ALICE IS UNCHAINEDAlice In Chains have announced a May 2013 release for their highly anticipated new album The Devil Put Dinosaurs Here. The first single ‘Hollow’ stealing the top spot on Mainstream Rock radio chart and closing in on No. 1 on the Active Rock radio chart in America.
The band posted the lyric clip on their official site back on Dec 18 and it quickly went viral. Rather than wait to receive an official edited track from the record company, stations played the almost-six-minute-long version of ‘Hollow’ in its entirety.
COLOSSAL COMEDYMr and Mrs Darby (aka Rhys and Rosie) are bringing comedy to town. The pair have announced upcoming comedy shows including 2013 Billy T Nominee Eli Matthewson, one of the thought-provoking comedian’s working today Steve Hughes, the man with the sideburns, the glasses and the microphone Jared Christmas and the originators of casio rap Hedluv + Passman. All doing their own shows during the comedy festival this year and are all bound to put you in stiches.

HIGH TIMESAfter the demise of Kyuss, vocalist, and founding member, John Garcia went forth and delivered. From the ashes of the short lived project Slo Burn, John Garcia, along with Arthur Seay and Mike Canino, put together what was to become the next installment in John Garcia’s musical legacy, and that band was Unida! For the first time ever, Unida will be touring New Zealand this May.

MORE WINE THAN IRONAmerican singer/songwriter Sam Beam aka Iron and Wine is set to release his fifth studio album Ghost on Ghost following his 2011 album Kiss Each Other Clean, which topped it at number two on the US Billboard chart and was also praised by Rolling Stone as the album that “pop music hadn’t seen anything like it since the heyday of Cat Stevens.” Beam also puts his skills as a visual artist to test designing and choosing the image from the series Private Views by noted photographer Barbara Crane for the new album. Ghost on Ghost will be released Fri 12 Apr.
WARRIOR ARTIST Ralph Hotere has died aged 81. Hotere was a painter, sculptor and collaborative artist and was regarded as one of New Zealand’s most important contemporary artists.
“We have lost one of our greatest artists there is no doubt about that, but we haven’t lost his work. Great people are great not because of who they are but what they do.” explained art commentator and curator Hamish Keith.
HEATWAVEThe sold out Sydney Soundwave Festival wasn’t all smooth sailing yesterday with reports that a female was seriously burnt by a burning piece of stage rigging after a flare was lit in the mosh pit during band Bring Me The Horizon’s set. Festival promoter AJ Maddah took to twitter blasting the person responsible for lighting the flare. Police are investigating the incident and the person responsible for lighting the flare has not yet been identified. The popular Australian festival is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year.
BETH ORTONBritish folk singer Beth Orton returns to New Zealand this May for shows in two of New Zealand’s most beautiful churches. Orton’s delicate folk songs will be the perfect match for such intimate and special venues.

The speculation is over – Sony have announced their next-generation console: the PlayStation 4. “Our vision for the future is consumer-centric, developer-inspired, and characterized by an unwavering commitment to phenomenal play experiences. Today we are revealing the genesis of an expanding ‘idea’ about the future of play – an idea with enough potential to satisfy the insatiable appetites of our creative community of developers and gamers,” president and group CEO Andrew House explained.
Unlike like its predecessors no images were shown of the console itself, but the new controller was presented. This is called the DualShock 4. With it’s slightly revised design including a touch pad which supports 2-point multitouch and is also clickable as an extra button, a “share” button which by pressing this allows you to leverage a number of socially connected services, a built-in speaker and stereo headset jack and the PlayStation 4 Eye dual-lens camera that supports video capture at a maximum resolution of 1280x800.
Sony are also specifically supporting iOS devices with the new PlayStation App, as well as the customary (for Sony) “open” Android platform. “Once installed on these devices, users can, for example, see maps on their second screens when playing an adventure game, purchase PS4 games while away from home and download it directly to the console at home, or remotely watch other gamers playing on their devices,” according to a Sony press release.
The CPU is an 8-core (most PCs today have 2 or 4 cores) X86 processor and the system memory was confirmed as 8GB (32 x the memory of the PS3). It’s also GDDR5 – in hardcore technical terms, the bandwidth of this memory is 176GB/second.
The PS4 allows a number of devices to work as what Sony are referring to as “Second Screens.” Rather than being limited to just one controller, like the Wii U, the PS4 purportedly allows many devices to work in this way, including smartphones, tablets, and the PlayStation Vita.

