This week on October 31st we commemorated the 500th anniversary of the day in 1517 when a 33 year-old German monk named Martin Luther, upset with the Church leadership's departure from Biblical truths, tacked his "95 Theses" on the door of the Schlosskirche in Wittenburg. During the Middle Ages, few people other than monks and priests knew how to read and write. However, with the Renaissance, more and more people became educated and learned how to read. At the same time, the printing press was invented allowing for new ideas, as well as scriptures of the Bible, to be easily printed and distributed. People were able to read the Bible for themselves for the first time. As he studied the Bible, Martin Luther began to question the practices of the Catholic Church. He found many areas where he felt the Bible and the Catholic Church disagreed. So on October 31st, 1517 Luther took a list of 95 points where he thought the Church had gone wrong and nailed it to the door of a Catholic Church. He called his document the ‘95 Theses’. One practice that Luther disagreed with was the paying of indulgences. This practice made people think they could be forgiven of their sins if they paid the Church money. However, Luther knew that forgiveness could only come from God. After he nailed his list to the church, the Catholics began to make less money and this made them mad so they kicked Luther out of the Church and called him a heretic. In those days heretics were often put to death so Luther went into hiding. Many people agreed with Martin Luther that the Catholic Church had become corrupt and most of northern Europe began to separate from the Catholic Church. Several new churches were formed such as the Lutheran Church and the Reformed Church. This became known as the Protestant Reformation. Luther eventually returned to Germany and became a hymn writer, where he had significant influence on the development of Church music. Luther made music, both instrumental and vocal, an important part of the new Lutheran Church, and included musical training in the curricula of the Lutheran schools he established. Luther also became a preacher and worked tirelessly to translate the Bible into German so that more people could read it on their own. Look out this week across our school for a variety of activities and displays celebrating the 500 year anniversary and the significant impact Martin Luther had on The Reformation. Tm 4 Wk 3 PRINCIPAL’S NEWS Thurs 2 November 2017

Dear Parents, This Tuesday, October 31st, marked a very important date as we celebrated 500 years of the Reformation. This was the date in 1517 when Martin Luther went to the castle church in Wittenberg, Germany and nailed his 95 theses to the door. This was a very significant action at the time as Luther boldly refuted many of the church teachings and customs which were not based on the Bible and did not reflect the Gospel message that God’s grace and forgiveness is a free gift to all. Under the Holy Spirit, Martin Luther helped people to see “For it is by grace that you have been saved, through faith—and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God—not by works so that no one can boast.” Ephesians 2:8-9 For Lutherans this significant anniversary is being celebrated not only in Germany but world wide. Many Lutheran churches held special Reformation services last Sunday and some will be commemorating the day on this coming Sunday. Lutheran schools are also marking the event with special activities. At Good Shepherd we are holding special devotions throughout the week. Some classes will be displaying core truths/values (maybe not 95) on their doors, others are learning about Lutheran symbols such as Luther’s Rose and one class is using a comic strip designer app to create Martin Luther’s story as a comic. For our school it is a time to reflect on our past and celebrate God’s blessings in our present and His good intentions for our future. We will also come together as a school family with our Grandfriends and special friends on Friday to worship and celebrate together. This will start at 9 a.m. in the Shepherd’s Hub. Anyone is welcome to join us. Last week I was very privileged to join Mrs Hooker and the Year six/seven students (and teachers and students from Vineyard Lutheran School, Clare) on camp in Canberra. It was an exciting, jam packed week as they learned more about our national capital. The students all had a fantastic time as they participated in a variety of educational activities focused on Australia’s history, culture, heritage and democracy. They toured the Australian Institute of Sport, the National Dinosaur Museum, old and new Parliament Houses, Questacon, National Library of Australia, National Museum of Australia, Capital Exhibition Centre, the National Gallery, Telstra Tower, the Australian War Memorial, Cockington Green, the Australian Mint, the National Arboretum and finished with a final photo on top of Mount Ainslie. It was great to see their enthusiasm. Wherever we went we heard many positive comments about our students’ behaviour and general good manners. They were exemplary ambassadors for Good Shepherd and we were very proud of them. If you would like to see some of the places that our students visited there is a photo collage of their trip on display in the Learning Street. As mentioned, tomorrow is Grandfriends day. We are very much looking forward to welcoming our special visitors to Good Shepherd starting with worship in the Shepherd’s Hub at 9 a.m. Grandfriends can then wander up to the school where each of the classes have planned special activities to share with them. We thank our wonderful P and F who are providing a delicious morning tea for our visitors at recess. On Friday night we will be promoting Good Shepherd at Faith’s Magnolia Fair, held on the grounds of Faith Lutheran College. Why not come by and say hello? Better still come by and bring all your friends. We’d love to share the Good Shepherd story with them too. Remember, although we are keeping our classes small there is still room for new enrolments, especially in the Foundation class. Every new enrolment means we can provide more for all our children across the school—everybody benefits. Blessings, Anne Marschall Principal

