  • Progression and text type supportin NarrativeThe typical features and conventions of these common narrative fiction text types areexplained in more detail in the 'About narrative text types' section:

    adventure texts mystery texts science fiction fantasy texts historical fiction texts contemporary fiction texts dilemma stories dialogue texts traditional tales.

    'Traditional tales' is slightly different to other text types, as there is more detailedinformation on the specific features (e.g. themes and characters) and conventionsthese stories generally follow. It is also broken into four sub-classes: myths, legends,fairy tales and fables, which each contain further detailed information.

    Following the text type overviews, Achieving progression in Narrative describes whatprogression might look like, and illustrates how you can support pupils developmentwithin and between Key Stages 1 and 2.

    Planning for progression across a range of text typesConsider this brief summary of the benefits to a developing writer ofexposure to a wide range of text types, and how good planning canmaximise this. This is part of Support for Writing.
