    Instructions

    Wind a bobbin using the automatic bobbin winder with the Silk Fin-ish Thread. Insert the bobbin and cut the bobbin thread tail on thecutter behind the bobbin door. It is now ready for the first stitch.Insert the jeans needle and thread using the automatic threader forspeed and accuracy. Attach the Slide on Tray and the Free HandSystem. The Slide on tray has a release button for easier removal

    and has etched vertical and diagonal guidelines to assist insewing.

    Cut fabric according to pattern except for pieced strips forcenter panel. The pink dot fabric is the main fabric and thebrown fabric is the accent fabric. Cut the purse sides, bottomand ruffle strips from the dot fabric. There will be some dotfabric leftover which will be used to make the front zipperpocket. Cut the brown accent fabric into 2 5 x 8 pieces.This replaces the pieced strips instructions. The third fat quarteris for the lining; cut as directed in the pattern.

    Create a Pieced Zipper PocketAttach the shank to zipper sole #4 on the left side. Sew

    the leftover piece of the pink dot fabric to the right side ofzipper with the straight stitch. Apply the fabric in betweenthe zipper tab and stop. On the other side of the zipper,sew the embroidered ribbon also in between the zipper taband stop. Use Wonder Tape to hold the ribbon in placeand topstitch the ribbon in place with a straight stitch andSole #4.

    Lay the pieced zipper strip over the lower right corner of one ofthe 5 x 8 pieces on the diagonal. Pin in place allowing for agenerous corner pocket. Stitch the zip pocket piece to thebrown fabric with stitch #114. To select stitch #114, press the #

    button 2 times and then the 1 button and the 4 button. Thestitch number appears on the high contrast screen. Adjust thestitch width to 4 using the arrow buttons. Attach optional ac-cessory foot, the Edge Stitch Foot #10, to the machine andstitch guiding the ribbon edge to the blade.

    Move the zipper tab to the center of the pocket. Attachthe shank with sole #20 to the machine. Select Stitch#2 and adjust the Stitch Width to the maximum width.Drop the feed dogs using the button on the right side ofthe machine. Center the zipper coils inside the toes ofsole #20 and stitch a thread stop at the both ends of thezipper.

    Pin the fabric pocket flat to the brown fabric and use apair of non-fabric scissors to cut away the excess zipperand fabric. The thread stops will prevent the zipper tabfrom zipping off until the pieced seams can be sewn.Raise the Feed dogs.

    Customize the Zip Pocket SideStitch the Model NumberOpen the Memory of the machine by pressing the MEM

    button. An empty machine memory will display the num-ber 30, indicating that all 30 spaces are open and readyto receive stitches. If the screen is showing another num-ber, hold in the Clear (CLR) button and MEM button atthe same time to clear the contents.

    With Memory open press the A button to open the Alpha-bet menu. The 380 has 2 alphabets, block and openblock. Select the block style and use the forward andback arrows to scroll through the letters and numbers.Scroll to the letter B and press the MEM forward arrowbutton to insert the letter into memory. The screen should

    flash 29 indicating there are 29 spaces left. Use the leftAlphabet scroll arrow to scroll back in the characters untilthe number 3 is displayed on screen. Press the MEM for-ward arrow button to insert the number into memory. Usethe right Alphabet scroll arrow to scroll forward in thenumbers until the number 8 is displayed on screen. Pressthe MEM forward arrow button to insert the number intomemory. Use the right Alphabet scroll arrow to scroll for-ward in the numbers until the number 0 is displayed onscreen. Press the MEM forward arrow button to insert thenumber into memory.

    Set the shank with sole #20 next to the rib-bon at the bottom edge of the corner pocket.Lay a piece a light weight tear away stabi-lizer under the area to be stitched. Set thesole of the foot next to the ribbon edge tostitch B380. Engage Pattern End to sewonly one B380. Leave the project under thefoot.

    Clear the memory contents and program adecorative stitch pattern to finish the row next to the rib-bon. Insert Stitch #55 and Stitch #60. To selectstitches, press the # button, the 5 button and the 5 but-ton. Stitch number 55 will appear on screen and insertinto memory by pressing the MEM forward arrow.

