President's

Report 2013

Congratulations to everyone at Emu Park Surf Club on another rewarding and successful season. We all should feel very proud of the many achieve-ments of our members most notable of these is the number awards gained this season. In excess of 100 awards were gained in Irb drivers and crew-man, First aid, Advanced Resuscitation Techniques, Bronze medallion, Surf Rescue certificates, Radio operators, Marine stingers, ATV inductions, Silver Medallion Beach Management Certifi-cates, Training Officers and Assessors in most Disiplines, Level one and Two coaches.

Very well done by All.

Patrols were done to a very high stand-ard, the implementation of an internal Patrol auditing system has been re-ceived well by all the members. The standard of patrols has lifted. This was displayed when a rescue occurred after the Sunday Afternoon Patrol had fin-ished. The members present complet-ed a very dramatic rescue with a mini-mum of fuss, this being possible by the training and the confidence shown.

More notable events would be our Over 200 years Master’s Boat Crew making the Finals at the National titles and Hayden Bowles making the Quar-terfinals of the 17 Single Ski Race. Paul Safigna making 4th place in the Masters Flags and Sprint. Emu Park had a very successful State titles with every

competitor exceeding their expecta-tions.

This would not be possible without the efforts, dedication and the time given by all the coaches, their work generally goes unnoticed .

Also I must thank our Training officer , John Phelan for the effort put in or-ganizing the training and assessing of the many awards conducted. Also we need to also thank the all the trainers and assessors for their efforts as well.

The committee members have a great work ethic as without them the club would not be as strong as it is.

Patrols was good again this year, but it was not easy with patrol members fighting floodwaters to make their pa-trols. Many thanks to all those mem-bers who made the extra effort to cover those who were not able to do their patrols.

We have a strong membership base but we must continually monitor it continuously to make sure the patrol-ling strength is good.

Fundraising is a very necessary part of club, unfortunately this season we were not actively fundraising as good as we have in previous seasons, this needs to be addressed for the ensuing season.

Our Surf Girl, Mel Weber proudly repre-sented Emu Park at the Miss Surf Girl Quest . Mel entered the quest as a shy, quiet girl and not liking public speaking . On her return came a young lady full of confidence and not afraid of the micro-phone. A great experience for Mel.

In summary there is no doubt that we have had a very successful season this year, a good platform has been laid to build on. There are a few areas in the club we are working on strengthening such as Ski paddling , Boat rowing new members and the under 17- 19’s.

The junior section once again showed

Many other competitors showed good results throughout the season with many showing great improvement from the previous year. This displays the strength and depth of the coaches and age managers we have looking after the Juniors.

The new season gives the club a real chance to show it strength by going one better than last season.

Many thanks to all involved I have thor-oughly enjoyed the season.

TRAINING OFFICERS

REPORT

Chief Training Officer Report –

John Phelan

It’s difficult to imagine a role in Surf Lifesav-

ing that could give a person more satisfaction

than to be your Club’s Chief Training Officer.

You get to know every active lifesaver and

have a real influence on the skills, knowledge

and attitudes of our young lifesavers. This

season the team conducted 148 proficiency

tests for the senior lifesavers and 237

preliminary/competition evaluations for the

juniors. On top of there were 148 new

awards gained by Emu Park members and

most of these were trained and assessed by

our club members.

Please allow me to acknowledge the

tremendous work that our team of trainers

and assessors do. The team is Janet Spark,

Nev Bowles, Geoff Clark, Rob Manning, Gary

Witt, Tash Wilkinson and of course, yours

truly. These guys are all experts in the vari-

ous skills of surf lifesaving and willingly

spend their weekends and some nights dur-

ing the week, sharing their knowledge with

our next generation of lifesavers. I also want

to thank Kirsty Glitheroe from Yeppoon SLSC,

who came over and helped with assessment

on a number of occasions, I am truly grateful.

Awards gained

We had a number of visitors and new

members from other clubs do their

proficiency test at Emu Park this year

and I was proud of the feedback that

we run the most rigorous annual profi-

ciency testing that they had experi-

enced. I was also proud of the largest

group of young men and women that

we have ever trained for the Bronze

Medallion to come out of our nippers.

An incredible 18 people, who only two

years ago were in the nippers, are now

fully-fledged Australian Surf Lifesavers.

