The best way to protectagainst Lyme disease is toprevent tick bites.   Here aresome ways to protect yourself:

Shower or bathe within twohours of being outdoors tofacilitate a prompt tickcheck and to remove ticksthat have not attached yet. Do a daily full-body checkfor ticks on yourself andyour children, especially inthe hair, under the arms, inand around the ears, insidethe belly button, behind theknees, between the legsand around the waist. If you find an attached tick, remove it with tweezersimmediately. Removing itwithin 24-36 hours can helpprevent infection.

Wear light coloured long-sleeved shirts and pants tospot ticks more easily.Tuck your shirt into yourpants and pull your socksover your pant legs. Walk on cleared paths orwalkways. Use bug spray containingDEET or Icaridin on your skinand clothing (always followlabel directions).

Do a tick check on youroutdoor gear and your petsas they could carry ticksinside your home. Put dry outdoor clothes in adryer on high heat for 10minutes to kill any remainingticks. If you need to washyour clothes first, hot wateris recommended. If theclothes cannot be washed inhot water, tumble dry on lowheat for 90 minutes or highheat for 60 minutes.

Children & PlayBaby Talk Tips for Youth

The best way children developtheir speech and language isthrough talking and readingwith parents.  Other language-rich activities include pretendplay, outdoor fun or evenplaying board games.

When playing, let your childlead.  Let them play howeverthey like.  Then join in andplay.  Talk about what theyare doing.  Play face to face. Don't ask too manyquestions.  Instead wait a fewseconds for them to commentor ask a question.

The ability to speak and be heard is vital to our everyday lives. And for those who have difficultycommunicating, everyday interactions can pose significant challenges, even preventing them fromasking for help, hearing instructions or saying ‘I love you’.

For older children with speechand language delays anddisorders, a speech therapist ishighly recommended.  But hereare a few tips to help you bettercommunicate with your child:

Stick to one conversation topicat a time.  Avoid quick shifts.Keep sentences short.  Askspecific questions. Give yourchild extra time to respond.  Bean active listener.  Payattention to your child's eye gazeand gestures. Take a guess (e.g.,“Are you talking about yourdog?  Yes? Tell me more!”).

If you have concerns about your child's speech and language development, please contact Info-Social at 8-1-1 .  Find more tips and resources for children and youth on our websiteat centreconnexions.org/community-services/special-needs/speech-language-resources.

Recent research has shown thatbabies actually pay moreattention when you use pitchmodulations, repetition andslower speech.  This is oftenreferred to as "baby talk" orusing a "singsong" voice.

Make sure to sing to your babywhile changing their diaper, feeding them or cuddling them. Describe to them what you aredoing when you are cooking orwhat you see on walks.  Andeven though your little onecannot yet hold a book, makesure to read to them often.
