BALL BRIEFS

"NEW COACH AT UNI . HIGH OLD BOYS"ROBERT REID is not a new face around

U .H.S .O .B ., in fact it is one of the oldest. Asa player, his first game was in 1964 and he

now has the fine total of 210 games. Duringthese games, he held down most positionsaround .the ground from the forward to theback line.

During one of his many "retirements" fromplaying he turned to administration (1968) andwas President in 1975-76 and Secretary jr,1977 .

Robert is a worthy life-member and overrecent years has been one of the tirelessworkers around the club . The examples andstandards Robert has set whilst working forUni . High have earned him a great deal ofrespect from all who know him .

An example of this is the way in whichthe players have rallied around Robert thisyear, his first as senior coach .

Robert has tasted the bitterness of defeat, but also the sweetness of victory . If hisefforts for the club in previous years are anyindication of what his efforts as coach shallbe then success must surely be forthcoming .

Good luck - Robert Reid !

MICK GEORGE plays his 50th game forFAWKNER today. Mick who is vice-captain ofreserves, but who has played in all seniorgames so far this year, joined the Fawks 4years ago . Mick who doesn't know what give-in means would have reached his 50 gamesearly last season except for a serious eyeinjury which kept him sidelined for 11 weeksin 1975. Mick was reserves best and fairestplayer last season also . All at Fawkner wishMick all the best for today and the future .

° MARCELLIN and DE LABACK IN STEP

By JAN HOWAR D

Again, last Saturday, strong winds and sloppy ground surfaces did not favour, nony sides. The advent of wintry conditions has brought many early successfulsto a halt. Mud is said to be a great speed-leve ller. The "slower" sides are nowbetter able to hold their own against the more "fteet-of-foot" .

jhe bubble burst for both A SectionI<,ci r ; last week when Marcellin re-co i ded a fifteen point victory over topside Old Scotch . By virtue of the re-cent successes Marcellin are now lyingff l h - out of the four on percentageonly . They can prove today ( againstUniv . Blues) whether this was a fluke% , i n, or not .

De La Salle returned to the winninglist ~~.ith a resounding fifty-one point%ictory over University Blues . A score-I c, ~ first term made the Blues task almostimpossible though they did outscore DeL. Salle after quarter-time.

Ivanhoe were also back amongst thev, inners when they scored by nine pointsmcr North Old Boys after leading allla« .

St. Bernard's moved into fourth placec ich a comfortable win over CaulfieldGrammarians, whose success was short-lived . Against Old Scotch today, St .B<<nard's have the opportunity to showhow good they are (and thereby perhapshelp Peter Brukner out in future weeks) .

University Blacks recorded theirsocond win by defeating a disappointing

Ormond (who have now dropped backto seventh) . The Blacks came from fivepoints down at half-time to win byfourteen

. Still Old Melburnians continue to"lord" it over all in B section. A goal-less third term put Parkside out of therace last week - in a game which wasmarred by poor goal-shooting from bothteams . O.M.'s will, perhaps, try to im-prove their accuracy with some solidpractice today as they enjoy the bye .

Collegians, who seem to be in a de-pression, fell out of the four when theywere well beaten by Old Paradians, whohave now moved into second place .Parade have the chance to consolidateagainst Old Haileyburians today - theloser could well be out in the cold againafter this round .

Old Haileyburians (fourth) will, how-ever, be looking for another win aftertheir defeat of Fawkner last week . Afterbeing three goals down at the lastchange they went on to win by eightpoints.

Although inaccurate, Coburg doubledMonash Blues score, to record their firstwin for the season (excluding the bye) .

Power House and State Bank returnedto the D Section four last week afterconvincing wins over Elsternwick andHeatherton respectively .

Power House led comfortably all dayto win by eighty-seven points, whilstState Bank managed a six-goal win in agame of amazing accuracy from bothsides.

Old Camberwell Gram. gained them-selves a four point breathing space atthe top with their win over Count ryColleges .