    Stitch this combination. Clear the memory and press

    the MEM button to close the memory feature.

    Pin the grosgrain ribbon diagonally on the opposite cor-ner and select stitch #107 the blanket stitch. Adjust theStitch Width and Stitch Length to 2. Use the shank withsole #20 and set the needle position to far right. Guidethe toe of the foot to the ribbon edge and stitch bothsides of the ribbon.

    Press the MEM button and clear the previous contents. Stitchescan be entered with defaults, with stitch width and length adjust-ments and with Mirror Image. Insert the following stitches: #33,

    #34, #33, and #34 with Mirror Image engaged. Only the last stitchhas mirror image engaged and to do this press the mirror imagebutton prior to inserting the stitch into memory.

    Stitch this combination on the center of the ribbon using with sole#20. Close memory.

    Buttonholes as Embellishments

    Automatic buttonhole features make sewing buttonholes effortlessand with perfection on any project. Attach the automatic button-hole foot #3A and press the 0 button to select the standard but-tonhole #10. Stitch 2 buttonholes apart in the approximatecenter of the grosgrain ribbon. Adjust the red slide guide on thefoot to 22mm and start the buttonhole at the top of the ribbon.The buttonholes are placed perpendicular on the ribbon. To sewthe first buttonhole, set the length by pressing the quick reversebutton when the slide reaches the red guide of the foot. The auto-matic buttonhole will sew until completion and tie off be sure tokeep the foot control depressed until the machine stops sewing.The BERNINA 3-Series machines also can be powered by thestart/stop button while controlling the speed with the slide speedbar. To sew the second buttonhole, place the foot where the but-tonhole needs to begin and power the machine no need to

    touch the quick reverse button the buttonhole length is remem-bered from the previous stitched buttonhole! Theyll be exactlythe same.

    Cut the buttonholes open using the buttonhole cutter and block.Cut the 12 piece of tulle into 2 6-inch lengths. Thread the tullethrough the buttonholes and tie off. Fluff to fan out the tulle.

    Layer the batting, lining and front with ruffle strips as di-rected by the pattern and stitch using the BERNINA Walk-ing Foot #50 guiding to the mark for a seam allow-ance. Be sure to leave an opening.

    Clip batting from corners, turn and sharpen points with apoint turner.

    Attach Edgestitch Foot #10 to the machine and move theneedle position to close the opening with a straight stitch.

    Quilt the layers by stitching in the ditch using the WalkingFoot. Prepare the ruffle strips as directed by the patternand while the Walking Foot is still attached, stitch the 1/2'rod pocket needed for the handles.

    Decoratively Doodle Quilt the plain panel with a straightstitch and a lengthened oval stitch. Select the straightstitch and sew about an inch. Select stitch #42 and set

    the length to 1. Engage Pattern End and sew one oval.Press the Pattern End button to disengage and selectstitch #1 to sew some straight stitches. Select stitch #42and engage pattern end. The stitch settings are recalled

    and remembered during your sewing session or untilthe Clear Button is pressed. Altered Stitch Memory is aBERNINA exclusive its quite a time saver and conven-ient. Continue alternating between the straight stitch andthe oval stitch until the panel is quilted.

    Turn the bag wrong sides out and stitch the sides with amodified Zig-Zag stitch by machine (and not by hand as

    recommended by the pattern). Attach Edgestitch Foot#10. Select Stitch 2 and change the Stitch Width to 3.1,the stitch length to 1.1 and the needle position to far left.The narrow zig-zag will machine whip-stitch the sidesshut. If the tension needs to be increased, move the toptension dial to 7 and thread the stitch finger of the bobbin

    case. Begin at the top of the bag and stitch tothe fold. Use the Quick Reverse button to knotthe beginning and end of the stitches.

    Box the bottom of the bag as the pattern recom-mends.

    Insert handle rods through rod-pocket and intohandle frame, tighten ball; repeat for the otherside. The hinge of the handle frame sits outsidethe bag and gives the handbag its pretty shapeby controlling the sides fabric.
