PROdUCTION TEaM

Welcome to QUT dance’s 2014 graduation season!

This end of year performance season is a wonderful celebration and an important marker for our graduating class as part of their transition into the industry. It is a culmination of three years worth of learning – both technically, artistically, and most importantly, as people with clearly identified values and beliefs about who they are, and what kind of contribution they would like to make to the industry they are passionate about.

Dance 14 again incorporates a varied number of works and choreographic processes that the third years have been exposed to. as part of their standard performance unit of study, two works have been commissioned to push these students in quite different directions – Gavin Webber’s My Number Is...

and Vanessa Mafe-Keane’s Trailing Touch. In addition to this, the students all received the opportunity to learn three excerpts of works by world renowned choreographers – Graeme Murphy aO (remounted by Tracey Carrodus) and EdC artistic director Natalie Weir. Replicating real-world scenarios, the students had to: balance learning and rehearsing five sets of repertoire throughout the semester; expanding their skills via picking up choreography directly from videos versus having new works created on them; working with a varied number of rehearsal directors and choreographers; and auditioning against their fellow graduates to be cast within the excerpts for the final Dance 14 shows. Whilst not all graduating students will get to perform in the three excerpt works, the key learning has actually already happened back in the rehearsal studio over the entire semester.

Whilst our final 3rd year students are featured in Dance 14, it additionally showcases the learning journey for each of the other year levels within the QUT BFa (dance Performance) course. The first year students had the wonderful experience of working with Jack Chambers on the energetic number Until Late... The students were very excited to have this opportunity and have loved every minute of it – even though for many it was the first time they had done a jazz/commercial number or even worn chorus shoes! The second years, performing in In-Scripted by QUT dance Team member Jenny Roche, demonstrated an excellent level of commitment and openness to exploration of both movement and other disciplines. Engaging in creative writing activities was one component of the development process for this work, and they reported an increased level of mind-body engagement and skill development as a result.

as with any of our performance seasons, a great number of individuals, teams, and departments have made significant contributions to getting Dance 14 up and running. a heartfelt thank you to: QUT Precincts, drama – Technical Production, QUT/CIF Marketing, QUT Media, the School of MECa, and the Production, artistic, dance, and dance health teams respectively.

Lastly, thank you very much for your patronage, support and encouragement of our students as audience members, family and friends. They have worked very hard to make the most of the opportunities presented to them, and we are very proud of the results. We hope you enjoy the show!

This solo is part of a larger work, Where the Heart Is, which premiered in 2010. Where the Heart Is is deeply imbued with a sense of place and memories of home as experienced through a young mans recollections. a graduation is a major transformation in anyone’s life and so I have made this piece for the people who will perform it, the third year students. The work is a document of the time we spent together and has a playlist that matches our time in the studio. We only had a short period working together but these students immersed themselves wholeheartedly and unreservedly. any credit for the performance goes to them. We made a piece about the moment in time in which these students find themselves, to show them as they are, with all their fears, desires, fragilities and strengths on display. dance can be a bridge to the human spirit, a physical manifestation of what lies inside a human being, so this is a dance of about a group of individuals about to embark on the next transformation in their lives. Special thanks to Kate harman and hsin-Ju Chiu for their help.

This piece is inspired by the notion of a Palimpsest, that is a manuscript that is wiped clean to be re-written over but still reveals the original script beneath. Writing informed these ideas, as did the way in which movements become inscriptions that imprint upon dancing bodies. I worked collaboratively with the dancers, weaving in their movement compositions and adaptations within the broader structure of the work. Special thanks to the dancers for their contributions, Sarah holland-Batt for her support with our writing investigations and to the production team for helping to bring these ideas to the stage.

This work plays with the idea of imperfect patterns that form clusters and disperse through the space, or crisscross in swirling waves of tulle skirts. It is inspired by the lyrical use of arms found in ballet. It is an abstract work, but hints at fragments of stories between the dancers’ bodies. Inevitably, these moments only appear, to fade away. Thank you to Glenn hughes for generously agreeing to light this work. I also wish to acknowledge the 3rd Year dance performance students for their contribution to the choreographic process through generating movement sequences and sharing their insights. Thank you to QUT dance for this opportunity and to Grant Mclay for his kind assistance.