If you weren’t a musician, what would you be? Because I am a musician I have often had to be many other things to support myself. I have been a tour guide for Taiwanese language students, a maker of hot drinks (barista), library assistant, a gatekeeper, dogwalker, childsitter. Most of my time outside music has been spent as a print journalist, publicist and television documentary researcher.
Who would play you in a film? Léa Seydoux with a kiwi accent. She has a diastema (gap in her front teeth), which is essential.
How do you discover new music? Recently, a plethora of online radio stations and generally trawling the Internet. Also, I rely on my friends with good taste. BUT I really miss spending whole days in record shops listening to albums. (We have only one secondhand record shop where I currently live, New Plymouth, which is excellent by the way).
Worst job you’ve had? It wasn’t so much the job, but the person I worked for. He used to pick his ears and leave earwax on the documents he’d give me. He picked his nose when typing and sneezed all over the computer screen we sometimes shared. I’m not usually squeamish, but this really made me gag.
Which song do you wish you wrote? Happy Birthday. Excellent royalties.
First gig in attendance? The Cure, in 1992? I was 15 and my parents drove my best friend and I from New Plymouth to Auckland to see the show. Jan Hellriegel was supporting with my now drummer/producer/mate Wayne Bell in the line up.
Plug whatever you have coming up... I have been so lucky to work with a group of exceptionally clever musicians over the last few years, many of whom are coming to join me for the gig on the 9th. We will play a mix of material, some of mine, some of theirs. It is really a very good excuse to have a party and listen to some fantastic music so please come and join us!

Technology Sony acquired when they purchased the game-streaming company Gaikai will be used in a number of ways, one being “Backwards compatibility.” PS1, PS2, and PS3 games will be playable on a “wide variety” of devices, including smartphones, tablets, the Vita, and the PS4, thanks to Internet-streaming.
The Blu-Ray drive will be a 6X unit - three times faster than the 2X version in the PlayStation 3 and users will be able to link their PlayStation Network and Facebook accounts, and the system supports cross-game chat.
The price is yet to be mentioned, but rumors suggest something around the $400USD mark. The exact release date is also to be confirmed. At this stage, all Sony have said is “Holiday 2013.”

Once a leading man of Boyzone, not to mention The X Factor mentor, Ronan Keating will win over your hearts once again like he did in the ‘90s with that iconic song ‘Say Nothing At All’. He’s also joined by ex-Westlife member Brian McFadden and our own Jamie McDell.
Continuing the Auckland City Council’s free summer shows, chart-toppers Avalanche City join Jesse Sheehan and Xuri Xrux (yes, like Tom Cruise’s daughter) in Kingsland. Avalanche City is the perfect band to sail away with on a cloud of happiness, with lead singer Dave Baxter’s whimsical vocals.
Who’s got the Blues? We do, for Dictaphone Blues – a band that performs the songs penned by Edward Castelow. The band also consists of former Heavy Jones members, Myles Allpress, and Rob Collins, becoming stuff of legend and lore with performances being heralded as “infectious”, “joyous” and “quivering”.
The punky, upbeat rockers are still sticking it to the man well into their thirties. Same attitude, same spikey blonde hair, not much has changed – they are still pumping out obnoxious, addictive tunes. Don’t forget to sing along to ‘Pretty Fly’… we know you know all the words.
Bobby V released his first album in 2005 distributed through Island Def Jam titled Bobby Valentino, with the hit single ‘Slow Down’ becoming the number-one hit R&B single on the Billboard Hot 100. This smooth talker is bringing a class of R&B that has not been seen on the shores of New Zealand before.
Triple-threat big noise bands Swampland, Bat Country and Billy the Mountain will liven up your night. Billy is exactly what you image – a dude with a history and a chip on his shoulder. Swampland will get you moving and Bat Country twosome Nina McSweeney and Brendan Turner have the harmonica stompbox on.
Evan Short – of Cobra Khan and Subtract fame – is a busy man. Leaving Concord Dawn behind long ago for different pastures, the engineer/producer/musical mastermind has a few tricks up his sleeve and depending on if he’s wearing sleeves, will pull them out at the new Ding Dong Lounge.
Don’t be fooled by the band title – they are some kind of hippy, space worshippers. Well, sort of. Moon Duo is psychedelic Wooden Shjips guitarist Ripley Johnson and Sanae Yamada. They perform their first New Zealand shows this March, on the back of their latest and second album Circles.
No need to step into your DeLorean to find top-quality DJs. Britain’s fast-talking dance floor filler Dizzee Rascal is headlining this outstanding show, alongside ‘It’ girl Azealia Banks, Dutch house DJ Hardwell, Madeon, Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike and A-Trak.
A leading-edge, multimedia art collective blurring the lines between art, music, fashion, new media technologies and performance. Everything is highly experimental and extreme out of the world, but it’s a work of art which treads territory yet to be charted and blurs boundaries.

