through to the Metropolitan championships held yesterday at Ringwood Pool.

The Girls 4x50m Relay finished 5th.

Taylesha finished 5th in the 50m Freestyle and 3rd in the open Breaststroke.

Chloe finished 8th in the 11 girls Backstroke and 6th in the Butterfly.

Maddie finished 4th in the 12/13 girls Breaststroke and 7th in the Butterfly.

Congratulations to all the girls on an outstanding achievement in reaching this level of

competition and swimming so well. A big thank you to Mrs. Temple, Mrs Asbury and

Mrs Shanahan for transporting and to all the parents who came to support.

School Camps

Many thanks to the parents who returned the Camp Feedback forms over the last few

weeks. At School Council it was decided that we have camps for grade 3/4 and 5/6 this

year and next with the view to whether our Camping Program becomes a biennial

event from 2019.

I am pleased to announce that our Grade 3/4 Camp will be held at Adanac CYC Camp in

Yarra Junction from 19th July-21st July.

Our Grade 5/6 Camp has now been finalised and will be held at Forest Edge, Nerrim

East from the 18th-20th September.

All details of camps and costings will be forwarded next week.

Lions Club

Every second Friday a number of Vermont Lion’s Club members are coming to WASPS

to work with a group of students to build and construct a number of projects around

the school.

This Friday will begin the installation and replacement of seating around the oval. The

students have already removed the old and rotten seats and dug the holes in

preparation for the new seats.

Other projects identified are the rejuvenation of our Veggie garden, painting free

standing wall, general gardening, new signage and more.

We thank the Vermont Lion’s Club for their continued support of our school.

STEM Program

We are so fortunate at WASPS to have joined forces with Monash Science School in

providing specialised STEM lessons for selected students on Wednesday afternoons.

Mr. David Overton from Monash Science University along with a number of science

students run exciting, challenging and thought proving activities for the children.

Car Park

We still have a number of parents still using the staff carpark for drop off and pick up.

In the interests of the safety of all of our children please do not use the staff carpark.

We also ask that all parents and students enter and exit the school via the front gates,

once again to ensure the safety of all children.

Have a great long weekend everyone.

THIS WEEK AT THE HIVE …………………

Wednesday we took advantage of the

wonderful weather again today and went

outside to play. We went to the big kids

playground and had a run around to let out all

our extra energy!

On Tuesday we got gooey in the kitchen making mars bar

slice! We all took turns with the different steps to create the

most out of this world slices. While waiting for them to be

ready we went outside and played on the playground with

most of us playing 40/40

On Monday we went outside to enjoy the wonderful weather! We had the choice of inside

with relaxing activities or outside on the little kids playground with Matilda. Gemma and

Sophia decided to stay in and worked together to create different things!

On Wednesday we’ll be getting messy in the Hive kitchen. We’ll all be taking turns

measuring out the ingredients, cutting them all into portions and mixing

everything together! I wonder what delicious treats we’ll make today!

On Monday we’ll be testing the limits of the sky! We’re making paper planes

using different coloured pieces of paper and folding and creasing all different

shapes to create our own paper planes and then we’ll be testing their flying! I wonder whose will fly the furthest?!

On Friday its kids choice day! We’ll take

a vote and see who wants to get outside

for some group games or free play, do

some cooking or get into the art room to

create something special.

On Tuesday we’ll head out to the big kids

playground to get some sun. We will play

some group games like Giants Treasure

using our team work skills to steal the

treasure before the Giant catches us!

Thursday we’re going to get outdoors, get

some Vitamin D and enjoy some of our

favourite games. We’ll play games like

Octopus and have a run around on the

big kids playground!

Come and see what’s happening in

Grade 1B

The classes in level 1 and 2 have been working on our Big Idea topic of “Brave,

Brilliant and Oh So Resilient” throughout Term One. So far, we have discussed

identifying our emotions and the various levels we can experience in each ‘feelings

family’, recognising other people’s emotions, understanding and demonstrating

empathy, right through to social problem solving. This week, our attention turned to

positive coping strategies.

It is not uncommon for children of all ages to experience frustration,

disappointment, or even anger when situations, experiences, or their own personal

efforts do not result in the outcomes they had anticipated. However, ‘positive coping’

aims to provide students with practical strategies to apply to everyday situations in

order to redirect their energies and return to a calm emotional state.

Our activity this week included a “When Something’s Bugging Me” butterfly,

where children decorated the wings with some of the positive coping strategies we

had discussed they could use when they notice that they are feeling frustrated, sad,

or anxious.

One of the most pleasing outcomes of our Big Idea topic has been when our

students have applied their new knowledge and skills in real-life settings, both within

the classroom and on the playground. It has been wonderful to hear our students

proudly discussing how they have applied their skills to ‘real-life’ situations, along

with the positive effects their new knowledge has had. We are all looking forward to

learning more about being ‘Brave, Brilliant and Oh So Resilient’ over the coming

weeks.