St . Kevin's Old Boys continue to besecond after leading West Brunswick a llday . Playing at the school today theywill be keen to win again before the"re-unioning" crowd .

out of the four. Old Geelong's spot hasbeen filled by A .M .P. who scored overan extremely inaccurate La TrobeBlacks .

Brunswick recorded their first winwhen they accounted for A.N.Z . Bankconvincingly, the more so after half-time .

Old Mentonians won narrowly fromNorth Brunswick in a relatively low-scoring game.

In F Section results were symmetrical- the top four won - the bottom fourdidn't - and the team in the middle(National Bank) had the bye .

The narrowest margin was recordedby Thornbury - against Footscray I .T.,followed by Commonwealth Bank overClayton, Therry over University Reds .The day's "honours" went to BulleenUnited with their ninety-three point winover Monash Whites .

Hampton Rovers kicked the sweep inthe Juniors to win by twenty-two goalsover Geelong.

North Old Boys remain unbeaten, lastweek scoring over Ormond . UniversityBlues defeat of previously unconqueredOld Scotch enabled them to stay withthe top bracket, whilst giving North afour-point break.

Ivanhoe accounted for the "Blacks"easily, as did Monash for St . Bernard's.This win put Monash four points clearin fourth position .

Kew's thirteen point victory put anend to De La Salle's unbeaten run . OldHaileybury maintained second spot witha win over Fawkner, after trailing athalf-time.

Old Paradians moved into sixth placefollowing their eleven goal win overM.H .S .O .B ., whilst Coburg retained thirdby accounting for fifth place holderCaulfield Grammarians .

Therry - West Brunswick - whoknows? I certainly do not !

PREVIEWING TODAY'S GAMESA SECTIO N

Another disastrous day for the A Gradetipster last Saturday . As the season progresses,I'm getting worse instead of better . At leastit means plenty of interest and this year'scompetition is the most even for many years .After six games there are still ten teams whocan make the fina!s . There are no easy gamesand from the tipsters point of view no suchthing as a certainty.

Scotch and Blues were both due for a lossand I'm sure it will do them both no harm .De Lo are back in business, whilst Marcellin,Blacks and St. Bernard's are all moving upthe ladder.

Old Scotch meet St. Bernard's today atElsternwick Park . Scotch blotted their copy-book last week at Marcellin and will be deter-mined to get back on the winning list today .Overconfidence and the wet weather probablycost them the game last week, but I'm surethey'll be back to their best form today .St. Bernard's once again did the wrong thingby yours truly last week-I must get themright, soon. They are obviously a top side whenthey put it all together. Scotch cannot affordto take them lightly and I don't think theywill . Scotch to win .

Blues also had their reputation dented lastweek and can't be considered a top side untilthey beat some of their main rivals . Theirnext three games against Marcellin, St Bern-ard's and Scotch will tell the story . Marcellinare riding high at the moment with successivewins against St. Bernard's and Scotch andthey are confident of making it three in arow . The Blues big guns Sleeman, Brown,Dabble and Trumble went missing last weekand the whole team played without despera-tion . Perhaps, like Scotch, they were justoverconfident, or perhaps they are not asgood as they think. I think they'll come backand beat Marcellin today in what should bea great game.

Ormond lost a game they expected to winlast week against Blacks . They are desperatefor a win and the advantage of their smallhome ground will make them difficult op-ponents for Be La Salle . Last year's premierscame back to something like their 1977 formwith a good win over Uni Blues . Their experi-enced players like McDonnell, Loft, Haiassa,Bourke and McHenry showed a welcome re-turn to form and Simon Beddoe again per-formed brilliantly around the goals . Theiryounger players are blending in well and Ican't see them faltering today .

Last year's runners-up North Old Boys arebottom of the ladder with only one win andtoday meet Uni Blacks. North showed somesigns of a return to form in the second halflast week but will have to improve further tomatch Blacks . The Uni side returned to th e

Page 6

winning list last week with a good win overOrmond . They have finally vindicated my faithin them and I see no reason to desert themnow.