Just two words sum up Nick Cave’s latest: Understated and magnificent. Slightly-fucking brilliant would also do at a push.
It’s been 5 years since Cave and his Bad Seeds released their last studio LP: 2008’s Dig, Lazarus, Dig!!! That album embraced a fire, which had set in Nick’s bones (Note the triple-threat exclamation marks), one continued from his Grinderman project with co-conspirator and Bad Seed, Warren Ellis.
On Push The Sky Away it’s almost like the fire has gutted out and all that’s left is ashes and memory.
But there is more.
Out of the soot comes a world-weary Cave, one with an eye to a world which has stripped away his youth.
To be honest, he’s a fairly creepy soul in this incarnation. Prone to voyeurism and rambling thought, all delivered with that intensity he drawls everything in. Just imagine him ordering a kebab at 4 in the morning. Imagine it.
He sings about watching young lovers with intense scrutiny, the cycle of life in a questionable, Higgs Boson world, and Hannah Montana. Yes, Hannah Montana.
Push The Sky Away covers a lot of ground in a fairly short period (It clocks in at just over forty minutes). But for all that unspooling of Cave’s mind, things never feel rushed. If anything, an added 20 minutes or so might just be 20 minutes too much. The material is almost universally magnetic, if slightly disjointed at
times. But still stuffed-full of wistful charisma.
There are a few neat tricks as well. On track, ‘Jubilee Street,’ Cave begins on one of those rambling journeys of his and then fades out. The next two tracks play, then we return to ‘Finishing Jubilee Street’ where Cave declares he’s “Just finished writing Jubilee Street, then I lay down on my bed and fell into a deep sleep.” From there, the track plays out in a dream-like fashion that neatly wraps the reality and song in one tidy little end game. See what he did there?
Other highlights include a very creepy and intense, ‘Waters Edge,’ as well as ‘The Higgs Boson Blues,’ where Hannah Montana scores some props from Mr Cave. Along with Miley Cyrus. Yes, Miley Cyrus.
And although Cave dominates so much of this album, Warren Ellis is an equally essential element - as those Bad Seeds remain the best partnership that Cave could ever wish for. Even without the talents of Mick Harvey.

This staple summer show has become an iconic event since its inception seven years ago. This year’s headline act is Fat Freddy’s Drop, joined by the sensational Anika (Moa), Boh (Runga) & Hollie (Smith) collaboration, and to top it off is The Adults, featuring Jon Toogood, Julia Deans and Shayne Carter.
Blistering US alt-rock influencers Dinosaur Jr are coming to New Zealand for one show. Fans can expect to witness J Mascis, Lou Barlow and Murph tearing through favourites from career defining albums such as Dinosaur, You’re Living All Over Me, Bug, Green Mind and Where You Been. Whew, what a fair few to get through.
This stellar event pairs the spectacular Wellington International Ukulele Orchestra with “the best ukulele soloist in the world” James Hill in a summer double bill of “small guitar” magic. Look out for ‘Somewhere Over the Rainbow’ – no doubt it will come out at some point in the night and is always a “lighters in the air” inducing hit.
Get ready for the musical hysteria as the boys bring their freaked-out live show back. Last here in January 2011, following a reissue campaign that saw much of their unavailable catalogue brought to light once more, JSBX blew the roof off venues all over Australasia playing their classic album Orange in its entirety.

