WISDOM

We consider wisdom today. The first reading from the book of Wisdom presents this precious gift as a feminine spirit, a very desirable virtue sought by many and graciously present to all who seek her. In today's Gospel, Jesus tells a parable to illustrate wisdom in a practical, measurable way. The wise will conserve their resources, use them prudently, and mark the passing of time. The foolish, on the other hand, not planning ahead, will be in the dark. Both of these readings tell us how accessible wisdom is to all who simply and honestly seek it. Paul's words to the Thessalonians are not about wisdom, but describe one result of true wisdom: To the wise person of faith even death holds no terror. Blessing of Unborn Children The church welcomes with joy and compassion the mothers who, recognizing that all life is a gift from God, come to the Church seeking a blessing for their unborn child. Such a blessing sustains the parents by imparting grace and comfort in times of concern and need, unites the parish in prayer for the unborn child, and fosters respect for human life within society. The Rite will usually be conducted on the second weekend of each month: Next blessing will be on Dec. 9/10.

House Blessings Parishioners may request a house blessing by contacting the parish office, 702-459-7778. You will be contacted by Deacon John or Deacon Dan.

32nd Sunday in Ordinary Time - November 12, 2017

As I have mentioned before, we are adding something to our parish calendar: a Thanksgiving Eve Potluck Pie Social. Our Mass on Thanksgiving Eve is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. in the Gorman cafeteria — our regular Mass location. As soon as Mass is over, ALL are invited to

go to the “back” cafeteria and join in the social! You are asked to bring one (or more!) of your favorite pies — homemade OR from a bakery. It will be easiest to bring the pies early, that is, before Mass and bring them to the “back” cafeteria on tables that will be so designated. Of course, I anticipate a variety of pies: naturally lots of pumpkin, maybe my favorite — mince meat (hint, hint) and any other kinds: cherry, pecan, etc. That’s all YOU have to do: just bring a pie to share. WE — meaning our staff — will be hosting the event. It’s one small way of us saying a big THANK YOU to all of you for all that you do for us — your support, your generosity, your time and your being part of Holy Spirit. So, we will provide everything else: drinks (coffee, hot cider, water, lemonade), paper ware (napkins, plates), plastic ware (forks, knives, spoons, serving utensils) and decorations! Most of all we will be the servers — dishing out the pie slices. We are looking forward to this and hope that it is a wonderful time to share with each other not only the beginning of the this wonderful time of the year —Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s, but also this milestone of our history: making plans to move into our new church building. A few people have asked if there will be any “tours” of the project while it is under construction. Most likely NOT. This is so for several reasons: 1) it’s a “hard-hat” mandatory site and it is just impractical for hundreds to be walking through the building — still under construction — and risk the possibility of injury; and 2) I really want you to see it for the first time on Monday, May 14, for the Dedication Mass OR on Pentecost weekend (May 19/20) for our first weekend of liturgies. I am hoping that there will be this kind of “wow!” moment when you walk into the completed and furnished beautiful church! Of course, there will be some persons who will be working in the church ahead of the Dedication Mass . . . e. g., those involved in liturgical ministries so that we can “practice” where and how to do the different parts of Mass: reading from the Ambo, distributing Communion, baptizing children, etc. This is all so exciting! Keep checking into our website (www.holyspiritlv.org) for photo, video and written updates. God bless!

CATHOLICISM: The Pivotal Players

Nov 14/16 – Facilitated by Deacon John MICHELANGELO -- The Artist: The master of sculpture and painting is not a saint but serves as the privileged representative of the creative potential engendered by the Catholic Faith. The Church professes that beauty is a route of access to God, and through humanity’s creative artistry we glimpse the power and glory of the Lord.

CATHOLICISM: The Pivotal Players is a multi-part film series that illumines a handful of saints, artists, mystics, and scholars who not only shaped the life of the Church but changed the course of civilization. Each Class will be offered twice per week on Tuesday evenings from 6:30 – 8:00 pm and on Thursday mornings after daily Mass from 8:15 – 9:45 am in the Gathering Place.

Nov. 21 (Tuesday only) —ST. FRANCIS - -The Reformer: Rebuild my church! That’s the mission Christ gave to St. Francis and it’s the perennial task of the Church in every age of its life. But how is the reform and renewal of the Church to be accomplished? The life of St. Francis demonstrates that Christ intends the foundations of true and lasting reform to be built on the solid rock that is the radical witness of the saints. (The Thursday session was presented on Oct. 5th.)

