What is Ready Gen?

Ready Gen is a comprehensive core ELA curriculum using text sets and routine based instruction.

The goals of Ready Gen are:1. To build strong readers that can develop big ideas and

understandings about all kinds of texts.2. Promote thinking and understanding through text

based evidence.3. Grow reading stamina and practice close reading on a

daily basis.4. To practice writing that is closely linked to their

reading and is text based.

What does a Ready Gen Lesson look like?

• First Read- Students read a portion of that days text independently

• Close Read/Text Based Conversation- Class meets and rereads part or all of the text and teacher

guides discussion.• Thinking Map or Shared Activity- Class works

together to grow ideas about text• Independent Task- Students apply information

from thinking map to complete work• Support/Extension- small groups work together

to support or extend students work.• Share

Independent Work

• Reading Analysis• Historical context is the time and place in

which events took place. When reading biographies, analyze historical context to better understand the world in which the person lived. It also helps readers understand the relationships between people, events and ideas - as well as the challenges - particluar to a specific place and time.

Independent Writing

• Students write daily• Students choose their own topics within a

certain genre• Students use a writers notebook and folder to

organize their writing• Teacher’s role is a facilitator… circulating,

monitoring, encouraging, conferencing and helping as needed.• When you’re done, you’ve just begun!”

Writing Conferences

• Teachers confer with students on a daily basis to help them grow individually.

• Conferencing happens during the independent writing portion.

• Teacher confer with students once every 2-3 weeks or a as needed.

• Student are given focused personal goals to work on

Sharing

• Sharing is an integral part of writers workshop

• Students are given opportunities to share their writing

• Writers learn from example and are able to take risks
