Mi mirar epistemológico y el progreso de la ciencia

Resumen

El autor revisa diferentes respuestas que se han dado a la definición de epistemología, destacando

de ellas el proceso de reflexión del investigador, tanto individual, como en forma compartida.

En la mayoría de los textos la palabra epistemología se encuentra relacionada

como aquella ciencia, o parte de la ciencia encargada de la teoría del

conocimiento; caso de Tamayo (1997) que, al citar a Aristóteles, la reconoce como

la ciencia que tiene por objeto conocer las cosas en su esencia y en sus causas.

Para Piaget, la epistemología "es el estudio del pasaje de los estados de menor

conocimiento a los estados de un conocimiento más avanzado, preguntándose

Piaget, por el cómo conoce el sujeto ( como se pasa de un nivel de conocimiento a

otro); la pregunta es más por el proceso y no por lo "qué es" el conocimiento en sí"

(Cortes y Gil 1997).

Para Ceberio y Watzlawick (1998), "el término epistemología deriva del griego

episteme que significa conocimiento, y es una rama de la filosofía que se ocupa de

todos los elementos que procuran la adquisición de conocimiento e investiga los

fundamentos, límites, métodos y validez del mismo".

Ahora bien, la adquisición de conocimiento se fundamenta en vivencias otorgadas

por el mundo de la vida, (1) en la cotidianidad del sujeto; pero son las constantes

que se verifican en esas vivencias, en la adecuación y relación sujeto – objeto -

sujeto, en la validez de los conceptos que surjan de dicha adecuación, y en la

posibilidad de predecir o interpretar acciones estableciendo causas o

comprensiones sobre lo que realmente la epistemología legisla. Se puede esbozar

entonces que la epistemología tiene por objeto ese conocimiento que se soporta

en sí mismo o que soporta alguna disciplina en su especificidad; lo que la sustenta

como tal, su esencia, sus alcances y límites en su acepción interna (propia de la

disciplina) y externa (su influencia en el contexto social).

Para otros autores, la epistemología es aquella parte de la ciencia que tiene como

objeto(no el único) hacer un recorrido por la historia del sujeto respecto a la

construcción del conocimiento científico; es decir, la forma cómo éste ha

objetivado, especializado y otorgado un status de cientificidad al mismo; pero a su

vez, el reconocimiento que goza este tipo de conocimiento por parte de la

comunidad científica. Es aquella epistemología que estudia la génesis de las

ciencias; que escudriña cómo el ser humano ha transformado o comprendido su

entorno por la vía de métodos experimentales o hermenéuticos en el deseo o

necesidad de explicar fenómenos en sus causas y en sus esencias.

Concepción esta última asumida por Thuillier (citado por Mardones 1991) al

considerar la noción de epistemología como aquella "ciencia o filosofía de la

ciencia que no impone dogmas a los científicos sino que estudia la génesis y la

estructura de los conocimientos científicos". Para el autor, la epistemología no es

un sistema dogmático conformado por leyes inmutables e impuestas; sino que

mas bien, es ese trasegar por el conocimiento científico que se mueve en el

imaginario de la época; las reflexiones sobre el mismo, y el quebranto o "crisis" de

las normas que sustentan un paradigma en particular propio de una comunidad

científica (Ver Kuhn 2001).

Ahora bien, relacionar la epistemología con la génesis de los conocimientos

científicos, permite reconocer en ella los diferentes alcances que tienen este tipo

de conocimientos en las instituciones de una sociedad, los saberes ideológicos de

la época, y el impacto y transformación cultural causado por un conocimiento

objetivo que a veces se abstrae de la realidad.

Desde el reconocimiento del entorno y la emergencia(emerger) del conocimiento

en medio de la historia, Osorio (1998) percibe dos visones en la epistemología:

una externa y una interna; yo entiendo la visión externa, comenta el autor, "como

la consideración del contexto social y cultural en la actividad reflexiva acerca del

conocimiento; y por la visión interna, los aspectos epistemológicos sin dicho

contexto." Visión esta que se aleja un tanto del término formal de epistemología

como objeto de estudio respecto a la esencia de algo, e invita más bien, a tener

una mirada ecológica del mundo real en relación con un saber disciplinar.

