Muhsin Khan: All praises and thanks be to Allah, Who (Alone) created theheavens and the earth, and originated the darkness and the light,

yet those who disbelieve hold others as equal with their Lord.Sahih International: [All praise is [due to Allah , who created the heavens and the

earth and !ade the darkness and the light. "hen those whodisbelieve equate [others with their Lord.Tafsir Jalalayn: #raise, which !eans to describe in beauti$ul ter!s, be, [ever established,to %od: is this !eant to be in$or!ative, so that one believes in it& 'r, is it!eant as a eulogy, or both& "hese are three possibilities, the !ost likely o$which is the last, as the haykh [ al*l al+ -n al+ ahall- states in [hisco!!entary on s/rat al+0ah$ [1. 23:2 4 Who created the heavens and theearth 5 6e singles out these two $or !ention because $or the observer theyconstitute the !ost aweso!e [visible creation4 and 6e appointed, 6ecreated, darknesses and light, that is, every darkness (7ul!a) and everylight: the use o$ the plural only in the case o$ the $or!er is because it

which you earn.Tafsir Jalalayn: 6e is %od, the 'ne worthy o$ being worshipped, in the heavens and in theearth. 6e knows your secrets and your utterance, what you keep secret andwhat you utter openly a!ong yourselves, and 6e knows what you earn, what

: 6ave they not seen how !any generations We destroyed be$orethe! which We had established upon the earth as We have notestablished you& And We sent [rain $ro! the sky upon the! inshowers and !ade rivers ow beneath the!4 then We destroyedthe! $or their sins and brought $orth a$ter the! a generation o$others.Tafsir Jalalayn: 6ave they not seen, in their travels to yria and to other places, how !any,(ka! is predicative [and not interrogative , !eaning B!any?) a generation,[how !any a co!!unity o$ past co!!unities, We destroyed be$ore the!4We established the!, We assigned the! an [established place, in the earth,

through strength and abundance, as We have not established, [as We have[not assigned, you (there is a shi$t in the address here $ro! third person [tosecond )4 and how We unleashed the heaven, the rain, upon the! intorrents, one torrent a$ter another, and !ade the rivers to ow beneaththe!&, beneath their dwellings. "hen We destroyed the! because o$ theirsins, because o$ their denial o$ the prophets4 and We raised up a$ter the!another generation.Indonesian: Apakah !ereka tidak !e!perhatikan berapa banyak generasi

: And even i$ We had sent down to you, [' uha!!ad , a writtenscripture on a page and they touched it with their hands, thedisbelievers would say, C"his is not but obvious !agic.CTafsir Jalalayn: And had We revealed to you a cripture, inscribed, on parch!ent, as they

requested, and had they then touched it with their hands 5 this is !orepower$ul than saying, Bhad they seen it with their eyes?, since it [touch is!ore eEective in eli!inating doubt4 the disbelievers would have said, indisobedience and obduracy: B"his is nothing but !ani$est sorcery?.Indonesian: an kalau 0a!i turunkan kepada!u tulisan di atas kertas, lalu!ereka dapat !enyentuhnya dengan tangan !ereka sendiri,tentulah orang+orang ka;r itu berkata: C=ni tidak lain hanyalah sihir

Muhsin Khan: And they say: CWhy has not an angel been sent down to hi!&C 6adWe sent down an angel, the !atter would have been 9udged atonce, and no respite would be granted to the!.Sahih International: And they say, CWhy was there not sent down to hi! an angel&C Futi$ We had sent down an angel, the !atter would have been decided4then they would not be reprieved.Tafsir Jalalayn: And they say, BWhy has an angel not been sent down to hi!&?, touha!!ad (s), to con;r! his truth$ulness4 yet had We sent down an angel,as they have requested and i$ they then did not believe, the !atter, that theybe destroyed, would have been decreed, and then they would not be givenany respite, they would [not be given any e8tra ti!e $or repentance or ane8cuse, as is %od?s custo! [in dealing with those be$ore the!, destroyingthe! when they disbelieve a$ter their request is granted.Indonesian: an !ereka berkata: C engapa tidak diturunkan kepadanya( uha!!ad) !alaikat&C dan kalau 0a!i turunkan (kepadanya)!alaikat, tentulah selesai urusan itu, ke!udian !ereka tidak diberitangguh (sedikitpun).

Muhsin Khan: And had We appointed hi! an angel, We indeed would have !adehi! a !an, and We would have certainly caused the! con$usion ina !atter which they have already covered with con$usion (i.e. theessage o$ #rophet uha!!ad AW).

