THE TIMES OF INDIA, AHMEDABAD TUESDAY, DECEMBER 24, 2019 4 GUJARAT Ahmedabad: A getaway to Ahmedabad’s countryside during winter months must be an ideal destination, an escape from the city humd- rum and warmer nights. In- terestingly, the city’s land surface temperatures (LST) are getting warmer each ye- ar during winters, especial- ly during nights, a 16-year study has revealed. This dif- ference in surface tempera- tures during winter nights has gone up from 3 degrees to 5 degrees celcius. The elaborate study of surface urban heat island (SUHI) temperature data captured by satellite- and lo- cation-based study of Ah- medabad’s municipal limits and rural outskirts has reve- aled this. During summer dayti- me, surface temperatures in rural areas are warmer than their urban areas by 0.63°C. During winters, the daytime surface temperatures in citi- es is hotter by 0.37°C. The me- an temperature difference in the night during summer is 1.84°C and is the highest during winters at 3.19°C. The study had examined LST and SUHI from Modera- te Resolution Imaging Spec- troradiometer (MODIS) data over Ahmedabad city from 2003 to 2018. Researchers Pir Moham- mad and Ajanta Goswami from department of earth sciences, IIT-Roorkee, and Stefania Bonafoni of Univer- sity of Perugia, Italy, had un- dertaken a large exercise of analysing land cover maps, vegetation index, evapot- ranspiration, urban popula- tion, and groundwater level across the years to assess the- se multiple factor impact on SUHI variations for Ahmed- abad city. “Summer and winter land surface patterns were analyzed, both daytime and night-time,” claims the rese- arch. It further adds that Ah- medabad, was characterized by a semi-arid climate. Last year, another study for major Gujarat cities from Charotar University of Sci- ence and Technology (CUST), Anand, and IIT- Mumbai had found that van- ishing green cover in rural areas and exposed fields af- ter harvest during the sum- mer were some of the rea- sons for rising rural tempe- ratures. The study claimed that rural areas in Gujarat were hotter by 2 to 2.5°C or 1-2°C when compared to nearby ur- ban zones during daytime. The study used MODIS satel- lite data to develop the heat map. These included Ahmed- abad, Surat, Rajkot, Vadoda- ra, Jamnagar, and Bhavna- gar in Gujarat. The study found that bet- ween summer months of March and May, most cities are cooler than the rural or suburban regions around them.
