    DearParents/Guardians:

    Earliertoday,theCurriculumCommitteeoftheBoardconcludeditsfinalmeetingoftheschoolyear.Atthe

    meeting,theCommitteecontinueditsdiscussionoftheadministration's proposaltomoveelementary

    schedulestoasixdaycyclebeginninginSeptember.Afteragreatdealofthoughtfuldialogueandafter

    expressingappreciationtotheindividualsinvolvedindevelopingtheproposal,theCommittee

    recommendedaperiodofadditionalstudyanddeliberation.

    Specifically,theCommitteerequestedthattheadministrationfacilitateabroadercommittee,including

    parents

    and

    teachers,

    to

    review

    the

    elementary

    schedule.

    In

    September,

    the

    administration

    will

    develop

    a

    formalproposalforthisprocessinconsultationwithourCurriculum,InstructionandProfessional

    DevelopmentCouncil.WehopetobeginworkonformingthebroadercommitteeinNovemberwithagoal

    ofmakingarecommendationtotheCurriculumCommitteeinFebruary.

    Wearereviewingtheelementaryscheduleaspartofanefforttoaddressfundamentalissuesimpactingour

    instructionalprogram.Amoreeffectiveschedulecanhelpprovidegreatercontinuityintheschoolday,

    limitinterruptionsforclassroomteachers,andenablebetterdeliveryofcoresubjectareas.Thegoalisto

    enhancetheeducationalexperienceinourschoolsandimproveachievementforallstudents.

    Fortheupcomingschoolyear,allelementaryschoolswillcontinuewithafivedaycycle.SpecialsandFLES

    will

    continue

    under

    our

    current

    model.

    The

    administration

    will

    work

    to

    move

    the

    start

    time

    of

    the

    elementarydayto9:00AM.Theadministrationwillprovideguidancetolimitthetimespenteachdayin

    morningmeeting.Eachschoolprincipalwillworktocreatededicatedblocksoftimeforstudentstoreceive

    enrichmentandsupportservicesthatdonotinterferewithcoreinstructionaltime,consistentwiththe

    goalsofthe"WIN"(WhatINeed)timemodel.

    Iwanttoclosebythankingeveryonewhohascontributedtotheconversationabouthowwecanbest

    supportourelementarychildrenthroughourinstructionalprogram.Theconversationhasattimesbeen

    difficultbecauseweallcaredeeplyabouttheseissuesandwanttheverybestforthechildren.Iappreciate

    thetimethattheBoardhasgiventothisissuebyschedulingadditionalmeetingssothatallvoicescouldbe

    heard.

    Fornowourfocusturnstoconcludingthisschoolyearsuccessfullyandpreparingourschoolsforagreat

    startinSeptember.Wewillalsospendtimereviewingtheinputthatwehavereceivedtodateandwewill

    provideanupdateinthefallregardingthismatter.
