In War, Baptism Before Gunfire Faced With Threat of War, Many Soldiers Turn to Religion

While hundreds of soldiers with rifles slung over their shoulders looked on, eight young men in green shorts and T-shirts approached the alter during last Sunday’s church services at this military camp in the northern Kuwaiti desert. One by one they received blessings from a chaplain and plunged into a freshly dug pool to be baptized, emerging to raucous applause.

As war approaches, the canvas chapels in Kuwait’s military camps and logistics bases are jammed with worshipers, many of whom have not crossed the threshold of a church back home in years. The sermons on placing faith in a higher power at moments of crisis seem to resonate now more strongly than ever with many soldiers.

“I don’t’ know about you, but I find myself talking to God a lot more out here than I did at the rear,” said the Rev. Bill Roberts. “I couldn’t be happier to see so many new faces out here.

Many troops call such “foxhole religion” critical to their preparation for war, saying it provides confidence that they will be protected if called upon to fight and faith that their mission is just.

“After today, I feel more ready to go to war,” said one of the soldiers baptized Sunday. “This is better armor than anything the military could give me.

Since the time of George Washington, the US Military has brought along

uniformed ministers to address the spiritual needs of the its soldiers. “We jump out of airplanes with them. We are on the field with them,” said one nondenominational minister.

As noncombatants on the battlefield, Chaplains travel unarmed, protected by a soldier who does carry a rifle. In war, most are assigned to medical units to help comfort the wounded and give last rites. After fighting, they focus on helping the troops deal with emotions. All branches of the military require chaplains to undertake several years of training.

Troops in the field often stop by the Chaplain’s tent at odd hours. Most of them just want to talk about what’s coming up.

Most Chaplains’ acknowledge afterward, as artillery shells rumbled on a nearby firing range that battlefield conversions do not often survive the peace. “I know this doesn’t necessarily mean that God will be in their lives forever,” said one Chaplain. “But their experiences over here will help them, and if that means bringing God more into the picture, so much the better.”

To Whom It May Concern:

In response to your January 29 letter, I will not bring any witnesses to my hearing. If there is any additional information I need to submit to you, please let me know. I look forward to presenting my case to the Board.

Enclosed you will find a newspaper article about finding religion in the military. It shows that I could do some good in the military even as a non-combatant.

From: David Simms 1/22/XX Subject: Induction of Charles Walker

To Whom It May Concern:

I am the former Pastor of the Sugar Grove Lutheran Church and had a hand in hiring Pastor Charles Walker upon my retirement. I can tell you that he is a full-time minister, but like me, he requires another job to make a living. We have a very small congregation of 50 members at Sugar Grove and the church is only able to pay him a nominal salary, not nearly enough to support himself. His duties at the church encompass at least 40 hours a week and he performs them admirably.

I hope you take into consideration that Pastor Walker is a man of God and should not be expected to kill anyone. He would rather die himself than take the life of another human being.

Sincerely,

David A. Simms

To: Local Board #28 Jan 22, 20XX

From: Jimmy Proctor

I am an Elder at Sugar Grove Lutheran Church and Charles Walker is our Pastor. It has come to my attention that Pastor Walker has received an induction notice. I hope you will see fit not to draft Pastor Walker. He is the Pastor of our church and he takes care of all ministerial duties. He holds two sermons on Sundays and one on Wednesday night. He has Bible Studies and visitations throughout the week. He truly fits the Minister of Religion classification.

I also know that he is conscientiously opposed to war. You could not expect a Pastor, someone who has dedicated his life to God, to go out and kill other people. It goes against everything he has been taught and believes in. A man of God cannot be expected to kill, even for his country. God takes precedence over all, even country.

Please do the right thing and make sure Pastor Walker does not get drafted.

Sincerely,

Jimmy V. Proctor

Pastor Charles M. Walker

Sugar Grove Lutheran Church Sugar Grove, AS

January 22, 20XX

I am writing to inform you that I am applying for Conscientious Objector as a non-combatant member of the Armed Forces and Minister of Religion classifications. I am the pastor of the Sugar Grove Lutheran Church and have held this position for the past year. As a minister I am obligated to help people and lead them to God. Killing another person is absolutely out of the question. If I am to be drafted I would like to go as a non-combatant. I feel my role, as a minister could be beneficial to the men and women in combat. They will need God during these trying times and I can help bring them to him. I look forward to presenting my case to the Local Draft Board. Yours in Christ, Charles M. Walker SSRN: 79-7654321-7
