SC State Department of Education - News and Updates from the Read to Succeed DepartmentThis session will be based on the newest updates and information from the SC State Department of Education’s Read to SucceedDepartment, as well as any other important information that may be shared from the State Department of Education.Presented by: Cathy Jones-Stork and the Read to Succeed Team

2. #RealWriting: Content Area Writing for Modern StudentsWriting is a necessity in education, but many teachers are unsure of how to incorporate writing engagements that aid students inlearning content AND allow them to hone their writing skills. Using novel techniques and ideas, from the incorporation of ESPNand rap music, to hashtags and peacock feathers, participants will learn how to incorporate writing by using unique methods tomotivate and engage students in authentic writing tasks. The new book, #RealWriting: Content Area Writing for Modern Students,will be released in April from Shell Education, a division of Teacher Created Materials.Presented by: Rebecca Harper

We’ll be “reading” photos, ads, and moving images. Resourcesgalore. You will leave with a plethora of ideas you can implement on Monday morning.Presented by: Frank Baker

Going for Gold: Using Digital Tools to Foster Collaboration, Communication, and CreativityTeamwork is an integral component of the literacy process and digital tools can help provide opportunities for our students tocollaborate, communicate, and create in engaging ways. In this preconference session, the presenters will share a variety of digitaltools to help you integrate technology seamlessly into your curriculum. Examples of the tools being used in elementary classroomswill be shown. Please bring devices and join us to discover easy-to-implement digital technologies to add to your teaching toolbox.Presented by: Katie Stover and Lindsay Yearta

8. How Writers Create Stories for Young ReadersAward-winning children’s book author John Claude Bemis will share his process for planning, outlining, and revising books foryoung readers. Historical Fiction, Informational Texts, Primary Sources: Integrating Social Studies for K-5Elementary teachers know there is never enough time in the day to accomplish everything that they want to do... especially socialstudies. This session will share these ideas on integrating social studies into their day with historical fiction, informational texts, andprimary sources. There will be book suggestions for each grade and ways to integrate these books. Teachers will receive grade listsand activities... plus some PowerPoints to engage their students and address the SC Social Studies Academic Standards.
