Community Foundation Fund.

Last year Quartet awarded grants worth over £2.87 million across the West of England - including in Bath & North East Somerset - to local charities and community groups. We work closely with donors and Fund holders, to understand the causes closest to their hearts and aims and – using Quartet’s knowledge of the needs and aspirations of local communities – to match their concerns and interests with local projects.

Over £3 million in grants have been distributed to projects in Bath & North East Somerset since 2003. A grant to Bath Ethnic Minority Senior Citizens’ Association (BEMSCA) funded a community quilting Project, helping the Elders by stimulating memories of their past and enabling the sharing of experiences.

Quartet has been celebrating its 30th anniversary throughout 2017 and have cumulatively awarded over £43million to projects across the West of England, projects which change lives for the better and aim to give as many people as possible the chance to fulfil their potential.

We can only do what we do thanks to the generosity and commitment of companies, organisations, individuals, families and charitable trusts who have either set up funds with Quartet or who have left a legacy in their will. Local Funds include the Bath Half Marathon Fund, the Cullum Family Fund, the Future Publishing Fund, The Lions of Bath Fund, and the fund which the Bath Percent Club is building.

Supporting communities in Bath & North East Somerset

“For many local community groups and charities, a small amount of money can make all the difference”

says Claire Wynne Hughes, Philanthropy Executive for Bath & North East Somerset for Quartet Community Foundation. A grant of £800 helped fund WiFi and new notice boards for the Peasedown St John Residents’ Association, providing more opportunities for the local community.

Ian and Hannah took over The Framing Workshop in September 2015 having both worked with Martin Tracy for 23 years (Ian) and 5 years (Hannah). They love working in the framing industry and being in Bath. Ian has spent most of his working life in framing and has built up a huge amount of expertise and skills. He is a true artisan and craftsman. “I like a challenge” he says, “Something which can appear to be unusual and potentially a bit difficult, when you look at it can be a really interesting job. Sometimes it’s a bit like a puzzle.”

The Framing Workshop do not only frame pictures - far from it. The range of what goes into a frame is vast. Very small - a grain of rice; very large - fabric banners for museums; and everything in between, each job has it’s own charm and interest, be it the image or object itself or the story that goes with it. “I love hearing people’s stories” says Hannah, “It makes every day different and you get such a sense of our rich and wonderful history and the individuals, the different characters who make up this great tapestry of life. I grew up in Bath, and it is such a unique, vibrant place. The number of independent shops definitely contributes to the unique vibe. Independents bring so much personality to the high street. Person to person - isn’t that what life is about?!”

“We have both been fortunate in working at The Framing Workshop previously under Martin Tracy, a company which values it’s staff and has made a positive contribution to the community. Now that we are calling the shots, as it were, we will definitely be continuing that legacy. To share our blessings and provide help to those who need it where we can is important to us.”.

The Framing Workshop sponsored the auctioneer for the evening at The Percent Club Art Auction on 20th November at 44AD art space A performer from The Natural Theatre Company encouraged patrons, boosting bids for the art works on display.

“The Arts are so core to a community. In many different forms. It enriches people’s lives in

so many ways, physically, mentally and spiritually - and it’s fun!” says Hannah who has a background

in Fine Art, Art History and Art Teaching. “We will definitely be getting involved in more arts based

community projects as we get into the swing of things. We are excited to be involved in

The Percent Club and it’s fantastic contributions to the community.”

The Framing Workshop, on Walcot Street, has long been known for it’s outward looking ethos. Ian Pittman, a framer with nearly 30 years experience, and his wife Hannah, the new proprietors of The Framing Workshop, intend to continue this approach to running their business.

VALERIE PIRLOTValérie Pirlot is a Belgian oil painter born in 1982. Valérie works ‘En plein air’ encourages spontaneity and keeps the work fresh, avoiding the mistake of overworking and adding unnecessary details. There is hardly time to consider things in a conscious way - it is an instinctive and spontaneous way of painting, reacting to the changing weather and light which often produces unforeseen results. It is all about capturing the “essence” of a place in a few brushstrokes, but making every single one count.

As proud members of the Bath Percent Club we committed to donating 2% of our annual profits to a local charity this year. There were so many fantastic causes to choose from

including Jamie’s Farm, the Great Western Air Ambulance and the Wellow Group who are part of The Riding for the Disabled Association in the UK. Our staff ultimately chose to donate

the monies to Julian House, which we hope will go a long way to helping the homeless in our community, and we look forward to donating to many more local charities in the future.