This is a real credit to them, their parents and

to their nipper Age Managers, namely Jon

Auriac and Meredith Rutherford. Some of

these young people have already advanced

their lifesaving skills by doing other courses

such as Advanced Resuscitation Techniques and

IRB Crew.

Any member who feels that they would like to

be part of the team of trainers and assessors

can please contact me – we are always grateful

of new team members. The Training Calendar

for 2013/14 is already published and I encour-

age all members to take advantage of the

courses being offered and advance your lifesav-

ing and personal skills.

BOAT CAPTAINS

REPORT

Season 2012/2013 as far as surf boats are concerned was the most successful season in over a decade for the club.

The season started out with 5 crews on the water, 2 x Masters, 2 x Open Womens and 1 x U23 Mens, through natural attrition caused by outside pressures of family and work these numbers reduced over the course of the season, however we finished with 3 crews on the water consistently training at the end of the season.

The first carnival of the season saw us head to Agnes Water for the Branch Premiership series in early October. For surfboats this is billed as more of a training camp type carni-val, we had 3 crews compete this day, being the 2 x Masters crews and the U23 Men all of whom were very competitive against the likes of Tannum Sands and Bundaberg.

In late October we made our annual pilgrim-age to Mackay for the North Australian Championships at which we had 3 crews competing, 2 x Masters and 1 x Open Wom-en. These crews were very competitive with the Masters taking home the Silver and Bronze and the girls claiming the Bronze.

After the New Year our crews started to head south for various carnivals on the Gold and Sunshine Coasts. Firstly in January was the final round of the Navy Series at Tugun where both Masters crews, The Bradburys and The Brahmans competed and held their own in what was a very testing day with a 1m swell and 30 knot northerlies.

In early March the 2 x Masters crews attended the first round of QLD Cup at Bribie Island. The carnival on this day was called off after just 1 round of racing due to adverse weather conditions. However, this trip was not a total waste as our crews had travelled from Mooloolaba with the Mooloolaba crews on their bus and the afternoon and night on the trip back to Mooloolaba, some may argue was the highlight of the season with the infamous Mooloolaba boat shed party that followed.

Page 10: 56th Annual 0 Report 2012/2013 - Emu Park Surf Lifesaving … · Training Officer Advanced Resuscitation Techniques 2 ... of new team members. The Training alendar ... a composite

P

The next carnival Emu Park boat crews were represented at was the State Cham-pionships at Maroochydore in late March. The Bradburys Over 200’s competed at this carnival in challenging conditions with a 2m swell bringing home the Silver for their age group.

On the first Saturday of April we ventured to Mooloolaba for the final round of the QLD Cup. In the week before this carnival there had been a tropical low off the Sun-shine Coast which was sending some huge swells into the bay, which had some crews cracking waves from the turning cans 400m out to sea and riding them all the way to the beach. At this carnival we were represented by the 2 x Masters crews and a composite crew of Open Women. My level of respect for these girls, Adrienne Wall, Kimmy Friedrichs, Bonny Allen and Melissa Weber, grew astronomically after this day, in their 4 races they got 3 fourths and a fifth against some surfboat heavy-weights such as Mooloolaba, Alex Head-lands and the likes, so to say I was proud of their efforts and determination on the day is a massive understatement.

The pinnacle of the season occurred in mid April when we had our first boat crew in at least 15 years compete at the Aussies at North Kirra. As it turned out The Brad-burys Over 200’s were up against it with a 2m heavy swell breaking on the back bank that saw some crews in other divisions not even be able to make the start line due to equipment and rower damage in their warm up.

.The crew of John Phelan, Mark Wyer, Steve Rye, Robin Manning and swept by yours truly went about it the hard way, firstly coming third in our heat, only 2 go through to next round, which meant we had to row in the repecharge, getting second in this meant we went to the semi final which at the Australian Champion-ships is a tough task in itself. In the semi we needed to get at least third to progress into the final and this we achieved with the crew rowing all the way to the beach to pip another crew right on the line. Down to the final 6 crews and rowing in an Australian Final is an absolutely outstanding effort by the crew, to make the fi-nal, most crews will never experience. Under the watchful eye and the pre final pep talk of our President, Nev Bowles, in the final the crew came sixth after being smashed on the back bank on the way home, nevertheless the crews that won thoroughly deserved the win and the outcome of the final has inspired the Bradburys to again take on the challenge in season 2013/2014.