Tm 4 Wk 3 CANBERRA CAMP 2017 Thurs 2 November 2017

Our Na onal Capital “Canberra Camp was amazing this year, all the activities were super fun and full of new knowledge I hadn't really learn’t. My highlight of camp this year was Parliament House, I really enjoyed being able to stand on the top of Parliament House and meeting Tony Pasin. Tony Pasin is the Representative of Barker and he was just like us and now he is representing Barker which I found pretty cool. I also really enjoyed going to Cockington Green Gardens. I was so fascinated by all the detail that was put into to Cockington Green throughout all the little people and buildings. Other things I enjoyed was Questacon. My most favourite thing was the 6 metre slide and I have to thank Mrs Hooker for telling me to take a risk and have a go because I loved it so much I went on it 4 more times. Telstra Tower was so amazing especially at night being able to see all the lights was beautiful and so incredible, you could walk around all of the outside of Telstra Tower and see all of Canberra it was truly amazing. Over all I found Canberra really amazing with all the awesome activities we did and I found it super helpful as we are learning about government, it was just an amazing experience.” By Courtney Trenwith “I, and everyone else who attended, I’m sure, had a fantastic time travelling to Canberra last week. A couple of my personal favourite activities was getting to see Parliament House and the Australian War Memorial. Parliament House was different than I expected, in a good way, and we all actually got to see some members of Parliament sitting in the House of Representatives while we were there, as well as meeting with Tony Pasin, the member for Barker, which is the division in which most of us live. The War memorial was also a highlight as it was great to see all of the artefacts from the War and seeing the big walls with all of the fallen soldiers from the 2 World Wars. Other highlights of the camp included Questacon, where we had lots of fun with all the interactive elements (especially the 6 metre free fall slide!) , Cockington Green, with all the miniature models, and Telstra Tower, with great views of Canberra. We got to see the National Library and the Royal Australian Mint. Finally, staying at the AIS was a great experience, and we got to try 3 different sports, Sock Wrestling, European Handball, and Basketball in their official venues. “ By Denver Marschall

Last week all students in Year 6 and 7 traveled to our national capital Canberra. We had a brilliant time and learnt so much about our government. Our school captains have reflected on their time in Canberra :

CHAPLAIN’S NEWS WHAT ARE YOUR CHILDREN REALLY FIGHTING ABOUT?

If you have more than one child, I bet you have yelled at your kids,

"Be nice to each other!"

But has that phrase ever worked in the history of humankind? Have any children suddenly stopped and thought, "You're right! I had forgotten to be nice to my brother. Thanks for the reminder, Mum."? Siblings fight. Even though they seem to be fighting over who holds the TV remote, who gets through a door first or who can play with an old toy that someone found in the basement that no one has been interested in for four years, very often they are really fighting over you. They want you to intervene in the situation and prove your love for them, preferably by annihilating their brother. If your kids know you love them equally and have no favourites, you will take away a lot of the fuel for sibling rivalry. Life isn't fair – but that doesn't let us off the hook. We should seek to be as fair as we can. A kitchen timer can be a wonderful independent referee for controlling turns on a game, trampoline or laptop.