Who’s in the dead supergroup for your dream hologram show? Well if they have to be dead, then the logical choice would be The Ramones with Janis Joplin charging on stage and singing a duet or two with Joey, then perhaps Django Reinhardt idling on for a guitar solo and Andy Kaufman on maracas.

It might not be wise to challenge the almighty Twilight in a game of Rock, Paper, Sparkle. But with the conclusion of that saga behind us (supposedly), the young adult fantasy romance genre is ripe for the taking. Beautiful Creatures steps onto the stage and gives a bold performance, but ends up bowing its head down and shuffling into the wings alongside I Am Number Four.
Ambitious teen Ethan (Alden Ehrenreich) wants to escape a life destined for blandness – shown in an awesomely creepy scene where he’s forced to forecast his entire life in a minute. His desire for the extraordinary draws him to Lena (Alice Englert), a ‘caster’ with supernatural abilities.
The always-reliable Jeremy Irons is great as Lena’s protective uncle, though he tends to forget that he has a Southern accent. Emma Thompson holds a more natural Texan twang, but brings a big plate of ham to her
performance. However, it’s the fresh-faced leads that liven the film up. What Ehrenreich lacks in facial features he makes up for heavily in charisma while Englert plays off his fascination. Between the outcast seeking normality and the ‘average Joe’ seeking abnormality, the relationship carries an infectious dynamic that brims with personality.
Unfortunately, the elusive world of ‘casters’ isn’t all that wondrous. There is no Hogwarts castle to be in awe of and the weird Lazy Susan dinner-table whirlwind battle scene doesn’t come close to dethroning The Craft for best witch-vs-witch battle. It’s a damn shame Beautiful Creatures fumbles with its own fantasy lore, for it presents a young romantic couple worth caring about; a quality it has over its predecessors.

Famous for making people drink seamen and eating all kind of animal testicles, the Wildfoods Festival is an experience beyond the “food”. The Hokitika Wild Food Festival is an annual event held in Hokitika, New Zealand. The main attraction of the event is food stalls offering items not normally consumed on a regular basis. Celebrating the wild food and drink of the West Coast, and the culinary creativity and originality of the locals, this unique event is unlike any other. The festival programme includes live entertainment, cooking demonstrations, a photography competition and prizes for the best-dressed festival-goers.
You don’t have to have a strong stomach and you don’t need to be totally bonkers, but you do need to have a sense of adventure and be willing to try something new. There is also huhu grubs and possum pies for those who walk a little bit on the less wild side, but for those wanting to push themselves, there will always be something out of left field – most likely eyeballs and any other organ you can think of. The event also encourages silly dress up (mandatory) and there are even prizes for those who look the best in their dressed up wares. This is an event not to be missed and one that is frequently put on the bucket list!

What’s the ethos of your jewerly line? Young Pilgrims is about providing handmade jewelry that’s unique, on trend, and accessible for any kind of budget.
Which historical figure had some wicked style? Jackie Kennedy. I don’t know if I’d describe her style as ‘wicked’ exactly, but she was always understated and classy – something you don’t see much of these days.
What muso/celebrity has style up the wazoo? Chloë Sevigny is a goddess – she could wear a paper bag and it would be cool as hell. Probably the only woman to pull off a shaved patch since 2010.
society’s biggest fashion faux pas? Puffer jackets and shorts. If you’re cold enough to wear a puffer jacket, you should probably put some pants on.
What’s the must-have look this season? This summer seems to be all about the nostalgia- bold, quirky prints, crop tops and jelly sandals. I have to admit I’m a firm believer in all three and you can’t go wrong with at least a few of each in your wardrobe. In jewelry terms, the boho ring look is making a huge comeback- mixing up stackers, stones, gold and silver is where it’s at.
Colours/patterns big this season? Neon seem to have made a huge impression this summer, although I have to admit I’m not a fan- and after travelling overseas this past summer it seems like the neon fad was a short lived one (hallelujah).
What are the essentials for a man’s wardrobe? A baggy white tee and a well fitting pair of jeans is all a man ever really needs in my opinion.
What are the essentials for a lady’s wardrobe? Accessories are always the most important things in a woman’s wardrobe – you could wear the same clothes every day but having the right accessories can really transform your look. A few chunky rings, a pair of wedges, brogues, sandals and a good mix of clutches/handbags and you’re good to go for pretty much any occasion.
Everyone should own at least one good… Pair of shoes. Come on people, leave the sneans to your mum and dad – you can do better than that.
hyphenate three words to describe your style: Cute-as-hell (hey, if I don’t toot my own horn, no one else will).