Caulfield's winning run came to an endlast week in the wet, windy conditions atSt. Bernard's and they'll be glad to get backto Albert Park for the visit of Ivanhoe .Ivanhoe are a small side but they move theball well and played good football at Elstern-wick Park last week . This game should be aclose one and it's only their home groundadvantage that has swung me Caulfield's way .

Before I go may I congratulate all thoseselected to wear the "big V" next Sundayand wish coaches Peter O'Donoghue andBernie Sheehy and their teams the best ofluck . I hope every Amateur footballer will beat Elsternwick Park next week to cheer bothteams on to victory.

This week's tips : Old Scotch, Uni Blues ,De La Salle, Uni Blacks and Caulfield. -PETER BRUKNER .

B SECTIO N

I will try and forget about lost week . Notone winner . (We all have our bad days.)

Congratulations to Coburg on their first wi nfor the season . It's a nice feeling, isn't it!

This week's round of matches promises tobe just as hard to pick with four very evengames to be played out .

Old Haileybu ry after a good win last weekmeet the consistent Old Paradians at Keys-borough . I feel Haileybury can take this oneout if they can show the same dedication thatthey displayed last week . Poradions are doingeverything right at the momenf and will bevery hard to beat . This is where the advan-tage of playing at home comes into account, and I think Haileybury will take full use ofthis and win out.

Parkside meet their old rivals Fawkner atthe Parkside ground. This will also be a toughone. Both teams lost last week and will bedesperate for a win to steady themselves.Parkside have not lost a game at home thisseason and this will probably be the decider, but their kicking for goal will have to showa vast improvement on last week if they areto win . One goal, ten behinds from sixteenshots in the last quarter-not good enough towin anything. I will go for Porkside in a closeone .

Collegians at home to Coburg will be an-other photo finish . Collegians have hit aslump, while the young Coburg side havefound their feet . Once again both teams willbe desperate for a win and the advantage ofplaying at home will become vital. I will tipCollegians, if they can put their game to-gether out there and I think they can .

THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER - MAY 27, 1978

PREVIEWS (cont )In the last game to be looked at Monash

Blues Play host to Old Tri nity. This one is alsoa toss up. I was impressed with the wayTrinity handled the game when I saw themtwo weeks ago, and with the rest last weekto get over a few hard knocks they shouldcome up fresh enough to win over the Blues .

I can only repeat that all sides tipped mustplay at their best to win, as the competitionhas evened out dramatically, with no easyones, and there will be many upsets beforethis season is over .

Old Melburnians have the Bye, and arelooking forward to a well earned rest .

SELECTIONS : Old Haileyburians, Parkside,Collegians and Old Trinity Gram. - BRIANLAUDER.

C SECTION

Old Brighton and A .J .A.X. let me down lastweek and now this year's "C" is on a par withlast year's "B"-eight teams all within strikingdistance of the four. After today I predictthat only four points will separate {ourth fromseventh.

St. Kilda will kick the "sweep" today out atKew and retain its unbeaten record . St . Kildaare certainly the form team and coach MaurieBilston must feel confident that his team hasthe second-to-none chance of returning to BSection next season .

Old Ivanhoe slipped against St . Kilda andmay find Old Brighton, on the rebound, alittle hard to hold . Scores will be close at thefinal siren, but Brighton's consistency will giveit the edge .

Old Carey gained confidence last weekagainst a "handball-happy" Geelong and willtrouble Hampton Rovers. With the return ofCooke to the goal-front and the activeness ofMill, Carey is going to improve its rating irithe weeks ahead. I am tempted to take apunt on Carey-but Syd Whitfield has such a"tinny" lead in this 'crazy competition thatI must play safe and favour Hampton-butonly just .

Alphington and Old Xave rians is anybody'sgame and I was impressed with the wins ofboth teams over leading lights Old Brightonand A.J .A .X . I was nearly selecting five"away" teams but a sudden change of mindpersuades me to stick with Alphington athome .