Sahih International: And i$ We had !ade hi! an angel, We would have !ade hi![appear as a !an, and We would have covered the! with that inwhich they cover the!selves.Tafsir Jalalayn: And had We appointed hi!, the one who is sent down to the!, an angel, Wewould assuredly have !ade hi!, the angel, a !an, that is, [We would havesent hi! in the $or! o$ a !an, so that they would be able to see hi!, sinceno hu!an being is capable o$ seeing an angel4 and, had We sent hi! downand !ade hi! a !an, We would have assuredly con$used, obscured, $or the!what they are con$using, $or the!selves, when they say, B"his is but a !ere!ortal like the rest o$ you?.Indonesian: an kalau 0a!i 9adikan rasul itu !alaikat, tentulah 0a!i 9adikandia seorang laki+laki dan (kalau 0a!i 9adikan ia seorang laki+laki),tentulah 0a!i !eragu+ragukan atas !ereka apa yang !ereka ragu+ragukan atas diri !ereka sendiri.

Muhsin Khan: And indeed (!any) essengers were !ocked be$ore you, buttheir scoEers were surrounded by the very thing that they used to!ock at.Sahih International: And already were !essengers ridiculed be$ore you, but those who!ocked the! were enveloped by that which they used to ridicule.Tafsir Jalalayn: And !essengers were indeed !ocked be$ore you 5 this is !eant as aconsolation $or the #rophet, (s) 5 but those who scoEed at the! wereenco!passed by that which they !ocked, na!ely, [by the punish!ent [sentdown on the! : those who !ock you will be enco!passed likewise.Indonesian: an sungguh telah diperolok+olokkan beberapa rasul sebelu!ka!u, !aka turunlah kepada orang+orang yang !ence!oohkan diantara !ereka balasan (a7ab) olok+olokan !ereka.

"hose who destroythe!selves will not believe [in Allah as being the only =lah (%od),and uha!!ad AW as being one o$ 6is essengers, and in<esurrection, etc. .Sahih International: ay, C"o who! belongs whatever is in the heavens and earth&Cay, C"o Allah .C 6e has decreed upon 6i!sel$ !ercy. 6e will surelyasse!ble you $or the ay o$ <esurrection, about which there is nodoubt. "hose who will lose the!selves [that ay do not believe.Tafsir Jalalayn: ay: B"o who! belongs what is in the heavens and in the earth&? ay: B"o%od, $or even i$ they do not say this, there is no other response. 6e hasprescribed, 6e has decreed, $or 6i!sel$ !ercy, as a bounty $ro! 6i! 5 thisis a gentle su!!oning o$ the! to the $aith. 6e will surely gather youtogether on the ay o$ <esurrection o$ which there is no doubt, no











uncertainty, in order to requite you $or your deeds. "hose who have $or$eitedtheir own souls (this is the sub9ect) 5 by e8posing the! to the chastise!ent5 they do not believe (this is the predicate).Indonesian: 0atakanlah: C0epunyaan siapakah apa yang ada di langit dan di

bu!iC. 0atakanlah: C0epunyaan AllahC. ia telah !enetapkan atasiri+>ya kasih sayang. ia sungguh akan !enghi!pun ka!u padahari kia!at yang tidak ada keraguan padanya. 'rang+orang yang!eragukan dirinya !ereka itu tidak beri!an.

: ay, C=s it other than Allah = should take as a protector, Greator o$the heavens and the earth, while it is 6e who $eeds and is not $ed&Cay, [' uha!!ad , C=ndeed, = have been co!!anded to be the;rst [a!ong you who sub!it [to Allah and [was co!!anded , I onot ever be o$ the polytheists.I CTafsir Jalalayn: ay, to the!: B hall = take as a protector, to worship, other than %od, the'riginator o$ the heavens and the earth, the 'ne Who has created the!without any precedent, 6e Who $eeds, Who gives sustenance, and is not$ed&?, and is not given sustenance. ay: B= have been co!!anded to be the;rst to sub!it, to %od, $ro! a!ong this co!!unity, and, it was said to !e:J o not be a!ong those who associate othersK ?, with 6i!.Indonesian: 0atakanlah: CApakah akan aku 9adikan pelindung selain dari Allah

yang !en9adikan langit dan bu!i, padahal ia !e!beri !akan dantidak !e!beri !akan&C 0atakanlah: C esungguhnya aku diperintah

And i$ 6e touches you with good + then 6e is overall things co!petent.Tafsir Jalalayn: And i$ %od touches you with an aMiction, a trial, such as an illness ori!poverish!ent, then none can re!ove it, [none can li$t it, e8cept 6i!4 andi$ 6e touches you with good, such as health and aMuence, then 6e haspower over all things, including 6is touching you with this, and none otherthan 6i! has the power to re!ove it $ro! you.Indonesian: an 9ika Allah !eni!pakan sesuatu ke!udharatan kepada!u,!aka tidak ada yang !enghilangkannya !elainkan ia sendiri.an 9ika ia !endatangkan kebaikan kepada!u, !aka ia aha0uasa atas tiap+tiap sesuatu. *+1

you4 this 1uran has been revealed to !e that = !ay therewith warn you and who!soever it !ay reach. Gan you verily bear witness thatbesides Allah there are other aliha (gods)&C ay C= bear no (such)witnessDC ay: CFut in truth 6e (Allah) is the only one =lah (%od).