AzeAliA BAnks hAs recently burst into the music scene making huge waves with her sound existing at the juncture of sweet and sour. she is exactly what the music scene needs, irreverence combined with musical sophistication.
Banks is not just another harlem born rap star singing the same old tune about life in the ghetto. Although this is where her roots are, she grew up in a reasonably wealthy family raised by her single mother. still no stranger to the violence and pain present in harlem life, she claims she experienced “a healthy juxtaposition of good and bad.”
her artistic ability and flair for performance were recognised at an early age and she spent majority of her education in performing arts centres. she scored starring roles in off-Broadway at a young age and also tried her hand at the TV game but found the rejection and environment disheartening. luckily for us she decided to pursue a career in music.
in the beginning Banks featured on other artists music. she had a credited feature on Major lazer’s ‘Can’t stop now’ and also collaborated with Diplo where she sang ladytron’s ‘seventeen’ alongside a sample of the original track. she also lived in Montreal where she released the well-received track ‘l&R’ and a cover of interpol’s ‘slow hands’. 2012 also saw the release of her mixtape titled Fantasea, which was much loved by fans.
her success started to get really serious when she dropped ‘212’ in 2011. now, the track has gone viral. it can be heard everywhere and everyone is talking about it. The video is a mammoth sensation reaching over 45 million views on YouTube. she has been recognised officially by numerous musical outlets, most notably receiving third place in the BBC sounds of 2012 list. The incredible profanity in her lyrics has made it difficult for her to achieve chart success but the reputable music critics that have given her praise more than make up for this. nMe has placed her at the top of their ‘Cool list’, while Pitchfork has admired her “details and decisions that suggest a scary degree of pop talent”.
Remarkably at just 21 years old Banks has created ‘212’ which is a work of musical art complete with a badass video clip to boot. Banks fuses controversy and complexity in a way that is absolutely divine.
her use of a very explicit vocabulary is excused by her femininity and charm. it is as though she has peaked at the exact point between juvenile and mature where her profanity can be cheekily smiled away. The video is well worth a look.
Banks comes across as an interesting woman whom it is clear enjoys experimenting with characters and alter egos. she started out with the stage name Miss Bank$ and used this for all her early work with Major lazor. she switched to B.A.n.k.s. briefly before transforming into Yung Rapunxel when Fantasea was released. interestingly Banks has also collaborated with M.A.C. to produce a plum coloured lipstick named Yung Rapunxel to accentuate this particular alias. she has described Yung Rapunxel as “not even trying to be unique and different. she literally just lives in her head; she does what she wants to do. The lipstick is here for someone who is happy to be themselves”. After so many pseudonyms it is curious that she has now settled on her birth name.
This weekend the controversial rapper will feature at the Back To The Future Festival alongside Dizzee Rascal and other big hip-hop/dance names. This will be her first ever visit to new zealand and it is likely to be a fantastic performance. As she is already one of the most talked about artists in the urban scene this show is sure to build hype for her upcoming full-length album Broke With Expensive Taste. This is produced by Paul epworth (Florence & The Machine) so is sure to please those who are fascinated by her ability to cross and mix the boundaries between hip-hop and alternative music. Banks’ powerful attitude and feminine prowess are sure to come to light on stage guaranteeing this show to a highlight of 2013.

