4. Reflect This requires a place of solitude.

— Reflect deeply on the audits

• What answers stands out the most?

• What are the patterns you are noticing?

—Go back and review any inspriations or parts of this brief

5. Formulate a concept for your self portratis.

—Think beyond the obvious.

—Consider archetypal symbols.

—Consider how every visual aspect of your final image ties into your concept.

+PROCESS1. GET INSPIRED

Find at least 3 more sources of inspiration--consider: more artists / designers / writers/ film makers and so on

+ Bruce Nauman (filming regular events, horses, stairs)Doesn’t think about large audiences, thinks “if someone came to my house, who would that be? who would want to look at this?”“You have to kind of not watch anything, but be aware of everything.”Doesn’t do work that requires repetitive activity, finds the most efficient way of doing things. Subverting the function, appears to be functional but isn’t.

+ Kerry James Marshall (black people, homes, drawings)How home is impenetrable to people who aren’t on the inside. Is what is going on in people’s houses what we expect to be there?’Images of Dignity by Charles WhiteEvidence of the artist’s thinking, evidence of the artist’s process. Always looking to other sources to see how your works can be organized better.

+ Maya Lin (sculpture park, Langston Hughes Library, Viet Nam MemorialSculptures deal with naturally occurring phenomenon.

+ Louise Bourgeois (Jane Addams Memorial Park, hand sculptures

2. EXTERNAL AUDIT

How do they SEE you? What 5 words would they use to describe you? Why? What memories do they have of YOU to support these words?

+ Allicon Cox: Honest, Laid Back, Light Hearted, Loquacious, Insouciant, Cheerful, Thoughtful

+ Mom: Smart (grades), Calm in emergency situations (held brother’s blood in hands while sister freaked out), Pretty (look in the mirror), Laid Back (if someone is having an argument, you always try to just stay out)

+ Kyshel Tew (best friend): Flirty, Funny, Crazy, Hard Working (always kept a job and been dedicated to your school work)

3. INTERNAL AUDIT

What are you inclined to notice that most others do not?+ I feel like I’ve always been able to find the positive side of situations, instead of stressing out, I am very capable of looking at things from a different point of view.

What do you most value in life?+ Spending time with my friends and family

What drives you nuts?+ Liars, mouth noises

+ 451 P

ortrait

Page 11: 451 Process Book

+ 11

What types of situations bring out the worst in you?+ When people lie, or say they will do something and then don’t, What are your biggest fears?+ Being alone, spiders

What comes naturally to you? What are your biggest strengths?+ I can talk to just about anyone. Also, I am very good at staying calm in stressful situations.

What part of yourself have you wanted to let go of – but you have never been able to? + I wish I could get along better with my mom, but I’ve never been able to. No matter how hard I try. I also have a very hard time talking about my feelings, I’ve never really been able to do it easily.

What are your favorite tv shows or books or movies. Is there a pattern?+ My favorite books are Bridge to Terabithia and Memoirs of a Geisha. My favorite movies are Secret Window and Signs. There isn’t really much in common between any of them except for a mystery aspect in both movies.

When have you been at your most vulnerable?+ I feel the most vulnerable when talking about my feelings. I don’t like to let me guard down very often and I feel like that leads me to over compensate in my personality. I feel the need to be loud and opinionated and I don’t really care what people think, I’ll do what I want, but when it comes to talking about how I feel, I feel like I just retreat into myself and shut it all up.

We were required to take two photographs for this project. One had to be an actual self portrait and the second could be anything that represented us. I went through a lot of ideas before ending on the last two images. The self portrait shows the contrast between my quiet self, hiding my feelings, and my clinched fists showing the tougher side of me. The taped megaphone shows how sometimes I want to talk about things but instead, I shut myself off and don’t talk about it.

+ 15This was my first version of spreads for class. We were required to tell some kind of narrative or story about ourselves/culture. I decided to make my spreads look like a text conversation because that is pretty much the only format in which I can openly talk about my feelings. I also thought that would relate well to the culture part of the assignment, because or generation relys so much on technology. However, the class ended up being uninterested for that reason.

Q: Why do you think it’s so hard for you to talk to people about those kinds of things?

A: I’m not really sure why it’s so hard. If I’m writing it down, by hand or texting or anything like that, I can get it out just fine. For some reason I just can’t ever say it.

Q: How were things in your family growing up? Were your parents open with you?

A: I can’t really remember specifically if they were when I was young but I remember starting in middle school when they argued. All. The. Time. About everything. It seemed like they couldn’t ever just talk about something, they had to yell. It was like that all through high school as well. My junior year, my dad even moved in to our guest room and pretty much just stayed in there all the time. He never ate meals with the rest of us and the only time my he and my mother spoke was to argue about something. Speaking is probably an under-statement, it was more like screaming. Finally, during my senior year of high school, they got a divorce and my dad moved out.

Q: So you think that probably has something to do with the way you handle problems in your adult life?

A: Yeah, I think it does. And honestly, that wasn’t something I realized until really recently.

Q: Do you think your parents know they affected you that much?

A: I really don’t think they even know. And just like any other time, it’s something I don’t want to bring up. I don’t want to talk about it.

Q: Is it only with your parents that you don’t want to talk about it?

A: No, not really. It doesn’t really matter who it is. It could be my mom, my best friend or my boy-friend. I just hate talking about anything serious, which obviously includes my feelings.

Q: It seems like you can talk about them pretty easily right now.

A: Well I’ve been trying recently to change.

Q: Why recently? Did something happen?

