Dear Families of Immaculate Heart of Mary, This weekend we celebrate the Epiphany. The splendid magi, all sparkle and dash and solemnity, march right up off the pages of Matthew’s Gospel and into our churches today. Matthew alone tells us this grand and seductive story so that we might see the light and know that the child these magi visited is the fulfillment of prophecy, the king of the world that stretches to the magi’s home country and beyond, right down the ages to us. We too see and understand anew. Like the magi, our patron saints for this day, we see in the newborn child the king of the universe and light of the world. Like the magi, we find in ourselves a new faith and a new life. Like them, we return to our home by a new route. We are asked to come away from this festive season ourselves renewed and awake to the presence of God among us. We are asked to find God where God is to be found, to be attentive and surprised and ready to bow down in adoration and to offer our gifts. +++ Queridas familias del Inmaculado Corazón de Maria, Los espléndidos Reyes Magos—destellantes, majestuoso y solemnes–, salen hoy de las páginas de Mateo y van rumbo a nuestra iglesia. Solamente Mateo nos habla de esta grande e interesante historia para que podamos ver la luz y saber que el niño que visitaron los Reyes Magos era el cumplimiento de la profecía, el rey cuyo mensaje llega hasta la tierra natal de estos magos y mucho más allá, hasta nuestra época. Nosotros también nuevamente podemos ver y entender. Al igual que estos magos, nuestros santos patrones en este día, vemos en el niño recién nacido al rey del universo y la luz del mundo. Como los Reyes Magos, encontramos dentro de nosotros una nueva fe y una nueva vida. Como ellos, regresamos a casa por una nueva ruta. Se nos pide que terminemos esta temporada festiva renovados y consientes de la presencia de Dios entre nosotros. Se nos pide encontrar a Dios donde se le puede encontrar, que estemos atentos y listos para, con asombro, inclinarnos en adoración y ofrecer nuestras ofrendas. El 12 de enero, los Servidores del Altar (monaguillos) tendran su entrenamiento despues de la Misa de las 8:00am y al terminar se servira helado en el Salon. HOUR ADORATION Every first Friday of the month starting January, 2019, we will be using the 8-foot monstrance for the 24-Hour Adoration. We likewise request that you include in your time of prayer with the Lord in the Blessed Sacrament the intention of the Holy Father which would be posted by the doors of the Chapel every month. A New Thrift Store in Town! Did you know St. Vincent de Paul of Contra Costa County has a Thrift Store in Brentwood? Have you been there? It is located on Brentwood Blvd, on the same lot with Ace Hardware.....lots of parking. One thing about thrift stores, they have a unique way to discount their prices. They use a colored tag to show the price of the item, but that price gets lowered each month, although with only a few employees, they don't remark the items. They have a chart which tells you the discount for each color of tag. That means there will be many different color of tags in a rack of clothing but the price shown is just what is was the first month. The second month, the price is 25% off, the third month 50% off and the fourth month, 75% off. Look for which color tag gets 75% off this month and get some real bargains. The St. Vincent de Paul at IHM is one of 29 Conferences making up the Contra Costa County Council. We all benefit from the St. Vincent de Paul Thrift Shops. There are two others, one in Pleasant Hill and one in Pittsburg. Have fun shopping!
Annual Birthright of Brentwood Baby Bottle Fundraiser After all Masses - January 26 and 27, 2019
It is that time of year again. Birthright of Brentwood will be handing out baby bottles after all masses the weekend of January 27 and 28. We ask that you
take one or more bottles, fill it with change and return it during the month of February (or whenever it is full). There will be a bin at the church entrance for returned bottles or you can always return a bottle to the church office. Birthright of Brentwood is a pro-life community counseling and support center in Brentwood since 1995. Our office is across the street from Liberty High School. Our telephone number is 925.634.1275. We provide pregnancy testing, counseling, referrals, and material support (layette items and clothing) for pregnant women and their families without regard for age, marital status, religion, income, or ethnicity. Our services are always free and completely confidential. We are a volunteer organization so 100% of your donation goes to helping girls, women, and families from the communities of Brentwood, Antioch, Oakley, Byron, and Knightsen.

EXPLANATION OF THE EPIPHANY According to the Catechism of the Catholic Church: the Epiphany is the manifestation of Jesus as Messiah of Israel, Son of God and Savior of the world. The great feast of the Epiphany celebrates the adoration of Jesus and the wise men (Magi) from the East, together with his baptism in the Jordan and the wedding feast at Cana in Galilee.
Explicacion de la Fiesta de la Epifania Segun el Catecismo de la Iglesia Catolica: La Epifania es la manifestacion de Jesus como el Mesias de Israel, Hijo de Dios y Salvador del mundo. La gran fiesta de la Epifania celebra la adoracion de Jesus y los Reyes Magos del Este, junto con su bautismo en el Rio Jordan y la fiesta del matrimonio de de Cana en Galilea.
Scripture study:
Are you interested in deepening your understanding of, and engagement in the Mass and drawing closer to Jesus? Come join us for a scripture study to delve into the coming weekly readings from our Priests and Deacons. We will discuss the historical context, in both Jewish and Catholic faith traditions, and then explore together practical applications of the readings. This will make us all more alert and receptive to Homilies at Mass, a modest investment that reaps major blessings! Each week we will cover the reading from the Old and New Testament in our Sunday/Holy Day Mass readings. Fridays, beginning Dec. 8, our scripture study will be from 2-3pm in the Library. Our facilitator, Dr. Allan Steinhardt, will go over background context and Catholic understanding of the readings, and then we will break into groups to discuss applications. Dr. Steinhardt has been teaching Bible studies for Adult RE, and RCIA, for over thirty years. He is a Jewish convert, and has corresponded with various Bishops and Cardinals on Jewish Catholic relations, including Cardinal Dulles, and Bishop Gregory, as well as the late Father John Neuhaus. Widow and Widowers Group Has your spouse died? Are you finding it hard to cope? Have you been able to find a new normal life yet? Come and meet others who are walking the “grief trail.” Widow/widowers Grief Group meets weekly at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, 500 Fairview Avenue, Brentwood from 5pm to 6:15pm Thursdays in the IHM Hall B. Open to all. A monthly potluck and also a Happy Hour (emphasis on fellowship!) is held monthly at the home of Mary Ann Smith, 443 Tayberry Lane in Brentwood. Come and bring a dish to share. We are a very vibrant an active parish in Brentwood whose mission is, “with Mary, we seek to know Christ better and to make him better known through our words and actions.” We do this in a variety of ways through our several sacramental programs, social outreach, as well as our active ministries, Bible studies, and energetic youth program. We also LOVE new parishioners and hold quarterly “Welcoming Gathering” specifically those new to IHM. See our bulletin for details on the date for the next upcoming gathering. Ministry of Caring Members, Tony and Jan Khalil, will be teaching a class at IHM starting on Sunday, February 3rd and running for six Sundays from 2:30 to 5:00pm. This FREE class is being offered by NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness) for parents, guardians or grandparents as well as teachers or counselors who want to know more about mental health issues in children and adolescent.