The Uk’s Dizzee RAsCAl will be headlining one top-notch rave night at the Vector Arena this Friday night along with UsA rapper Azealia Banks, and hardwell, Madeon, Dimitri Vegas & like Mike, and A-Trak. The organisers have gone all out to add extra sound and lights to the venue to make it into a one nite european super-club.
Rascal (Aka Dylan kwabena Mills) last played Auckland at the 2010’s Big Day Out, when he became a flatter’s name check on the release of his album Tongue n’ Cheek. That record produced no less than four #1 hits in Blighty including the multi platinum party-time smash ‘Bonkers’. More recently he got to collaborate with Florence & the Machine on ‘You’ve Got The Dirtee love’ and pal DJ Fresh on ‘The Power’. But the super highlight has to be performing as part of the 2012 london Olympic Games opening ceremony, and laying down ‘scream’ as one of the five tracks to officially soundtrack london 2012.
not bad for a lad from the back of the east end. Mills’ nigerian father died when he was young, so he was raised by his Ghanaian mother Priscilla.
“i had issues as a kid. i was violent and disruptive.” he told the Times, “The way my mum helped was by finding me a different school every time i got kicked out, always fighting to keep me in the school system.” By the time he got to his fifth school he was a statistic, being excluded from all available classes except for music. Time on hands meant making music on the school’s computer, encouraged by a music teacher and a summer attendance at a music workshop, the Tower hamlets summer University of which he’s now one of their patrons.

That led to experimentation, occasional airtime on a local pirate and at age 16 a self-produced his first single, ‘i luv U.’ By 2002 he’d set up the Roll Deep Crew, a sprawling 13-piece garage collective, and signed to Xl. early collaborations included local underground stars like his mentor Wiley (‘We Ain’t having it’). One night on air at popular pirate radio station Deja Ju FM with Grime MC Crazy Titch a fight broke out between the pair. Their set featured many early Grime artists and was filmed, a rare for the day. You can still catch it on YouTube, as over a million others have already. The fight got heady with two exchanging ‘diss’ tracks.
But since his imprisonment for murder in ‘05 Crazy Titch claims no more any issues with Dizzee Rascal. The man himself has been mum on the event since. still look hard and you might wonder if that chorus in ‘Bonkers’ has some references to Titch’s lock up time.
Rascal’s first solo, Boy in da Corner, hit the ground running entering the Uk Top 40 at top number, but peaking at #23. in the week of the release during a performance he was stabbed six times. The gossip rags claimed this was connected to a feud between Dizzee and garage act so solid Crew when he pinched their vocalist’s buttocks. The whole thing took place in Cyprus. ‘Crew’ member “Megaman” was later questioned by the local constabulary, but later released uncharged.
But things were looking up when in september 2003 Boy in da Corner was awarded the prestigious Mercury Prize for the best album making him the youngest person (at 19) to win and only the second rapper (after Ms. Dynamite the previous year).
since then the album showtime (2004) has scooped an nMe Award for innovation. Plus time with live Aid 20 and sponsorship deals with nike and ecko.
2007’s Maths + english was a reference to accounting and rapping: making money of the arts form. it was followed up by 2010’s Tongue n’ Cheek.
And help him score Best British Male at the 30th annual Brit Awards. Bringing the new Year, on 01 01 11, Rascal released DirteeTV.com alongside the newham Generals, D Double e and Footsie. This was a 25-track mixtape up as free download, and included features from fellow rappers JMe, kano, scrufizzer, example, and others. since then he’s signed a deal that will see him release on island Records, saying that he has “no plans” to ditch his commercial music but describing the sound as “worldly but fun.” if you front up at Vector on Friday you might just get a taste of that world, if you’re lucky!

after a dearth of horror games, Dead Space invigorated the genre when it released in 2008. Then Dead Space 2 hit, three years later, and it brought with it more action, less horror - but the series’ spirit remained. Dead Space 3 has now arrived; does it live up to the legacy?
Isaac Clarke, the chap you play throughout the series, is back - this time on Tau Volantis. He must (once again) lay waste to another breakout of Necromorphs and to destroy something called a Marker (the same thing he does in the earlier games.)
To be fair, the story is actually pretty great; as captivating the story is, however, the gameplay is starting to feel stale. More often than not, cut scenes show Isaac being separated from his group and doing what he can to get back to them. Chuck in the typical “find three of these things to progress” missions and you have the bulk of Dead Space 3.
Things start well; you play a soldier character for a bit and you’re introduced to what is more of a shooter than previous iterations. This could have worked well, had the game revolved around this new character, but it’s short-lived and you’re soon back in control of our favourite engineer. What this ends up introducing, however, is a strange imbalance of what could have been versus what actually is.
A new character and an evolution of the gameplay could have hooked new gamers and allowed the developers to push the final fight of the story as a more action-packed scenario. But instead, it never really gets to where it wants to be, sitting squarely in between third person shooter and survival horror.
Visceral Games (the developers) really needed to do something new to bring the same sense of fear and tension to the game that players were expecting. Instead, they’ve tried to appease too many types of gamers at once, and the result is something that’s sure to thrill none of them.
For those wanting to finish Isaac’s tale, it’s good to know you’ll at least have a beautiful game to look at and a great backstory, as found in text and audio logs. For those looking for a good shooter or an online experience, be sure to play this in co-op mode.

