    Fitness Tests

  • Why Is Fitness Testing Carried Out? To provide a snapshot of an athletes fitness level.Test and re-test will show improvement or otherwise. Can provide motivation for athlete.Coach can compare results of athletes with each other or against preset standards. To monitor recovery from injury. To provide a baseline level on which to base a training programme. To add a competitive element to a training programme.

  • There Are two Types Of Fitness TestsNationally recognised and accredited tests. For example, the Beep Test.

Local tests. For example, the 5 Minute Bench Run.

  • Nationally Accredited TestsThese tests must be correctly administered. This then allows the results to be compared with norm tables or results worldwide.Failure to administer the tests correctly will greatly affect the validity and reliability of the test results.

Validity refers to the fact that the test must be recognised, test what it sets out to test and carried out in the prescribed way.Reliability refers to the fact that the test must produce consistent results over a number of trials.

  • Local TestsThese are not recognised outside the environment in which they are carried out. Consequently, comparisons cannot be made with results from other areas.

However, as long as the test is administered consistently every time, results can be compared between athletes who have completed the test.

  • In Terms Of GCSE PE:Only the recognised and accredited tests matter!

Credit will only be given in the exam for knowledge and understanding of these tests.
