2500 psi, depending on model.
At the top end of the Webster family is the YC series, aline of pumps and motors dedicated to fan drives, concretecutting saws, small power units, engine-driven pumps andpower steering systems. Also constructed of aluminum with

heat-treated alloy steel gears and shafts, the YC pumps andmotors have six basic displacements ranging from 0.58 to1.94 cu.in./rev. Flow is 1 to 25 gpm.
QCC assembles the Webster family at one of its four pro-duction facilities at its Harwood Heights, Ill., headquarters. The four facilities span 120,000 sq.ft. with dedicated preci-sion machining and functional testing capability for all com-ponents and assemblies.
“We’re much different than a traditional machine shop,”said Willard. “We have all the pieces. Our capabilitiesinclude project and supply-base management with systemsand staff for production and inventory management alongwith a group of manufacturing process engineers, soWebster is core to what we do. The competencies are thereas well as the systems and structures to support our pro-gram. We look at it as a primary business opportunity. Itgets the attention of the resources that it needs to prosperand be successful.”
From this location, QCC has inventory to support morethan 400 final assemblies and 1200 product models in theWebster line, which it said supports overnight deliveries.“Someone can call today and we can build a pump or motorand ship it same day,” said Trytek.
While admittedly part of QCC’s core business, the Websterseries is not the only activity for the company. QCC is a man-ufacturing services supplier that also produces high preci-sion machine components and assembles and tests prod-ucts for aerospace, diesel fuel systems, the fluid power indus-try and air tools. Through its Qualiseal Technology division italso produces a full range of face seals, labyrinth seals andmating rings. dp
