Greeting speech of the

President of the

European University Sports Association

Mr. Alberto Gualtieri

Dear athletes, officials and guests,

I am honoured to welcome you to the V European Universities Karate Championship.

On behalf of EUSA, I would like to thank the Organising Committee for what has been done for the

organisation of this important event. I am glad to state once again that our Championships have

aroused large interest in the European University Movement. This success of our events, in terms of

participation and overall organisation is due to the devotion of the Organising Committees and local

Authorities which has been giving their valuable time to coordinate the running of this

Championship.

To all the persons involved in this event, I wish all the best.

EUSA activities are only possible due to the immense level of support and encouragement we

constantly receive from our National University Sport Associations, from the huge work carried out

by our Secretariat and our staff. I am sure that our new IT system has strongly simplified the

enrolment procedures both for the participating teams and Organising Committees.

Last, but surely not least, I would like to acknowledge all the athletes taking part in our events. I

hope you will enjoy this Championship and that you will compete for the best placing bringing with

you the Olympics spirit.

I hope you will always take with you this spirit which I consider fundamental for the wellness of the

University Sport.

Welcome to EUC Karate 2011!

SARAJEVO Sarajevo is the capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina and its

biggest urban, cultural, economical and traffic centre, the

capital of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina and it

has about 429,672 inhabitants. The Miljacka river flows

through the town and there is the source of the Bosnia

river nearby which is a very popular picnic ground for the

people of Sarajevo. Olympic Mountains Jahorina,

Bjelašnica, Igman, Treskavica and Trebević surround the

town. During winter a lot of people from Sarajevo and

tourists from all over the world visit these mountains.

City The biggest university in the country is Sarajevo

University and there are other higher education institutions

which make Sarajevo one of the biggest university centers

in the area of Southeastern Europe.

Many sacral objects, mosques from the

Ottoman period, orthodox, catholic and evangelist

churches, synagogue and other historical

monuments make urban picture of the town.

Sarajevo is relatively small town comparing to the

world's biggest cities, but its name is more famous

than the names of some of the big cities. In 1914 as

the spark of World War I. Seventy years later, in

1984 Sarajevo was the host of the 14th Olympic

Winter Games.

Sarajevo is situated almost in the very

centre of the country with the area of 142 square

kilometers. Central parts of the town are placed in

the Sarajevo Valley spreading in the east-west

direction and ends in the Sarajevo field.

The oldest parts of the town (Vratnik, Bistrik, Hrid, Kovači, Alifakovac) are placed on the slopes of the hills.

With a few national and city theatres, museums and cultural institutions, Sarajevo has its important

place on a cultural map of this part of Europe. Every year Sarajevo is the host of many international festivals

such as Sarajevo Film Festival, Sarajevo jazz festival, summer festival „Baščaršijske noći“, theatre festival

MESS, Sarajevo winter and the World's TV festival of oriental music.

The centre of Sarajevo is on 511 meters above

the sea level. Ilidţa settlement is at the lowest point in

the town at 498 meters above the sea level and higher

parts of the town such as Grdonj and Hum in the

north, Borja in the east and Trebević in the south are at

about 900 meters above the sea level. The town is

surrounded by wooded hills of the Olympic mountains

of unique beauty which are about 2000 meters high:

Bjelašnica (2067 m), Jahorina (1916 m), Igman,

Treskavica and Trebević (about 1629 m). The most

popular sports are football, basketball, volleyball,

chess and karate. Two sports associations’ Ţeljezničar

and Bosna represent the centre of sports life. Both of

them have a lot of different sport sections. The town

was the host of the Olympic Winter Games in 1984.

In Sarajevo there are two important football

clubs Ţeljezničar and Sarajevo, volleyball clubs

Ţeljezničar and Bosna, basketball club Bosna which

was the European champion in 1979, tennis club

Ţeljezničar, University Karate Club Bosna, Karate

Club Ilidţa and Karate Club Bushido.

In the last period, representatives of the BiH

Universities in Karate won European’s and World’s

University medals.

BOSNIA AND HERZEGOVINA – Short History

Most Bosnian historians think the Bosnia has been an

independent state since the ninth century. At the beginning the rulers

of Bosnia were bans. The first known ban was Ban Borić and then

more famous Ban Kulin. After the coronation of Ban Tvrtko I

Kotromanić in 1377. the rulers of Bosnia became kings. Bosnia kept

its independence until the Turks came in 1463 when it becomes part of

the Otoman Empire.

Although a small country, Bosnia and Herzegovina has a very

rich culture that influenced the neighboring countries of the Balkans

(music, literature, film, art and applied art, design and modern media).

Bosnia and Herzegovina, along with Hungary, is the only country in

the area with more than one Nobel Prize winners: Vladimir Prelog

(chemistry) and Ivo Andrić (literature). Sarajevo was the host of the 14

Olympic Winter Games which were the games of peace and

friendship.

Music in Bosnia and Herzegovina has long and famous

history. Traditional Bosnian music is a mixture of different influences.

The most famous is SEVDALINKA, a very specific love song with a

very long tradition and its characteristics are poetic and romantic song

lyrics with a bit of melancholy which is not surprising because the

word „sevdah“ in Arabic language means „love“.

Bosnia has a lot of important and famous

writers. The most important writer in our country and

the Nobel Prize winner for literature is Ivo Andrić. He

won the Nobel Prize in 1961 for his novel „Na Drini

ćuprija“. During the Ottoman period many writers from

Bosnia were well-known in the oriental world and in

Bosnia there was a new branch of literature called

Alhamiado literature.

It is important to mention the three religions

present in Bosnia which have a great influence on

cultural development of the country. Sarajevo is the

only town, along with Jerusalem, which has Orthodox

Church, mosque, Catholic Church and a synagogue in

the area of 100 square meters. The most important exhibit of the Zemaljski museum in Sarajevo is the

Sarajevo Haggadah, a traditional Jewish prayer book which was brought here in the 16 century by the

Sephards who were expelled from Spain. Oriental heritage of Bosnia and Herzegovina can be seen in many

examples of oriental, sacral and secular architecture.
