4th Sunday of Easter (Cycle A) Good Shepherd Sunday A Sunday Reflection

The Fourth Sunday of Easter is commonly known as Good

Shepherd Sunday. Jesus presents himself as the Good Shepherd who leads his sheep to restful waters as found in the Gospel of John, chapter 10. Jesus our Good Shepherd still leads his people through shepherds who continue leading the flock to restful waters. Today has been designated as World Day of Prayer for Vocations. The Church needs vocations to the priesthood, permanent diaconate, and consecrated life. We need to pray for vocations in the whole Church. In Jeremiah 3:15 the Lord promised that he will give us shepherds according to His own heart, who will shepherd us wisely and prudently. Let’s us ask the Lord of the harvest to send workers to his vineyard. God bless you!

Fr. Luis

Incense

GOD CREATED US AS A UNITY of body and soul, and we return

ourselves entirely to him in worship….Thus, the Church’s worship

engages all that we are, including our bodily and spiritual senses. In

the liturgy… we hear it, see it, feel it, taste, and smell it as well. We

ring bells to herald the Lord’s appearance. We burn fragrant incense

before his altar. Incense became the most emblematic form of worship….[O]nce

dropped into a thurible with hot coals, [incense] rises heavenward as

fragrant smoke. It’s meant to be an outward sign of the inner

mystery that is true prayer. Incense belongs with worship. It is not necessary, but it is beautiful

and expressive and worthy of divine worship. God prescribed it in

the [Old Testament] Law, not for his sake, but for ours, so that we

might see, through this sign, the beauty of worship.

Scott Hahn, Signs of Life (New York: Doubleday, 2009) Pages 157, 159 and 160. Used with permission

Incienso

BLESSED TITUS BRANDSMA Born in the Netherlands

in 1881, he was ordained a Carmelite priest at the

age of 24, earned a doctorate in philosophy, and

went on to teach philosophy and the history of

mysticism. Appointed advisor to the Catholic

journalists in the Netherlands in 1935, Brandsma was

known as an opponent to the German Nazi

occupiers. During a tour of visits with every Catholic

newspaper in the country, during which he was

instructing writers and editors to adhere to Church

teaching, the Nazis arrested Brandsma and

imprisoned him in the Dachau concentration camp.

Frail and sickly much of his life, Brandsma was

executed at Dachau in July, 1942.

The Pope Speaks / Habla el Papa

Now, at the conclusion of this Jubilee, it is time to look

to the future and to understand how best to continue,

with joy, fidelity and enthusiasm, experiencing the richness of divine mercy. Our communities can remain alive and active in the work of the new evangelization in the measure that the “pastoral conversion” to which we are called will be shaped daily by the renewing force of mercy. Let us not limit its action; let us not sadden the Spirit, who constantly points out new paths to take in bringing to everyone the Gospel of salvation.

Pope Francis

Papa Francisco

BOOK NOOK Recommendation for this week:

“Who Am I to Judge?” Responding to Relativism with Logic and Love, by Edward Sri, Ignatius, $16.95 Borrowing from Pope Francis’ famous quote, Professor Sri, of the Augustine Institute (of which our formation program FORMED is part) makes a case against relativism and reminds us that judging actions is not the same as judging a person’s soul.
