    Casing Back-Off Tool

The Casing Back-Off Tool facilitates back-offof uncemented casing stumps at a selectedcoupling location downhole after a sectionhas been cut and retrieved. This processcan effectively be achieved in vertical orhorizontal wells.

The tool features nine sub-assemblies, in-cluding two hydraulic anchors and a torquegenerator. The hydraulic anchors allow theBack-Off Tool to be used in horizontal wellsbecause drill collar weight is not requiredto hold the anchors open. The tool is cy-

cled, and using hydraulic pressure only, thetorque generator and anchors work in tan-dem to breakout and unscrew the casingthreaded connectors with approximatelyone-half turn per cycle. When connectiontorque is sufciently lowered, the Back-OffTool is pulled out of the hole, and a cas-ing spear is run to complete the unscrew-ing and recovery of the casing stump. Athreaded connection remains downholefor the new casing string to be stabbedinto and made up.

Smith Services can also supply subs foraligning the old and new casing strings tofacilitate proper make-up downhole.

Features and Benefts Hydraulic anchor to eliminate need for•drill collar weight to achieve back-off,

making the system ideal for horizontalwells Capable of generating up to 60,000•ft-lbs of torque Leaves a threaded connection for re-•engaging new casing string after worncasing is removed Maintains original casing strength and•integrity Eliminates reduced casing drift di-•ameter resulting from internal casingpatches Eliminates left-hand drill pipe•Eliminates need for overtorquing con-•nections in a left-hand work string ona “blind” back-off from surface

Applications • Replacing worn or damaged sectionsof casing by unscrewing uncementedcasing at a selected coupling locationafter it has been cut and retrieved, invertical or horizontal wells

    External Casing and Tubing Patches

External Casing and Tubing Patch-es are designed to repair damagedcasing or tubing strings quicklyand economically, without reducingthe ID. The casing or tubing stringmust be removed to a point belowthe damaged section. The top ofthe casing or tubing stub is thendressed with a milling tool, and thepatch is run over the casing or tub-ing to a depth sufcient to engagethe slip.

The external casing patch is avail-able in standard and slim holetypes. The slim hole version is ide-al for small, restricted wellbores,or for use below a restriction.

    Conductor Taper Mill

Conductor Taper Mills are used toclean out restrictions in platformor jackup conductor casings. Theirdesign is similar to a normal ta-per mill but with a box connectiondown. This connection is useful forinstalling a smaller diameter ta-per mill, a junk mill or other pilotassembly. Conductor Taper Millscan ream out considerable defor-mation in one pass. Their heavytungsten carbide dressing ensureslong life and fast cutting.

    String Taper Mill

String Taper Mills are ideal forcleaning out damaged casing, lin-ers or tubing, and are also recom-mended for removing keyseats inopen hole. The design tapers fromthe top and the bottom of the mill, allowing reaming operations fromboth directions. Pin down and boxup connections allow the mill to berun in a drill collar string or com-bined with a smaller pilot assemblyto avoid sidetracking when remov-ing obstructions in casing.

Conductor Taper Mills are avail-able in sizes ranging from 15inches to 28 inches, with shingnecks of 9 1 ⁄ 2 inches.

    String Taper Mills are available insizes ranging from 3 1 ⁄ 2  inches to17 1 ⁄ 2 inches, with shing necks of3 1 ⁄ 8 inches to 9 1 ⁄ 2 inches.

Bladed Junk MillBladed Junk Mills are dressed withhigh quality tungsten carbide toensure optimum performance inevery application. Bladed JunkMills are suitable for all types ofgeneral junk milling, as well as theremoval of packers, retainers andsqueeze tools.

Conebuster Mills are ideal forheavy milling such as bit cones, slips and pieces of downhole tools.

A concave cutting face with a thickcutting structure ensures long ser-vice life and efcient milling. Thistype of mill is not recommendedfor cement cleanout.

    Safety Joints

Safety Joints provide an additionallevel of protection against a stucksh securing the entire shingstring into the wellbore by actingas a positive releasing mechanismin the event that the catch toolcannot be released. Safety jointsare available for washover, drillingand shing applications.

Safety joints are sealed by O-ringsto ensure hydraulic integrity whenused with high circulation wash-pipe. Safety joints are designed towithstand high torsional, axial andimpact loadings.

Safety joints are available for abroad range of applications. Con-tact a Smith Services representa-tive for more information.

Casing Scrapers are used to remove par-afn, hardened mud, cement or burrsresulting from tool runs or perforationsfrom the inner surfaces of a tubular. Cas-ing scrapers are particularly useful forcleaning up the casing before setting apacker. A broad range of casing scrapertypes and sizes are available for a vari-ety of applications.

Core-Type Junk BasketCore-Type Junk Baskets are used toretrieve small, oddly-shaped debrisfrom the well bottom by cutting acore from the formation and recov-ering the debris along with the cutcore. This operation can typicallybe applied in soft to medium-softformations.

Boot Baskets are useful in drillingand milling operations to catch de-bris that is too heavy to circulateout of the hole. The boot baskettraps junk by producing a suddendecrease in annular velocity afterthe cuttings pass the larger OD ofthe boot to reach the smaller OD ofthe body and top connection. Boot

The Jet Junk Basket produces acirculating force that is capableof scavenging the most stubbornitems from the hole bottom, in-cluding bit cones, slips, tail chains, shot remnants and other smalldebris. The Jet Junk Basket caneasily be converted to a conven-tional core basket by removing the

jet components and attaching the junk retaining assembly directly tothe top sub.

Features and Benefts Jet nozzles to set up a Venturi•effect, creating a force that lifts

junk from the hole bottom Versatile dual conguration•to provide additional optionswithout extra equipment Open jets that enable the work•string to be pulled dry, im-proving rig oor efciency andsafetyExtended junk sleeves avail-•able for retrieving longeritems

Applications Run in cased or open hole to•retrieve small debris from thewellbore

Equally effective in vertical and• horizontal applicationsUsed as a jet basket in all for-•mations, or as a core basket insoft formations

The Core-Type Junk Basket isavailable in most hole sizes andcan be dressed with a variety ofshoe types depending on forma-tion properties and shing objec-tives.

Boot Basketbaskets should be run as close aspossible to the mill, bit or junkbasket, and can be run in tandemto increase junk retrieval capacity.

Boot Baskets are available in arange of sizes to run with mostbottom hole assemblies.

Cement MillCement Mills are designed forlight milling, such as oat collars, plugs, bridge plugs and retain-ers. An open pattern cuts quicklyon tubular sh and the mill doesnot easily clog with cement or for-mation. Cement Mills are fasterand more durable when cuttingsteel than a steel tooth bit and is

Taper Mills  are designed speci-cally for milling through tight spotsin tubulars. Heavy crushed car-bide dressing increases on-bottomtime, while ground OD and stabi-lizer pads eliminate the risk of cut-ting through the casing.