Geelong can play as brilliantly as any teamin the grade and if it produces this form itwil!,beat A .J .A.X. After winning its last threegames, it has gained in confidence . To-day,at A.J .A .X ., if it plays directly on the shortAlbert Park ground, three in a raw will be-came four in a row. With tongue-in-cheek,I'll stick with Geelong .

SELECTIONS : St. Kilda C.B.C .O .C., OldBrighton Gram ., Hampton Rovers, Alphington,Geelong.-JIM FIDGE.

D`SECTION

As our Editor stated this Section is a tip-ster's nightmare . The evident evenness of sidesis a promoter's dream and at Kilmore, boyswere taught wind and rain are the greatfootball levellers . At this stage of a seasonall clubs are capable of winning to add tothe tipster's problems.

Heatherton await University High SchoolOld Boys who make the long southern journey .Heatherton, smarting from last week's AlbertPark ~reversal, will be all out to crush the'Green and Brown' boys who are facing thepossibility of the drop to 'E' Section . Heather-ton is my selection. I predict a convincing winfor them .

Melbourne High School Old Boys have placedthemselves within grasp of the Top Four .Today they await Elsternwick who collapsedlast week. At Forest Hill, the local side willbe all out to score a victory and move up theladder as a consequence. Elsternwick, too, will be trying hard to win . This season, littleseparates the sides but I believe MelbourneHigh, at home, will just have enough talentto win .

In what shapes as a preview of a finalgame, State' Bank journey east to play theleaders, Old Camberwell Grammari ans. Camber-well are doing all that is asked of them .Peter Hutchinson must be happy that hismessages of playing consistently and believingin one's own ability appear to have at lastfallen on receptive ears . State Bank are pro-gressing well but away from home I doubt ifthey can extend Old Camberwell whom Iselect to win .

St . Kevin's, who have hit top gear, awaitCount ry Colleges, whose form must be a realdisappointment to their committee-who sawthe formation of the club as the solution toproblems faced by the parent clubs. Alan Olleand Matt Byrne each will be anxious to proveto the other who has the better side. St. Kevin'shave the score on the board and they are mytip to take the points . [Come on, Colleges,do your best to prove me wrong! ]

Power House really made me eat my wordsas they turned on the heat last week . Thismay have been the form we critics have cometo expect from them . Restored to the leadingquartet Power House will be anxious to staythere. West Brunswick, "The Magpies", havehad their wings clipped over the last twoweeks . Their forwards have not been as activeas their Power House counterparts led byRick Sykes, who has made a welcome returnhome. Forwards win matches and as a result Iselect Power House to defeat West Brunswick.

SELECTIONS : Heathe rt on, Melbourne High'School Old Boys, Old Camberwell Grammarians,St. Kevin's Old Boys and Power House. -NORM NUGENT.

E SECTIO N

It appears there will be two teams and a"tipster" for relegation in "E" Section thisseason . Firstly I tried skill, then I tried guess-ing,_ and neither seems to be getting mepoints. The home ground advantage and i n

PREVIEWS (cant)some cases sloppy surfaces seemed to producethe winners, as all those at home exceptNorth Brunswick notched victories .

1 warned the Bank boys to look out forBrunswick and the warning now appearsjustified-Brunswick breaking the ice for theseason .

Beverley Hills must have had some solidkicking practice during the week after theirdefeat by A .N .Z . through bad shooting forthe big sticks, and then to come out and bethe first team to topple "St. Bedes" .

There is a change in the four : Old Geelonghave slipped from third position to fifth,Beverley Hills have moved up to third andA .M .P . have made the four.

I have just drawn the following teams outof a hat to be winners today : St. Bede's,A.N.Z. Bank, Old Geelong, Bulleen-Temple-stowe and A .M .P.- NUGGET STEPHENS .

F SECTIONNational Bank at home to Monash Whites

shouldn't get the students off the mark, whoare well in the doldrums, but not the sloughof despair . The Bankers are going to drift inand out of the four as other sides win andlose and they need a good win to lift theirpercentage.

Uni Reds and Fitites should be more of amatch as they both have possibilities . TheReds have the home ground advantage andI am inclined to give them my nod . Judgingby the performance of the Red Reserve, theclub has more players of equal standard thanthe Fitites .