Para Galindo (1998), poseer una mirada ecológica, es tener presente los alcances

del conocimiento en cuestión (de una disciplina en particular) en su acepción

interna, y la influencia del contexto o entorno donde se gesta y se hace presente

dicho conocimiento.

El mismo Lakatos, en su propuesta "Los programas de Investigación Científica",

considera que todo programa posee una historia interna, una historia externa y

una historia real. En la historia interna del programa, "se precisan los

desplazamientos progresivos o regresivos de las problemáticas que lo han

afectado, y la victoria que emerge lentamente de un programa sobre otro,

consiguiendo así, una explicación racional del crecimiento del conocimiento"; por

otra parte, la historia externa "son aquellas explicaciones (del crecimiento racional

del programa) que requieren de teorías empíricas para explicar los factores

residuales no racionales del programa; por tanto, la historia externa, suministra

explicaciones del ritmo, localización y selectividad entre otros, de los

acontecimientos históricos del contexto en el cual se ha desarrollado el programa".

Por último, ambas historias (interna – externa) son contrastadas en la historia real

del programa. Sin embargo, es importante aclarar que Lakatos (1983) otorga

prioridad a la historia interna.

A mi juicio, la historia real del programa, es esa mirada ecológica que hace el

científico - investigador al confrontar sus postulados verosímiles con una realidad

que no le es ajena. Por consiguiente, "la aptitud de contextualizar tiende a producirel surgimiento de un pensamiento "ecologizante" en el sentido de que sitúa todo

acontecimiento, información o conocimiento en una relación inseparable con el

medio - cultural, social, económico, político y por supuesto natural, no hace más

que situar un acontecimiento en su contexto e incita a ver cómo éste modifica al

contexto o cómo le da luz diferente" (Morín 1999).

Poseer una mirada ecológica, permite asumir la epistemología como una forma de

comprender la construcción del conocimiento científico unido a la vida cotidiana

del sujeto; puesto que por más que el científico (social o natural) quiera dar sus

explicaciones o comprensiones al margen de la vida, y apoyar sus postulados sin

un fundamento del mundo vital cotidiano, no será capaz (intento fallido) por cuanto

sus explicaciones carecerían de vida y sensibilidad; su misma esencialidad

(humana) lo invita, o más bien lo consume y lo "arrastra" a explicar y comprender

que sus planteamientos sistemáticos y coherentes tienen como principio fundante

una racionalidad sazonada con el sueño, el mito, el asombro, el deseo de

descubrir y de hacer de sus utopías "científicas" algo realizable y plausible.

"La epistemología es a mi criterio, ese punto de vista desde el cual me relaciono

con las cosas, con los fenómenos, con los hombres y eventualmente con lo

trascendente. Esto, que se produce en el ámbito personal y cotidiano, también

ocurre en el ámbito científico, donde proliferan distintas corrientes y sistemas de

pensamiento que resultan ser, en definitiva, formas de ver el mundo..... Podríamos

comparar la Epistemología con un mirador u observatorio de la realidad que, con

lentes más o menos agudos, la miran críticamente, dándose cuenta que no se

halla fuera de ella, sino contribuyendo a constituirla; es decir, no es meramente un

proceso de observación, sino una participación activa en el hecho o fenómeno

estudiado" Ricci (1999).

Noción de Ricci que se asemeja al “conocimiento proliferante” propuesto Mill, el

cual invita a mirarlo "no sólo como una interpretación de la experiencia, ni como

algo que sólo responde a problemas epistemológicos, ni tampoco como una mera

definición del acto del conocer, sino a considerar el conocimiento como una

solución a un problema de la vida. Citado por Feyerabend (1974). Solución que

necesita de una epistemología que se pregunte si aquellos conocimientos

producto de una investigación, llevan a un beneficio social y cultural.

