An invitation to Reykjavík for the EABCT 2011 Congress

On behalf of the Icelandic Association for Cognitive and Behavioural Therapies, it is my great pleasure to invite you to atttend the 41st Annual EABCT in Iceland. We have prepared an exciting scientific programme that will take place in Harpa, our brand new multi-venue performing arts and conference center situated by Reykjavík harbour.

We are proud to host an EABCT congress for the first time in Iceland; the home of the Sagas that were written on calfskin in the 12th and 13th century. The Sagas’ content should satisfy both radical and ACT behaviourists and cognitive behaviour and Schema therapists. In the Sagas one finds short precise descriptions, almost telegraphic in form of current intervention issues. There is no direct description of emotions, but all the same, one can read between the lines how the persons felt.

We have a great congress in store for you. The scientific programme has been prepared in consultation with an international panel of experts. The main theme of the congress will be PREVENTION. The programme will cover issues of prevention in cognitive and behaviour theories and therapies. The presenters, who are leaders in their fields will be addressing diverse topics such as prevention and early intervention in emotional disorders, treatment effectiveness and development, mindfulness and emotion regulation, along with theoretical updates in the field. The programmme includes plenary sessions, keynote addresses, roundtable discussions, panel debates, symposia, open papers and poster sessions. Pre-congress workshops are skill-based workshops that are led by internationally renowned leaders in their fields and cover a range of CBT applications at introductory, intermediate and advanced levels of training. Along with the ambitious scientific programme EABCT 2011 offers a full social programme to help attendees enjoy the best of Reykjavík and its surrounding areas.

Please visit the Congress website www.eabct2011.org for full details of the programme and do remember to subscribe to our EABCT 2011 newsletter to receive e-mail updates regarding the Congress. Hopefully you will be inspired to submit your work for presentation and contribute to making the EABCT 2011 in Reykjavík an energetic and inspiring congress.

On behalf of Icelandic Association for Cognitive and Behavioural Therapies,

Eiríkur Örn Arnarson, Congress President

A Welcome from the President of Iceland Ólafur Ragnar Grímsson,

Patron of the EABCT Congress

Iceland has for years been privileged to serve as the location for many distinguished international conferences. The creative forces of nature on display in our country have provided the inspiration for innovative dialogue and constructive discussions.

It has fallen on the European Association of Behavioural and Cognitive Therapies to usher in a new era for Iceland, as the congress will take place in our new concert hall beside the harbour, with its extensive views of the Atlantic Ocean and the colourful mountains; a landmark building wrapped in a unique glass and steel artwork by our world-famous countryman Ólafur Elíasson. Some have said that what you see is outstanding contemporary art which happens to contain a concert hall.

For the people of Iceland, your congress is especially welcome, as we have in recent years become increasingly concerned by the prevalence of mood-related disorders among the adolescents in our population.

We know that on a global scale it is now estimated that the costs and disabilities associated with depression will surpass those of cardio-vascular and heart disease by the year 2020 when mood disorders are projected to become the most debilitating human problem; anxiety and behavioural difficulties are also of great social and personal significance.

Furthermore, the recent economic and financial crisis has exacerbated the negative impact of psychological disorders in many European societies and will unfortunately in all likelihood continue to do so for years to come.

It is thus both timely and significant that we turn our attention towards methods of prevention, which will be the predominant theme of the EABCT 2011 Congress. It is a significant area of research which hopefully will enhance people’s coping skills, help to offset the effects of psychological disorders and reduce the negative impact of the current economic climate on our societies.

We in Iceland are honoured to be able to contribute to the success of your deliberations. It is my sincere hope that our country will prove to be a stimulating location that will help the 2011 Congress reach constructive conclusions

Iceland is closer than you think and probably also far different from what you ever

imagined. Where else can you witness such marvels of Mother Nature as glaciers,

steaming geysers and volcanoes, raging rivers and magnificent waterfalls, a multitude

of birds, cavorting whales just offshore and many other surprises.

Iceland is an island of 103.000 km2 (39,756 sq. miles), about one-third larger than

Scotland or Ireland. It has a population of just over 300.000, almost two thirds living

in the capital Reykjavík and its neighbouring towns in the southwest.

The CiTy oF reykjaVík

Reykjavík is an excellent venue for the EABCT 2011 Congress.

Founded in 1786, it is the capital of Iceland and the northernmost capital in the world.

Reykjavik is a vibrant city offering most of the conveniences and attractions usually

associated with major capitals of the world. Its amazing array of possibilities is why

Reykjavik is sometimes called the biggest little capital in the world.
