S A V E T H E D A T E ! PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE: Welcome to November everyone! We are getting things ready for your child’s report card which will be emailed to you on Wednesday, November 22nd. Student-Led Conferences (SLCs) will take place from 4:00pm – 7:00pm on Tuesday, November 28th and Thursday, November 30th. We will open up our on-line booking for SLCs (with homeroom teachers) on Tuesday, November 14th. That opportunity will close on Friday, November 17th. If you do not book an SLC time online, a date and time will be assigned to you. If you cannot attend SLCs, please schedule an alternate date and time for your child’s SLC with their homeroom teacher. If you would like to meet with one of your child’s non-homeroom teachers, please make arrangements to do so at any point in time in the 2017/2018 school year. We also encourage all parents and guardians (Grade 6, 7 and 8 students) to access their child’s mark-book using the username and password that were provided to you this past month. It is a good tool to stimulate the discussion between parents and their kids about learning.

SCC NEWS: Each year, a main area of focus for the School Community Council (SCC) is to support the OM Irwin School Learning Goals. This year we are excited to assist in encouraging all of the students in our school to improve their writing skills!! We have a few ideas that we will be implementing throughout the year, with the first activity happening just before the November SLC’s. Each student will be bringing home a “Writing Philosophy Template” for their parents
or guardians to fill out. You are welcome to write as much as you like, or it can be as simple as writing 1 or 2 sentences telling your child (or children) why writing is important to you, or maybe how you use this essential skill on a daily basis. (It can be anonymous so there is absolutely no pressure) These templates will also be available at the SLC’s and on the school website. In order to make this a little more fun, every student whose parent or guardian brings their filled-in template with them to the SLC’s in November, will have their name entered for a chance to win some awesome prizes! Enjoy this last bit of fall before we’re back in full winter gear!
K-KIDZ FOOD DRIVE:
The Irwin K-Kidz would like to thank everyone for their participation in the FCC Food Drive.
This year we collected 721.8 pounds.
Thanks for the donations Irwin ICE!!
TERRY FOX FUNDRAISER: Thank you to all the families who supported the annual Terry Fox Run in September! Also thanks to Mrs. Robinson, Mr. Darby, Mr. Wong and Mr. Froese for being such good sports during this fundraiser. Mrs. Robinson kissed a goat, Mr. Darby and Mr. Wong shaved their heads and Mr. Froese shaved his beard all to support our fundraising! Irwin School raised a total of $6,893.35 for cancer research! If you made your cheque out directly to the Terry Fox Foundation they will issue a tax receipt in the coming months and you will receive it by mail.
School Emergency Plan
This fall our school’s Occupational Health and Safety Committee has been developing our
school’s Emergency Management Plan (EMP). The purpose of the plan is to make sure that in the event of an emergency, that students and staff have been trained in order to be prepared
if such a situation took place. In October, our Committee met with the RCMP and the Swift Current Fire Department to assess our draft plan and offer suggestions to improve it. Over
the course of this school year, our staff will be learning about their responsibilities within the plan. This will be done each month at our staff meetings. We will also practice various
aspects of the plan with our students and staff. These practices in the 2017/2018 school year will be communicated in advance of them happening.
Fire Drills (6 of them) – September, October, November, February, May and June Shelter-in-Place Drills (2 of them) – January and April
Lockdown Drills (2 of them) – December and March Duck, Cover and Hold Drills (2 of them) – February and April
All of these drills will be conducted with communication and advance notice to students and families. Please take some time to speak with your child about the need of having a plan and
being prepared if an emergency ever took place at school.

Irwin School’s Fundraising Plan for 2017/2018
In order to support past school related trips (Ski Trip, Grade 4 Trip to Regina, etc) and to purchase items to support our schools’ Extra-Curricular Program, we have used various fund-raising programs to raise these funds (Mom’s Pantry, Magazine Campaign, etc). As a staff, in consultation with our school’s SCC, we have decided to pursue a different fundraising plan for the 2017/2018 school year. 1. We will have a School Dessert Auction Event
where we will auction off samples of student writing, art, PAA projects, etc. We will also have a live and silent auction for various collectibles, gift certificates, etc. We do not have a date yet; this date will be decided upon at the November 1 staff meeting. If you would like to donate an item for this event, please contact me at the school.
2. We will host a Community Garage Sale at Irwin
on Friday, May 11th and Saturday, May 12th. Items can be dropped off at school on Thursday, May 10th.
Specific details about where the money will be spent will be shared in the December Newsletter. Mr. Kielo
Colour Day Friday, November 24. Each class chooses a colour and dresses in that
colour for the day.
Our junior curling program starts on Tuesday, November 7th and will run each Tuesday from 4:00 to 5:00. Students are responsible for their own transportation to and from the curling rink. There are some brooms and sliders for students to borrow. You just need clean, indoor running shoes and comfortable clothing that allows movement. Students receive instruction at the level they are at, from beginner to advanced. No prior experience is necessary. All are welcome! Please sign up on the sheet outside the office by Friday, November 3rd if you would like to join curling this year.

TATTLING VS TELLING/REPORTING
TATTLING TELLING/REPORTING The goal is to get someone in
trouble.
The goal is to help someone.
Kids can resolve conflict without an
adult.
Kids need adult help to resolve
conflict.
Behaviour is harmless. No one is
hurt or in danger.
Behaviour is harmful or dangerous
to someone or something.
The kid who is tattling may have
something to gain: attention, desire
to control others.
The kids who are telling have tried
to solve the problem and it has not
stopped.
How to solve a problem:* 1. Take a few deep breaths to calm down. Breathe in while counting to three, hold for three,
breathe out for three.
2. What is the problem?
3. Think of some possible solutions.
4. Pick a solution and think about: What would happen if I solve the problem this way?...Would
it be safe?...Would it be fair?...How would everyone feel?
5. Decide on a solution and give it a try!

From Michele’s Desk:
OM Irwin School’s Remembrance Day service is on Friday, November 10th at 10:30am. Families are encouraged to attend. We would like our students to dress formally that day. We are going to continue the Virtual Wall of Honour featuring local veterans that we featured last year. We invite families to send us a digital copy of their family members who have served or are currently serving in the Canadian Armed Forces. The photos will be displayed in a slide show during our service. Please email a digital copy of your loved one to [email protected] by Nov 8th if you wish to participate in the Virtual Wall of Honour. Photos will not be duplicated or shared publicly; they will only be viewed during our service. Please include the name(s) of the student and the name(s) of the veterans so we can include them in the slideshow. If you sent a photo last year, we will use it again. This year one of the goals for all students in the Chinook School Division is to develop their skills in writing, and we would like to tie this to our Remembrance Day service. We would like families to write about their connection to the Canadian Military; sit down with your child and write a story about a family member that has served, or is currently serving in the military. We would like students to share these at school, and some will be read at the Remembrance Day service. Thank you for your participation!

Girls' Intermediate Volleyball: Team Red We would like to thank the girls for a great season! Without a Junior League, we had two intermediate teams comprised of grade six to eight students. The focus was on skill development, and creating a positive team mentality. The girls improved on serving and passing accuracy. We were excited to play in the gold medal finals during our home tournament, achieving second place. Our season ends the first week in November, with our final game in Herbert on Thursday, November 2nd. Please remember to wash and return your jersey as soon as possible. Then the $20.00 jersey deposit will be refunded. A special "Thank you!" to Mrs. Tinant for helping with volleyball announcements and filling in for coaching duties when needed. Mr. Darby & Mrs. Schommer