En tal sentido, se trata de mirar el conocimiento "científico" como algo que hace

parte de la vida del hombre, no sólo de su deseo, sino también de su necesidad;

por consiguiente, la epistemología lo debe ser también. Visión epistemológica en

la que yo, como investigador, soy capaz de "darme cuenta" (pensar y reflexionar)

del alcance de mis observaciones en un mundo que estoy viendo como objetivodesde mi visión subjetiva; el cual, a su vez objetivo con mis verificaciones o

comprensiones.

¿Qué es entonces un mirar epistemológico? Es poseer conciencia histórica y

reflexiva de un mundo que me observa, me rodea y me absorbe por más que

quiera objetivarlo desde mis propios argumentos racionales; es una epistemología

donde se alberga el ser y quehacer de mi disciplina específica rodeada de otras

tantas que la pueden complementar(transdisciplinariedad). De lo que se trata

entonces, es de tener presente como modifico el mundo, pero también, como soy

modificado por él en el ciclo de mi espacio vital.

Siendo así, epistemología no sería sólo el objeto de estudio de una disciplina, ni el

trasegar de ésta a través de la historia. Es más que esto; es una práctica continua

y móvil de un mundo dinámico que: aunque esté plagado de leyes fijas e

inmutables, el científico-investigador por multiplicidad de razones(la mayoría de

ellas en confrontación y reflexión con el otro) se encarga de desenterrar o arrancar

toda esa urdimbre estática que sustenta la ciencia en su generalidad, y especial,

aquellas propias su saber disciplinar.

La misión del epistemólogo entonces, es estar en constante movimiento crítico -

reflexivo, así tienda a formar nuevamente leyes fijas e inmutables, las cuales a su

vez, debe volver a desenterrar y poner a consideración de los otros (pares u

homólogos); ya que todo su ser inquieto, movido por la crítica constructiva (y a

veces destructiva) de sus pares, vuelve a remover lo estatificado para ponerlo

nuevamente en escena.

"Las categorías y todos los elementos estables de nuestro conocimiento deben ser

puestos en movimiento...nuestra tarea es hacer fluido el material petrificado que

encontremos, y volver a iluminar los conceptos y contenidos en esa materia

muerta...disolver la oposición de una subjetividad y una objetividad congeladas y

comprender el origen del mundo intelectual y real como un devenir." Mill citado por

Feyerabend (1974).

En la percepción de ese congelamiento estatificado en que duer men los conceptos

y que muchas veces se aceptan ciega y acríticamente, fue que Sir Karl Popper

criticó la teoría de T. S. Khun acerca de la forma como concibe éste el progreso

del conocimiento científico en su teoría de “Ciencia Normal”. Para Popper, la labor

que ejerce el científico dentro de la Ciencia Normal, es de alguien que desarrolla

una ciencia poco crítica y reflexiva; es decir, petrificada y agonizante; que asume

los paradigmas de forma ingenua sin someterlos a procesos de conjetura y

refutación permanente. Inclusive, Popper anuncia que quien construye este tipo de

conocimiento científico es “digno de compasión” capaz de conducir la ciencia e

incluso la civilización al aniquilamiento.

“La ciencia normal, es una actividad rutinaria, susceptible de conducir a la

empresa científica al aniquilamiento...su profesional es muy poco crítico, inexperto,

que no pone en duda el dogma dominante y que sólo acepta el dogma nuevo

acríticamente, según impulsos de la moda o corriente presente suficientemente

seguida...el científico normal es una persona digna de compasión: es un hombre

mal formado profesionalmente, ya que ha sido educado con un espíritu dogmático

y acrítico” (Lakatos y Musgrave 1975).