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, In the United States, more than 46 million people are living in poverty. The Catholic Campaign for Human Development (CCHD) assists those living in the margins by giving them the tools through their anti-poverty program to find hope and a way to a more secure life. CCHD’s philosophy emphasizes empowerment and participation by assisting the poor in participating in the decisions and actions that affect their lives and communities, they “help people help themselves” to move beyond poverty. Your support of this collection can change the lives of people living in poverty across the United States. The Catholic Campaign for Human Development is made possible by the generous support of Catholics in the United States, mainly through this annual collection. CCHD grants are awarded to local anti-poverty efforts in the community in close partnership with the local Catholic diocese and require the explicit approval of the bishop. When considering your donation to CCHD, please keep in mind that grant funding for anti-poverty efforts has come back to our diocese and our local community in the form of grant money. The Church’s social teaching is a rich treasure of wisdom about building a just society and living lives of holiness amidst the challenges of today’s modern society. Thank you for joining in this worthy cause to empower people with the skills to end the cycle poverty. Assuring you of my continued prayers, I remain Sincerely yours in Christ, Most Reverend Joseph A. Pepe, D.D., J.C.D. Bishop of Las Vegas

Next weekend, at all the Masses, there will be four Christmas trees filled with Angels representing six agencies/programs in our community. The following is a list of the agencies, their Angel color and their mission:

GREEN - Casa de Luz is a community resource center located in the Las Vegas neighborhood known as the Naked City. They have asked for individual toys and gift cards for children.

PINK The ROSE Foundation provides supportive services for families in the community by providing emergency food assistance, back to school and holiday support, tutorials and many other programs to help them reach self-sufficiency. They have asked for toys for the children. There are also little red stockings for donations or cash or check (payable to Holy Spirit). These donations will enable the Foundation to assist the families with emergencies that arise as they strive to reach their full potential.

YELLOW - Children’s Heart Foundation, founded in 2001, is making a difference in the lives of heart families right here in Nevada through emotional, educational and financial support. They have asked for toys for boys and girls, and gift cards to help their families. The little red stockings are for donations of cash or checks (payable to Holy Spirit). These donations will enable the Foundation to assist with much needed medications, medical supplies, etc.

BLUE - Family Promise’s mission is to offer homeless families the opportunity to achieve housing stability by providing short term shelter, meals, case management and hospitality. They are asking for toys for boys and girls and gift cards for their teenagers.

ORANGE - Catholic Charities of Southern Nevada offers a wide range of programs for those in need from infants to seniors, regardless of race, religion or creed. They are asking for toys for boys and girls and gift cards for their teenagers.

ORANGE - Catholic Charities Resident Empowerment Program offers a structured environment for homeless men who want to gain self-sufficiency through employment. They are asking for much needed new underwear and socks. Their greatest need is for sizes medium and large.

WHITE - Catholic Worker is grounded in works of mercy for people in need in our community. They have asked for stockings containing stocking stuffers and gift cards for their children as the families do not have many options for transportation to pick up gifts. Stockings will be provided.

Please consider taking an Angel next weekend and making a difference for someone this Christmas. We do ask that all gifts be NEW as most of these families rarely receive anything new.

Relationships I have no favorite moment during the Mission Trip.

But if I had to pick a favorite moment, it would be the whole week in Jamaica, especially the times we spent at Sophie’s Place. There is no doubt I enjoyed a great deal hanging out with the residents at Mary’s Child, Jerusalem, and Jacob’s Ladder, but it is Sophie’s Place where I met the happiest children in the most difficult predicaments. It is where I met the most heartwarming people I ever met. It is where we had our happy moments and sad moments every night during our reflection.

One of the children who stayed at Sophie’s Place and found a way into my heart was Courtney. Courtney is paralyzed and blind. He never smiled. He would cry a lot and sometimes refused to eat when I fed him. It broke me when he would start crying and I didn't know what was bothering or hurting him. On the last night we stayed at Sophie’s Place, I tucked him to bed for the last time. I sang to him. But something happened that made me cry. I swear as he was about to close his eyes, I saw a little smile on his face. And right then and there, I realized that we made a difference in those children’s lives. And what surprised me the most is even in those difficult situations, those children were able to find joy. I never want that moment to end. Angelique Vollmer 2017 Missionary
