3D GEOLOGICAL MODELING AT BRGM 50 years of experience continuous production of multi-purpose 3D
geological modelso geological knowledgeo applications towards predictive
geosciences commercial tools (e.g. Petrel, Isatis, Surpac…) « home-made » innovative solutions:
o GDM Suite o GeoModellero and others standalone developments…
current target would be to combine and integrate all approaches in a common platform, implementing the transition from (desktop) tools to information systems
o easily explore existing modelso take the best from each approach and build
hybrid models (e.g. integration of BIM and/or LIDAR and geological models)
o open to collaborations

Geological Data Modeling
a set of complementary components:o delivery processing
viewer and web geological datao Interpolation
geostatistical toolbox, data modeling and exploration
o 2,5D modelingstratigraphical pile to combine multiple layers: interpolated thicknesses and/or elevations with an explicit descriptioni.e. f(x,y)
a focus on geological data managemento cross validation tools…

3D Geological Modeling originally developed for 3D geological
cartographyo 3D description of complex geological
architectures: erosions, fault networks, intrusions…
o co-kriging of both interfaces location and orientation data
o first software to use implicit geological modeling
geophysical forward and inverse modeling (Monte Carlo approach)
recent developments on unstructured mesh generation for simulation applications

SOME FIELDS OF RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT continuous production of multi-purpose 3D geological models for predictive
geoscienceso disseminate geological knowledge: storing and delivering geological models with
on-demand representation and visualizationo characterize subsurface resources: raw materials, water, energy…o sharing models for thematic applications: export informed meshes for
(multi)physics simulations
French Geological Referential Platform (RGF)
improving the efficiency of model production and developing new modeling techniques
o multi-scale models, fault networks, anisotropies, integration of LIDAR/million points acquisitions…
o dealing with geological uncertainties
pushing for the standardization of geological concepts and data exchangeo BRGM is co-chairing the joint OGC / CGI-IUGS GeoScience DWGo promote and implement those standards in several collaborative projects

TOWARDS FULLY INTEGRATED GEO-PHYSICAL MODELS
from 3D geological modelsto hydrothermal models
Baie du Lamentin (Martinique)
the most efficient way to mitigate the geological risk is the collaborative integration of multidisciplinary data and interpretations into models of the subsurface the challenge is to have a two-way integration: physical simulations ran on geological
models and geological models validated/modified from the output of physical simulations

FRENCH GEOLOGICAL REFERENTIAL PLATFORM
a scientific and technological challengeto develop a 3D description of the geological bodies that make up the subsurface and to understand the mechanisms that govern their evolution over time
a 3D Information Systemto provide a continuous, homogeneous and coherent coverage of the geological knowledge in three dimensionsto anticipate and respond to new demands from society that involve the subsurface(e.g. energy, risks, resources, urbanization and pollution…)
