Cliff HangerAxel rock climbs in the mountains. Axel’s father, Dag,
runs a rock climbing school there. One day a big stormcomes near. Axel finds out that Grits, his dog, is trappedon a cliff. Axel and Dag set out to rescue Grits.
When they reach the bottom of Cathedral Wall, Dag counts the seconds between the lightning and thethunder. This is how he knows how close the storm is.Dag doesn’t think they have time to rescue Grits beforethe storm comes. Axel sees Grits on a ledge and is afraidhe’ll fall. He starts to climb.
After he climbs up about fifteen feet, Axel attaches arope to the cliff so he won’t fall. He makes it to the ledgewhere Grits waits. The storm gets very bad. Axel and hisdog wait on the ledge for it to pass.
The storm finally moves on. Axel uses a rope with aharness to lower Grits. But now he doesn’t have enoughrope to get all the way to the bottom. He goes downhalfway and unties the rope. Now he has to be verycareful because there’s nothing to save him if he falls.Axel slowly climbs down the mountain. He makes it! Dag is relieved, and he, Axel, and Grits rest at the bottom of the cliff.

The Keeping QuiltA long time ago, Anna came to America from Russia
with her family. They lived in New York City. Theymissed their home. So Anna’s mother made a quilt toremind them of Russia. She made the quilt from oldclothing that she cut up. She sewed the pieces ofclothing together to make the quilt.
When Anna grew up, her mother gave her the quilt.Anna gave the quilt to Carle, her daughter. Then, MaryEllen, Carle’s daughter, got the quilt. Mary Ellen gave thequilt to her daughter, Patricia. Patricia is the one whowrote the story about the quilt.
The quilt was special. It was used to keep babieswarm. It was also used at weddings, birthdays, andSabbath meals. The author calls the quilt the KeepingQuilt. It tells the family story. The author hopes to tellthe story of the quilt to her own grandchildren.

The Mysterious Giant of Barletta
Barletta, a small town in Italy, had a giant statue of a boy. The statue was in the town square. Barletta wasa peaceful town. Everyone thought it would always bepeaceful.
One day, the people heard that an army was comingto destroy Barletta. The people had no way to protectthemselves. The oldest woman in town, Zia Concetta, began to talk to her friend, the giant statue. She hopedhe could help. And that is what he did!
Zia Concetta made a plan for saving the town.Everyone hid. The giant went to sit three miles outsidethe town. He held pieces of an onion close to his eyes. When the army came, they saw a giant boy crying, sittingin a puddle of tears. The giant told the captain of thearmy that he was sad because he was too small to playwith the other boys of the town. This scared the army.
If the boys were so big, the men must be muchbigger. The army ran away. The giant went back to hisspot in the town square. The town was peaceful again.

Two Days in MaySonia lived in a big city. One day in May she looked
out her window. She saw five deer in the garden. Thedeer were eating. They had come to the city looking forfood. The neighbors came to Sonia’s yard to see the deer.
Sonia found out that the deer would starve in thecity. The woods where the deer lived had been cut downto make roads and towns. The city’s animal controlofficer was going to shoot the deer.
The people in the neighborhood did not want thedeer to be shot. They called a wildlife rescue worker. Hisjob was to find new homes for animals. The peoplestayed with the deer day and night to keep them safe.
When the rescue worker came, he took the deer tosome woods. They would be safe and have plenty offood. Everyone in the neighborhood was happy thatthey had helped. They became good friends too.

Across the Wide Dark Sea
One day, a boy and his family left their country tolive in another country. They sailed on a very largesailing ship. The journey took a long time, and therewere many storms. The people were cold and wetbecause the ship leaked. Many people were seasick.
The people traveled for many months until they sawland. They were very happy when they landed. Theywere also worried. They did not know what the landwould be like or whether there were people living there.
They built a town. When the winter came, manypeople died of hunger and cold. In spring, some Indianscame to the town. They taught the people how to fishand grow crops. They would have food for the next winter.
In April, the sailors sailed the ship back across thesea. The people stayed. They felt scared and sad, butthey were also proud. They had made a good town andhad learned about the land. They looked forward tomaking the town even better.

Trapped by the Ice!Sir Ernest Shackleton and his crew wanted to be the
first people to cross the South Pole in Antarctica. Theywere on the ship Endurance. But they became trapped in the ice. The men left the ship. They took as much asthey could from the ship. The ship was crushed by theice. Soon it broke apart and sank.
The men were safe. They camped on floating sheetsof ice. Ice floes carried them close to land. One man wasattacked by a sea leopard. Another man fell into a largecrevasse in the ice.
They had lifeboats, so they sailed to an island calledElephant Island. Shackleton told them to camp there. He and five other men took a lifeboat to find help.
Shackleton and his men almost sank during a storm. But they finally landed on South Georgia Island. Theyhiked across the land and climbed icy mountains.
They found people to help them. Shackleton got abigger boat. He went back to rescue his men. It tookhim three months. His boat had to break through theice. He reached his men. Everyone had survived. Theywent home. Shackleton was a good leader, and he was a hero.

Poppa’s New PantsA boy named George helped his Grandma Tiny clean
house for a visit from Big Mama and Aunt Viney. Afterthe company came, George and his Poppa went to thestore. Poppa bought some gray pants with a red plaidpattern. The pants were too big.
Poppa wanted one of the women to shorten hispants. They were all too tired. Poppa put his pants onthe back of a rocking chair.
George slept in the kitchen that night because BigMama and Aunt Viney were in his room. In the night,George saw a white shape like a ghost come into thekitchen. This happened three times. He was scared. Hecould hear the rocking chair creak, and he heard snippingsounds. He kept telling himself that ghosts were notreal.
In the morning, Poppa held up his pants. They wereso short that they only came to his knees. All of thethree women had cut six inches from the pants and thenhemmed them. The women were the white shapesGeorge had seen. They really wanted to help Poppa!George was happy because now the pants fit him!

No Matter What theWeather
When it’s sunny outside,I go for a bike ride.
When it starts to rain,I play with my train.
When the snowflakes fall,I make a giant snowball.
Whether it is cold or hot,I always like to play a lot!
Draw what the person in the poem does in each kind of weather. Then color your drawings.
