Learning Plans
Jo-Anne McShane
Questions to ask yourself…
What do I plan to learn?
How do I plan to learn?
Who will be able to assist me?
How long will it take me to learn?
What areas of my practice do I need to change?
Did I learn what I thought I would?
What else did I learn?
What else do I now need to learn?
How can I put what I have learnt into practice?
Registration Standards
Nursing and Midwifery Board:
• ‘identified and prioritised their learning needs, based on an evaluation of their practice against the relevant competency standards.
• developed a learning plan based on identified learning needs.
• participated in effective learning activities relevant to their learning needs (CPD)
• reflected on the value of the learning activities or the effect that participation will have on their practice.’

The competencies which make up the RN-ANMC Competency Standards are organized into 4 domains:

Competency 7.4: Responds effectively to unexpected or rapidly changing situations
Sometimes I feel that my workplace is stressful and I feel overwhelmed at times. I do not feel comfortable in Emergency situations such as a MET calls and often feel pressured not to call one.
This year I will attend MET training or ALS to help me feel more comfortable in emergency situations. I will also reflect on stressful situations and ask for assistance when needed.
Attended ALS training- DATE, HOURS including study time.
After attending the ALS training I felt much more comfortable in attending emergencies of the ward. I understand we work as a team. Not long after attending the course I had a patient who collapsed in the bathroom….

Competency 3.1 Identifies the relevance of research to improving individual/group health outcomes
I believe in evidence practice , however feel that some of our practice is not up to date. I think I should start a journal club to investigate potential changes we may implement to improve our patients care.
This year I will organise 4 in-services. I will obtain a journal article of relevance to my area and discuss the implications for research with my colleagues.
The following articles were reviewed…dates, times and hours spent in preparation and discussion.
Reflection: Starting a journal club…(what did I learn, how is it relevant to my practice, is there the potential for research in my area?)