I would like to sincerely thank everyone that was even remotely involved in any part of this season, it was the people involved that made the season so successful and enjoyable. I want to thank our sponsors, Westco, Pirtek, Criterion Hotel, David Mills Lawyers, Emulec, without your generous support none of this would be possible.

I want to personally thank the following people, Rob Manning for the mountain of work he has done to maintain our trailers and boats, tow the boat to every carnival, putting the oar racks up and always with a smile. Jon Wall for taking on sweeping and coaching a masters crew, your sweeping ability and confidence has come along great-ly and will continue to improve the more you do it, this was on display on THAT wave at Mooloolaba. Great Work.

Mark Wyer for using 3kg of black grease on each oar to lubricate the buttons, Thank You, I think. The row-ers I would also like to thank for such an enjoyable season, without the row-ers it doesn’t happen so Thank You.

Last of all I want to thank the wives, girlfriends, boyfriends, families for al-lowing your partners and loved ones to be a part of this very special sport.

Looking forward to an even better season in 2013/2014.

Yours in Surfboats

Emu Park Hosted Junior States in 2010 with a peak in membership of 229. Prior to this we had been ac-tively growing the Club through communications at a personal lev-el & promoting the good news sto-ries in the media exposure.

The momentum peaked at Junior States & the volunteer effort to host this event has taken it's toll in people pre-pared to step up & take on a leadership role. This combine with the increased level of Governance & Awards Training process & paper work it is becoming increasingly difficult to provide the volunteer support structures the organisation is demanding.

The Floods & extreme Weather of 12/13 Season saw reduced numbers at Sunday Nippers simply due to the inclement condi-tions. I believe this has also had an impact on membership & participation this sea-son.

Surf Sports:

North Aussies Wrap Up

We had small but highly competitive team of kids make the trip north to Mackay. A fantastic weekend of competition & cama-raderie saw the Emu Park kids do us proud.

Matilda Phelan was outstanding in the un-der 13 age group and Jacob Spark was equally outstanding in the under 12’s age up.

There was a number of children that stepped up to a age above to fill team events and they not only assisted the teams but grained valu-able experience in the events.

It was great to see the support and encour-agement that all the parents gave these chil-dren and they will be better much better competitors in the future from this experi-ence.

We all witnessed an incredible swim leg from Matilda Phelan in the under 13 age group Cameron. She entered the water at least 30 metres behind the lead swimmer and by the end of the cans was only just five metres be-hind. She then swam for 10 to 15 metres be-side the lead swimmer before kicking away for a fantastic win.

Page 14: 56th Annual 0 Report 2012/2013 - Emu Park Surf Lifesaving … · Training Officer Advanced Resuscitation Techniques 2 ... of new team members. The Training alendar ... a composite

Jacob Spark won the age champion for the under 12 following on from his age championship in the under 11 last year. He just wants to compete whether it is swim, board or beach. A great competitor.

Al the other competitors’ results were very good. All gave 100% and we were all very proud of their efforts. The competi-tion is the second best after States so to compete well here is always a challenge.

It should always be remembered that we are only at the start of our year and the northern teams are all at the end of their season and at peak fitness and perfor-mance levels.

Mason Hebbard was rewarded with mak-ing the Country team. Mason competes at a very high level in both beach and wa-ter events and gives his all. He is now one of the senior nippers in the club and as such proves to be a good role model for the junior nippers in the club.

WBC Junior Branch

Brach was moved from Tannun Sands to Emu Park this year due to lack of accom-modation available in and around Glad-stone due to the high level of develop-ment.

We provided a strong but smaller team for the weekend and the results and fun that was had by all made for a great carni-val. Again there was some outstanding performances but also some great im-provement in some for the juniors in just competing the event.

The conditions were not the best with very high tides and limited beach to work with at times. The competition was very strong particularly from Tannum and Bundaberg. We more than held out own and from there we had a small team go to the States at Hervey Bay.

Teamwork: As the saying goes there is no “I” in team, our kids would not have achieved what they did without the com-mitment, dedication, support & encour-agement of our

Officials: A massive day on Sat with-out you we don’t have a carnival.

Age Managers & assistants: You guys are truly the backbone of the Junior Club. Thanks for staying calm & organising the kids in such a dynamic environment.

Water Safety: “well done, you kept our kids safe” & put in some long hrs in the Sun & Water

P

Page 15: 56th Annual 0 Report 2012/2013 - Emu Park Surf Lifesaving … · Training Officer Advanced Resuscitation Techniques 2 ... of new team members. The Training alendar ... a composite

Coaches: our kids can mix it with the best.