Therry C .C. visit Clayton and I can't seeClayton improving their position out of this .Therry have a good side, a bit of height, abit of weight (not always in the right place)and a degree of skill that should see themsafe home .

Bulleen United will welcome the Common-wealth Bank mob. Not much between theirfacts and figures and they've played almostthe some programme so far . I'll go for thehome side as I don't think the Bankers haveseen the ground before . Should be a goodgame.

SELECTIONS : Bulleen United, Therry C.C .,Uni Reds, National Bank, Thornbury the bye .-SYD WHITFIELD.

JUNIOR SECTION 1Round 6 produced a clearer picture of the

relative strengths of the top sides .Uni . Blues overcame the previously un-

defeatd Old Scotch in a game marred; butmade closer, by the Uni . side's inaccuratekicking .

North Melbourne O .B . furthertheir premiership prospects with aover Ormond .

enhancedclear win

I'm tipping North to remain undefeated andaccount for the Blues .

Old Scotch meet St. Bernard's at home forthe first time this season I'm deserting theSaints (perhaps it will help them) and select-ing the home team which had been the modelof consistency until last Saturday .

Hampton Rovers will be full of confidencewhen facing Ormond . I believe that the"Monds" might be too strong in the finishand I'll stick with them .

Geelong play away from the delightful andscenic surrounds of their home park! Un-fortunately Geelong's form has not been goodthis season and I'm picking Uni . Blacks tobe too skilled for Geelong .

Ivanhoe vie with Monash Uni . in whichshould be a most interesting tussle . Bothteams are improvers and battle out everyissue . I fancy that Monash's high markingability will be the deciding factor in theirfavour.

SELECTIONS : North Old Boys, Old Scotch,Ormond, University Blacks, Monash University .-MICHAEL ARNOLD.

JUNIOR SECTION 2Their is some compensation in the fact that

my inability to make the correct selectionabout Kew is matched by the inability ofPeter Bruckner in picking the form of StBernard's . It was disappointing to see thatscores from both the Therry C .C .O .B . andM.H .S. Old Boys games did not make thepress.

Perhaps the only way I can "catch" Kewis to ask one of their supporters to write aparagraph on their game each week. Never-theless, I will have another go this week andpick Kew to beat Old Poradians. The schoolboys have a great home ground advantagebut they will need more than that to over-come the confidence and tenacity of the Kewplayers .

One of my informants told me that De LoSalle O.C . deserved to be beaten last week asthey had become over-confident . There wastalk about how much they could beat Kew byrather than concentrating on the task ofwinning . At home today they should makeamends and have a goad win over Fawkner.

Old Haileyburians are now sharing the leadwith De La and it is hard to imagine Therr}C.C .O.B. travelling all the way to Keysboroughfor a win . The home side must be careful, however, as the visitors need to win to keepin touch with the four .

Caulfield Grammarians were well beaten atthe hands of Coburg last week and will bekeen to make amends this week when theygo to West Brunswick . Kanis is playing wellfor'the visitors at present and should againcontribute to their winning score .

The final game sees Coburg at home toM.H .S . Old Boys. Stan Matthews has theCoburg machine moving well at present andthey should have another good win today.

SELECTIONS : Coburg, Caulfield Grammar-ians, Old Haileyburians, De La Salle, Kew .-PETER NATHAN .

Hampton Rovers had a huge win over Gee-long to boost their burgeoning confidencewhilst Ivanhoe and Monash Uni . continued ontheir winning way.

The highlight of the season to date will bethe clash between ` North O.B . and Uni . Blues .

OLD

BALL BRIEFSSCOTCH "DOUBLE" CENTUR Y

In the next couple of weeks two talentedmembers of OLD SCOTCH will reach their 100games milestone . "Legal Eagle" Andy Mouldsand "Snowman" John Nicktess have pro-gressed through the club from Juniors andhave both made their mark in Senior football .Andrew finds training difficult these days dueto the work house conditions imposed on himby his employer (Club President Leigh Mc-(3regor) . Nevertheless Andy, by dint of talentand application regularly stars in the Reserves .John, who started his days as a flighty roverand forward flanker, has progressively movedrearward and is at present fighting manfullyto stop the tide in the back pocket. Hisperformances this year in a very successfulline up do credit to his resourcefulness anddetermination .

