  • Ode to Class of '29As our reunion time draws nearIt brings me thoughts of yesteryear,I wish that I were young once moreBack in those days when co-eds woreNo sweaters, skirts or bobby soxBut went to class in party frocks,Their coats clutched tightly at the sideAnd high heels clicking with each stride .When girls who smoked were much more shockingThan those who wore a rolled down stocking,'Twas strange there always was a breezeTo whip their skirts above their kneesWhile lawyers justified their "reps"By whistling from the law barn steps. Those were the days D D M CCreated many a mystery,And those who broke the no-car ruleMight find themselves kicked out of school .The rules were mostly "Thou shalt nots"And students hid from () . B. Grotts .It seems it's hardly been a dayAnd yet my hair is getting grey,The campus hasn't changed so muchExcept for classrooms, dorms and such,The styles today are much in lineWith what we wore in '29,What puzzles me I must acknowledgeIs why these children are in college? They are not prodigies I'm toldSo it must be I am getting old.The years pass quicker than a wink,It's always later than I think. As our reunion date approachesI am amazed how time encroaches,25 means Silver and within our ranksSome have silver piled in banksWhile others' pocketbooks are bare,Their only silver in their hair .But if I've gained some worthwhile knowledgeIn all the years since I left college,It is that everyone needs friendsAnd friendship pays big dividends. So let's all plan to meet and clineWith friends we knew in '29 .

Mother of the YearOklahoma's Mother of the Year is energetic Mrs. Clyde M. Becker, 66, grey-

haired, peppery, who has lived more than most people would in three life-times . Her years have seen her from Iowa plains to China floods, from Coloradomining towns to camps in the New Mexican mountains. A widow since 1938, shehas seen all her six sons through the University .

Now living quietly in Chickasha, devoting much of her time to civic work,Mrs. Becker was born in Iowa in 1888 . When she was six, her father, a minister, packed up the family and sailed with them to China.

There the family lived in a rock cabin, a house that flooded at every heavyrain . After six years, with a rebellion shortly before the turn of the century, thefamily was shipped home . At 12, Mrs . Becker entered her first American schoolin the second grade. Characteristically, she made up for this lost time the next yearby skipping five grades .

In high school she passed her botany course in a month, taking the finalexam with the other students and scoring a 98 . Mrs . Becker was 17 when hermother died of cancer, and she enrolled in what is now Oklahoma City University .After two years she decided to go into missionary work, but after graduating fromcollege in 1911 she married Clyde M. Becker, a young geologist.

Becker's first job took them to Colorado, where they lived in a shack andwhere their first child was born in snow so deep that the doctor's buggy overturnedfour times getting there. Later, with $400, the Becker's went to New Mexico witha tent, mattress, rocking chair and a No . 2 stove. After a while their money wasgone; they moved to town where Becker did odd jobs until entering World War Ias a second lieutenant .

The war past, he returned to geology, but over the years he re-invested muchof their money in "dry holes or royalty." When he died 16 years ago, there wasn'tmuch left for the family . Sons ranged from 10 to 24 years of age.

Asked how she made out during this rugged period, Mrs. Becker declared,"Oh, ends always met, but it was mighty tough at times for the first couple ofyears." Ends met somehow, because all of her sons achieved degrees at O.U ., andit was for their care she received the honor of outstanding mother .

All have geology degrees, although the oldest, Fred, '35geol, '46med, is a phy-sician at Altus, having entered medical school after his father's death. The fivewho are geologists are Robert, '43geo1, Ardmore; Theodore, '43geol, Wichita Falls;twins Phillip, '49geol, and Donald, '49geol, of Midland, Texas, and Billings, Mon-tana, and Clyde, '51geol, Oklahoma City .

Besides her life as a mother, Mrs. Becker works with the Red Cross, AmericanCancer Society, Girl Scouts (of which she is training chairman at Chickasha andleader of two troops), Parent-Teacher Associations, Chickasha Youth Program,Methodist Church and American Legion Auxiliary.

Aims of Education-Student ViewsContinued from page 12

sible avenue for the acquisition of knowl-edge and the training of the intellect of theintellectually outstanding ; to prevent thetragic and wasteful retarding of intellectualgrowth ; to encourage the highest possibledevelopment of each person in accordancewith his innate intelligence .Every educator knows that it is ex-

tremely difficult to avoid striking an aver-age in teaching which bores the above-average and puzzles the below-average stu-dent . This is the trap in state education. However, I believe the place where thatdanger most needs combatting is in thegrade and high schools . Little can or needbe done in institutions of higher learning .

Certainly, it must be conceded that theaverage and below-average student is neverhurt by being exposed to college work .Decidedly to the contrary, he is at leasttouched to some degree by problems, bothpersonal and otherwise, and has to evolvesome kind of answers. He learns somethingof his duties to himself and to society andacquires an ability to live with othersthrough compromise .He trust realize that there are very few

definite answers; that most things are grayinstead of black or write. Mere exposurealone to college training knocks off therough edges of self-righteousness, bigotryand conceit.