Ser digno de compasión, es no poner en duda los dogmas dominantes y seguirse

moviendo en ellos así la realidad nos grite al oído que podemos estar

equivocados; ser digno de compasión es seguir ahí(estatificados), haciendo

"Ciencia Normal" para un público ilustrado que tímidamente cuestiona nuestros

avances científicos; ser digno de compasión es no ejercer un proceso de

pensamiento reflexivo de forma permanente, y encerrarnos en nuestros propios

juicios de verificabilidad e irrefutabilidad; ser digno de compasión es no pensar que

el otro, que en ocasiones no se encuentra de acuerdo con mis certezas, puede

tener la razón; ser digno de compasión es ceñirse con rigurosidad a un método

ajustándolo truncada y forzosamente a la realidad; peor aún, llegar a la conclusión

que es la realidad la que no se ajusta a mí método; ser digno de compasión es

haber perdido, por lo acelerado de nuestro tiempo, la capacidad de pensar crítica y

reflexivamente. Es a esa ausencia de pensar crítica y reflexiva, lo que Nietszche

puede llamar "Pérdida de Dignidad" tal y como aparece citado al inicio del

presente escrito.

El Pensar reflexivo debe ser parte de nuestra mirada epistemológica, de nuestros

progresos científicos al tratar de comprender o explicar un fenómeno natural,

cultural o social. La epistemología debe llevar consigo un pensamiento crítico del

conocimiento en confrontación consigo mismo, con sus pares e impares (otros) y

con su mundo(lo otro); debe ser una epistemología proliferante movida por el

viento, la cual reacciona frente a aquellos adelantos científicos que el sujeto se

niega aceptar ciegamente y sin ningún juicio. Lo producido "como científico" por el

que hace ciencia, debe ser continuamente depurado en procesos subjetivos e

intersubjetivos de reflexión "como fuente de respiración, expiración - inspiración

que lleva consigo gérmenes fecundantes de una animación capaz de resistir a

largo término, la pesadez mortífera que tiende a la esclerosis....un viento así, es la

metáfora por excelencia de la circulación sin freno" Maffesoli (1999).

Epistemólogo es quien tiene conciencia reflexiva de su hacer "científico y

cotidiano"; del alcance de sus planteamientos en el contexto general y particular

(mirada ecológica); que considera que no puede escapar del error por mínimo que

este sea, pues el saber (darse cuenta de y actuar en correspondencia) que el error

existe, lo mueve nuevamente a reflexión, no para disminuirlo si a bien no pudiere;

sino para saber que está allí, presente , y afecta por tanto su saber científico

progresivo o degenerativo.

Ese "darse cuenta de, y actuar en correspondencia", hace parte del tener una

mirada epistemológica; pues el científico - investigador debe ser consciente que

todo cuanto ocurre a su alrededor, hace parte de su humanidad vital; de hombre

limitado que no transforma, produce y comprende fenómenos que pueden ser

ilimitados, pero que sí pueden ser aceptables o plausibles para un mundo

académico y social. Epistemólogo entonces, no es aquella persona encargada de

sólo hacer epistemología, sino que es ese sujeto que reflexiona constantemente

de su ser y hacer respecto a los otros y otro, atravesado por su devenir histórico.

Por último, se hace necesario precisar que el conocimiento epistemológico se

escenifica en la interacción, por cuanto no se anida en la estructura de un

pensamiento interno solipsístico, sino también en la interacción que se tiene con el

otro; es decir, es una epistemología producto de una reflexión compartida. Los

cuestionamientos del otro, las concordancias y discordancias, inclusive las no

empatías, son motivos que mueven al sujeto a ref lexionar; estas reflexiones, se

evidencian en lo público y en lo privado, en la convivencia, en el colectivo, en la

comunidad académica; en pocas palabras, en el intervalo del yo-otro, o sea, en un

nosotros. Igual que sucede con el científico que piensa re flexivamente, sucede

también con el grupo que construye un saber epistemológico, movido por una

reflexión émica de grupo, la cual es enriquecida y compartida en el ser de la

comunidad académica.