A: Well yes, but it started after my dad moved out. Once I saw my parents with their new spous-es, how they treated each other so differently, it helped. Now when I see either of them with their significant others, they are so much happier, not arguing, but talking things out. I think seeing this change in both of my parents has helped me realize that I, too, need to change. But on a more recent note, my boyfriend and I broke up this summer after a serious lack of communication.

So it’s always been really hard for me to talk about my feelings.

Anything serious really.

+MANIFESTOYou only live once. As cliché as it is, it’s pretty much my life motto. I live in the present and don’t like to think twice about things. Why put off something until later in life, when you can do it now? Often I jump in a little further than I should. But that’s what makes life interesting. I like to keep it interesting. Life isn’t worth living unless you take chances.

If you always do what you’ve always done, then you’ll always get what you’ve always gotten. A phrase ever present on my mother’s fridge. It always reminds me of how much I hate routine. In my life, I’ve always had a fear of falling into a monotonous, predictable routine. I will not be stuck in the same rut my whole life.

Love your past and love your present. Don’t be ashamed of what you’ve had, and don’t be sad because you have it no longer. It is important to love your past, but not to worry about it, don’t regret it. Learn from your mistakes and move on. Don’t let yesterday fill up today, because if you dwell too long on the past, you might miss the future.

Don’t take yourself too seriously. I think it’s important not to. Taking yourself too seriously is a waste of precious time. Happy people are those who can allow themselves to be free. And others are attracted to that freedom of character.

After finding the required 100 logos, I printed them and cut them all apart. I separated them into groups according to different aspects. The groups I came up with are: Animals, Buildings, Foods, Geometric Shapes, Globes, Hands, Hearts, Heraldry, Mountains, People, Letters, Swirls, Smiley Faces, Stars, Plants and Text.

Because I was making a timeline for each logo, I decided to make an accordian book because I felt that format fit the content. The front of the book has the histories and timelines, while the back has my personal analysis of each logo.

Blackbird Coeehouse

Blackbird Coeehouse is located in the heart of Sequoyah Hills. ey create a warm and friendly atmosphere for you to enjoy the simple pleasures in life. ey proudly serve: freshly-roasted fair trade/organic coees & espresso (by Mattie's Mountain Mud), smoothies, breakfast sandwiches, pastries, wraps and soups.

1210 Kennesaw Avenue | Knoxville, TN 37919 (West)

Location: I love the fact that this shop is nestled back in a quiet neighborhood. And it’s much closer for West Knoxvillians than downtown coee shops e Golden Roast and Old City Java, among others.

Ambiance: e interior is small, but cozy. ere are three tables (two inside and one outside) and a couch. e music choices are a mix of indie rock and alt country. I’m sure they’d be open to requests.Blackbird Coeehouse also oers free wireless Internet access for customers.

Coee: I tried the house blend called Blackbird House Blend, and found it very tasty. e shop currently serves this option in addition to an Italian (Appalachian Smoke) and decaf (Shade Tree).ey make all of the usual mixed drinks such as lattes, and sell whole beans from Mattie’s Mountain Mud Coee in half pound and pound bags.

Food: Blackbird Coeehouse serves a variety of food including: cupcakes from Cities Cupcakes, bagels from Hot Bagel in Oakridge, muns, cookies, cinnamon rolls and breakfast sandwiches. ey also serve several lunch sandwiches.

A Florida original, Barnie’s Coee & Tea Company® was founded in 1980 near Orlando. Our rst store opened our doors in the Park Avenue district of Winter Park with a clear purpose: share the best coee and tea from around the world with our neighbors and friends. Today, we remain Florida’s signature coee company and oer an extraordinary assortment of more than 50 hand-selected estate, cra blended, avored and decaeinated coees and tea. Many of our coee beans are also harvested from rare crops and are sustainable: we proudly oer a selection of Fair Trade, USDA Organic and Rainforest Alliance certied products. Our coee buyer partners with growers throughout the world to bring these carefully sourced beans to market within our stores and online. She skillfully roasts, and then taste-tests at the cupping table, each green varietal to determine the roast level that showcases each coee’s most distinct avor characteristics. Once she determines what the best roast style is, she works with our roasters to assure that these inspired taste proles are highlighted whether the coee is roasted here in Orlando or at one of our partner facilities. Every batch is cupped for freshness and avor before it reaches our sales outlets, so you know that whether our coee is brewed for you in one of our stores or you prepare it in your own kitchen it will be at its most avorful. Barnie’s is privately owned and, in addition to coee and tea products, our stores also feature an array of fresh gourmet foods. Under the leadership of President/CEO Jonathan Smiga, the company is committed to the nest in products and customer service. Barnie’s has ve company-owned and three franchised Central Florida locations. Our headquarters are located at 2126 West Landstreet Road, Orlando, FL 32809.

I began searching for a typeface that would fit my brand. This proved to be the most time consuming portion of my research. As the symbol I was creating morphed into the final form, I continued searching for the right typeface. These are a few I started looking at. The following pages show all of the changes my logo went through from start to finish. These include color, size, typeface, and even the company name.

The Cool KidsMarch 1910pm - 12pm

The Cool Kids, although a fairly new band to the music industry, has a long history within its members. Alan and Logan, childhood friends from Knoxville, TN always had an interest and passion for creating music. The four have been performing and winning over fans for only a short time now but have the passion and talent that will take them far within the music industry

At this point in the project, my professor suggested that I change the name of my brand to Bands and Beans. I then began the process of changing the brand. Because of the change in name, the feeling of the brand also changed. These are the reworkings of my logo, logo text, stationary systems and applications. (A few of my last pieces are not included in this book because of printing time.)

A visiting designer told me that as a designer, it is very important to consider our websites on different formats. Because of this comment, I decided to consider what my website would look like as an iPhone app, and possibly an iPad app.