Parents – for your patience & support. Big thanks to all those Parents who chip in & help out.

It was a great effort by the parents to hold the junior branch with limited time for preparation. This is the strong part of the club where if needed parents all kick in and help to make sure that the kids are provided with a great carnival or just a good Sunday morning. Thanks to all the parents and the older brothers and sisters of the nippers.

North v South: this team was picked from Branch but due to the weather it was called off and will now hopefully be done at the start of the 2013/14 season. We were very well represented in the North Team.

Junior States Hervey Bay

Some fantastic results by the Emu Park kids & great to see the way the kids sup-ported each other and the way the par-ents supported not only their own but all of the team. A lot of hard work goes into getting the kids to this point but when you see them, enjoying themselves and making friends with other nippers from other clubs it makes it all worthwhile.

All our kids did extremely well with most making it through the Heats to Qtr's, Semi's & Finals. One of the most pleasing things over the carnival was witnessing par-ents asking kids (not their own) how they went or that they saw the event and con-gratulating them on their performance.

In the under 12’s we had Jacob Spark finish with bronze in the flags. An outstanding re-sults and I believe with a little luck he could have finished second if not first. Very well done.

He then backed that up with a third in the final of the Board Rescue with Ethan Mur-phy. These two boys go head to head in the water all the time with one winning one day and the other another day. To see them compete together and win Bronze was really something. They can go better next year.

Matilda Phelan won the swim for the third year running. She then backed up and won the iron women. Two gold at States. To see both events and feel the pride of the parents grandparents and the club on her wins was something very special. As men-tioned earlier at North Aussies I thought her swim was a good as I have ever seen by a junior. These two swims were as good but the reward of gold at States was more fitting.

P

Page 16: 56th Annual 0 Report 2012/2013 - Emu Park Surf Lifesaving … · Training Officer Advanced Resuscitation Techniques 2 ... of new team members. The Training alendar ... a composite

P

I have seen a lot of juniors compete in all sports and coached a lot of juniors in sports the one thing you cannot teach/coach is how to race. Matilda knows how to race and boy is she good at it.

Overall the performance of Emu Park was a credit to the club and the parents.

Junior Club Championships AGE CHAMPION / RUNNER UP

This season we introduced a new approach: To be eligible for Age Champion/Runner Up for your age group, there are mandatory criteria.

There are 2 Emu Park Nipper Points Days, 1 Wide Bay Capricorn Branch Carnival (which is mandatory attendance) and 1 Emu Park Junior Club Champi-onship.

The prerequisite to be eligible for this award is, you must attend 3 out of 4 eg: (2 Local, 1 Branch) or (1 Local, 1 Branch and 1 Club).

The 2 Emu Park Days will be POINTS days. (Single Events Only)

The Branch Carnival will be NO POINTS, BUT MAN-DATORY to attend.

The Junior Club Championships will be DOUBLE POINTS. (Single Events Only)

Our Points Days went off really well & it was great to see all the kids & Parents getting involved on the Beach.

See you on the Beach next Season

Thanks also to our long-time sponsors Jason

and Michelle Hooper from Emu Park Real Es-

tate. Jason and Michelle are moving on in

business and we really appreciate the finan-

cial support

that they have given the Club for the past

years as well as the volunteer roles that they

both play.

A big congratulations and thanks to our Sum-

mer Surf Girl for 2013 Mel Weber. At just 18

years of age, Mel is a “long time clubbie”

having been in the Club for over a decade.

Mel represented our great Club marvelously

during judging week and also helped raise

money for our Club. So excited was Nicole

Ramsey by the Summer Surf Girl Quest, that

Nic has already signed up for 2014 and has

big plans afoot.

I am pleased to report that the Emu Park

Branch of Bendigo Bank has agreed to a fur-

ther three-year sponsorship deal worth

$15,000. I would also encourage members

to support the Branch by taking some or all

of your banking business there. The Commu-

nity Branch model is special in that the

profits that the branch makes are put directly

back into the community by sponsorships

such as we have with the bank. We are in a

number of three year sponsorship deals for

Bronze Sponsorships ($1,000 per year) and

these were paid in full at the commence-

ment of the sponsorship arrangement.

We have stock on hand of clothing of

$14,135 and the majority of this was pur-

chased during the reporting period which is

why there is more expenditure of clothing

than sales.