And truly = a! innocent o$ what you 9oin in worship with 6i!.CSahih International: ay, CWhat thing is greatest in testi!ony&C ay, C Allah is witnessbetween !e and you. And this 1urIan was revealed to !e that =!ay warn you thereby and who!ever it reaches. o you [trulytesti$y that with Allah there are other deities&C ay, C= will nottesti$y [with you .C ay, C=ndeed, 6e is but one %od, and indeed, =

a! $ree o$ what you associate [with 6i! .CTafsir Jalalayn: When they said to the #rophet (s), BFring us so!eone to testi$y to the trutho$ your prophethood, $or the #eople o$ the cripture have denied you?, the$ollowing was revealed: ay, to the!: BWhat thing is greatest in testi!ony&?(shah*datan: this is $or speci;cation, and is derived $ro! the [i!pliedsub9ect o$ the sentence). ay: B%od 5 even i$ they do not say this, there is noother response 5 6e, is Witness between !e and you, to !y truth$ulness4and this 1ur?*n has been revealed to !e that = !ay warn you, [that = !ay







!ake you $ear, ' people o$ ecca, thereby, and who!ever it !ay reach (wa+!an balagha: this is a supple!ent to the [suEi8ed pronoun [Byou? o$undhira+ku!, B= !ay warn you?), that is to say, who!ever a!ong !en and

9inn the 1ur?*n !ay reach. o you indeed bear witness that there are othergods with %od&? (this interrogative is !eant as a disavowal). ay, to the!: B=do not bear witness?, to this. ay: B6e is only 'ne %od, and = a! innocent o$what you associate?, with 6i! o$ idols.Indonesian: 0atakanlah: C iapakah yang lebih kuat persaksiannya&C0atakanlah: CAllahC. ia !en9adi saksi antara aku dan ka!u. an

Al 1uran ini diwahyukan kepadaku supaya dengan dia aku!e!beri peringatan kepada!u dan kepada orang+orang yangsa!pai Al+1uran (kepadanya). Apakah sesungguhnya ka!u!engakui bahwa ada tuhan+tuhan lain di sa!ping Allah&C0atakanlah: CAku tidak !engakuiC. 0atakanlah: C esungguhnya iaadalah "uhan ang aha sa dan sesungguhnya aku berlepas diri

Muhsin Khan: And who does !ore wrong than he who invents a lie against Allahor re9ects 6is Ayat (proo$s, evidences, verses, lessons, revelations,etc.)& Herily, the Nali!un (polytheists and wrong+doers, etc.) shallnever be success$ul.Sahih International: And who is !ore un9ust than one who invents about Allah a lie ordenies 6is verses& =ndeed, the wrongdoers will not succeed.Tafsir Jalalayn: And who, that is, none, does greater evil than he who invents a lie against%od, by ascribing to 6i! an associate, or denies 6is signs&, the 1ur?*n4 it is

verily the case that, they the evildoers shall not prosper, on account o$ this.Indonesian: an siapakah yang lebih aniaya daripada orang yang !e!buat+buat suatu kedustaan terhadap Allah, atau !endustakan ayat+ayat+>ya& esungguhnya orang+orang yang aniaya itu tidak !endapatkeberuntungan.

along the ground, as in the case o$ water!elons, and untrellised, risingupwards on a ste!, such as pal!+trees4 and, 6e produces, pal!+trees, andcrops diverse in avour, [diverse in the shape and savour o$ its $ruit andseed, and olives, and po!egranates, alike, in [ter!s o$ their lea$(!utash*bihan, Balike?, is a circu!stantial quali;er) and unlike, in [ter!s o$their savour. at o$ the $ruit thereo$ when it ripens, be$ore its !aturity[passes , and pay the due thereo$, the al!s as appropriate, on the day o$ itsharvest (read yaw!a has*dahu or yaw!a has*dihi), that is, one tenth or hal$ o$ it, and do not be prodigal, by giving it all away, so that nothing re!ains$or [the consu!ption o$ your dependants.
