Auto Start/Stop functionBMW four-cylinder engines with 6-speed manual transmissionautomatically shut down when the vehicle is stationary, for exampleat a red light or in a jam, when the driver activates the clutch andswitches to neutral. The engine restarts as soon as the clutch isactivated again. This innovation signi cantly reduces fuel consumption,especially in city traf c.

Brake Energy RegenerationTo supply a battery with electrical energy,the generator (alternator) is permanentlydriven using engine power, which demandsadditional fuel consumption. Brake EnergyRegeneration means the generator usuallyonly generates electricity when the driver

either takes the foot off the accelerator orbrakes previously unused kinetic energy istransformed in coasting mode into electricalenergy before being fed into the battery. In thisway, electricity is generated while coasting,without consuming fuel.

High-beam assistant supports the driverat night by automatically switching to low beam

Auto Start/Stop display in the Info Displaytells you when the engine has been switchedoff by the Auto Start/Stop function (for exampleat traffic lights or in a traffic queue). The displayis switched off when the engine is restartedautomatically (on all four-cylinder models withmanual transmission).

Optimum Shift Indicator tells you whenshifting to another gear would save fuel. Thesystem indicates whether you should shift up ordown and adapts its recommendations to yourdriving style. When acceler ating, for example,the next shift indication c omes at the pointwhere a higher gear would enable you to continueaccelerating at the same rate, but with reduced

fuel consumption.