WhAT is iT about the Oscars that keeps movie-loving audiences hooked? is it the gowns? The glitz? Or the gongs? it’s without a doubt all three.
The lashings of excess and extravagance that goes into this one day is the epitome of an industry ignoring recession, providing a much-needed escape from day to day life. it’s also a lot of fun to play guessing games with who’s going to take the top honours.
As the ceremony got underway, it was clear we were in for something a bit different with Oscar host seth MacFarlane. The Family Guy creator proved why he’s a great host – he can genuinely sing, dance and make light-hearted/crude comedy when the occasion calls for it, mixing the old-school style with barbed digs at self-righteous celebrities. Opening with a typical monologue, much like his predecessor Ricky Gervais, seth said, “Welcome to the Oscars. The quest to make Tommy lee Jones laugh begins now” (he did get a chuckle from him) before launching into a mild Argo joke and a not-so PG rated Django joke about Rihanna, Chris Brown and that Grammy incident.
That quickly turned into an all singing, all dance wonder, as a TV screening William shatner in his iconic role of Captain kirk came down to warn seth about his future. What followed was a song about actress’ boobs that have been seen (for the record, kate Winslet gets the most mentions and naomi Watts was not impressed about hers being mention a la Mulholland Drive), Charlize Theron and Channing Tatum having a waltz and Flight reenacted with sock puppets. it was highly Family Guy-like, as if we had walked into a cutaway sequence of seth’s mind. And it was perfect; the right mix of boundary pushing and good fun.
Closing the monolouge on a rendition of ‘Be Our Guest’ (with a twist), we launched into the opening honours. Christoph Waltz was first off the bat for his role in Django – one couldn’t help but get a sense of déjà vu, with him winning for Inglourious Basterds last year in a role he was questionable typecast in. Beating out Tommy lee Jones and Alan Arkin was potentially controversial, but still deserved.
The highlight of the night was a tribute to the James Bond movies, celebrating 60 years in cinema. As well as a beautifully scored tribute to the theme song – along with a montage of Bond moments projecting on
the back wall – Dame shirley Bassey made a guest appearance to sing the iconic track ‘Goldfinger’. Although a little bit…bigger…and more breathy than in her young years, the diva earned a standing ovation as she belted out the tune, sounding not a day over 30.
Anne hathaway (predictably) took out her first Oscar for her harrowing role in Les Misérables as Fantine. While she didn’t cry, there was definitely a chin waggle and her voice cracked as she thanked everyone from co-star hugh Jackman to her husband – adding that it was ”by far and away the greatest moment of my life when you walked into it”. her win might be a close second.
Life of Pi director and multiple Oscar winner Ang lee took the surprise of the night – the Achievement in Directing award – as many thought Ben Affleck would be the crowing glory. There’s no arguing the film was brilliantly directed though.
Girl of the moment Jennifer lawrence won out against many of her more experienced and older peers for the Best Actress award for Silver Linings Playbook. Despite tripping over her enormous white train – and then calling herself on it in her acceptance speech – she maintained composure and proved why she’s set to be a future star for life.
he may have hung up the beard, but Daniel Day-lewis was still look dapper as he accepted the Best Actor award (for the third time) for his portrayal of Lincoln. The veteran award winner is 55 and has still got it going on against his competition.
First lady Michelle Obama presented the Best Picture award, building it up to be a truly spectacular announcement – and it was. Ben Affleck, overwhelmed and very emotional, took out the top honour for Argo. Thanking everyone with real gusto and emotion, the director has cemented himself as a behind-the-camera force to be reckoned with.
And that concludes yet another year of Oscar glory and award seasons. A predictable set of winners –mostly – this year, but perhaps that was because it was those who won their golden men truly rose above the rest to secure their place in acting history.