Congratulations to both players and wehope they have many seasons left in them .

150 TO GEELONG RUCKMAN

Congratulations to Russell Coed on achiev-ing the 150 game milestone against OldBrighton Grammarians. Russell is a greatclubman, his dedication in travelling 30-oddmiles to training from his Shelford farm and60 miles to Melbourne to play sets an ex-ample to he younger players. His experienceis needed to put Geelong back in "B" Sec-tion and we hope to see him around for manymore games . Well done "Coady" .

ST . KILDA BACKMAN'S 150t h

Congratulations are extended to Chris"Hooker" Lynch on playing his 150th gamefor St . Kilda C.B .C.O.C . Chris has been withthe club since 1970, and has been a magnifi-cent player mainly in the seconds but alsowhen called upon to play in the firsts. Knownmainly as a dashing backman, "Hooker" isone of the most determined players to donthe St . Kilda jumper and has rarely beenbeaten in his consistent career. Above all heis a great team player and clubman and isa great example for all players with hiscourage and dedication .

100 AT GEELON G

Alan Trevaskis played his 100th game forGeelong against Old Carey last week . Alanplayed over 100 Junior games, was a memberof the 1972 "B" Section team, has beenvice-captain of the club and has often beenin the running for best and fairest player . Healways revels when the going's hard and isan inspiration with his guts and determina-tion . "Tracker", if those legs can keep yougoing, we would love to see you play another

ton . Good luck today . Maybe a Solomon athome .

After taking two years to play the last 10,David Ross has finally tallied 50 games .Known for his long kicking and strong voice,"Rossy" is a good clubman and if he getsthat knee right will again be a valuableplayer . He was in the 1975 State squad andall at Geelong wish him the best in hisendeavours to regain fitness and form .

CENTURY AT POWER HOUSE

Congratulations from everyone at POWE RHOUSE to WAYNE DIGBY who plays his 100thVAFA game today . Having started with theClub in the Under 17s, Wayne's versatilityhas seen him play in many positions overthe years, but it is on the halfback flankwhere his form has been outstanding thisseason . Wayne's dedication to football issuch that he rarely if ever turns in a badgame, and his strong marking and pace hasbeen continually under notice this year. Welldone, Wayne, and we hope you top off afine season with a premiership .

BANK RUCKMAN'S 100

(Today marks the 100th game of Common-wealth Bankers popular ruckman Greg Sulli-van. Since joining the bank in 1971 Greghas been plagued with injury which hasaffected his football career somewhat. Wehope to see many more games from him inthe future .

All at Commonwealth Bank congratulateNoel Keating who plays his 50th club gametoday . Since 'Keats' joined us in 1975 hehas been inspirational with his marks anddashes . It's this football ability which hasearned him the nickname of "Sweeper"which he has lived up to. Well done, Noel .

Caulfield 'Grammarians will always be proudof those players who over the years have givengreat service to the club both on the field andalso as club administrators . But they are alsoproud of the newcomers who step up eachseason to take the spaces left vacant due toretirement, transfer interstate, etc . This seasonthose who have joined the senior's ranks in-clude Bob Cameron, a key position player,Glen Hilleard a rugged ruck-rover t ype, IanHood, late sc6oi firsts, half forward, CampbellCooney, winpman and Bob Nood, rover fromHorsham, whilst up from the reserves are NellHampton, giving great service in the ruck,Greg Sassella and Jock Irvine, backmen . Thereturn of Derek Dickeson from overseas, thereinstatement as an Amateur of Geoff Cayzer,a former club Best and Fairest, added to thosejust mentioned, will we hope assist us in ourpursuit of another 'A' Section premiership pen-nant and alt, club supporters wish them weli .
