August 23, 2012 Island Moon A 11 By Ronnie Narmour [email protected] Three Chords and the Truth Our season is winding down… Well, our season is winding down and Labor Day is just around the corner. I can’t say I’m ready to see all the tourists leave, but I will say it sure will be nice to get our little island back for a while. This has been an especially busy summer in Port A. I understand that tourists are our necessary evil and sustain us, but by the time Labor Day rolls around, there’s not an islander around who’s not ready for a little peace and quiet. The bad news is that the live music schedules will soon start to look, shall we say, less spectacular. The Back Porch only has two more Thursday shows (Cody Angel and Aaron Einhouse) before its Friday and Saturday only. The only thing big on the horizon that I can see around here is the John Prine/ Alejandro Escovedo show on September 23 rd and Ziegfest in early October (Pat Green, Black Joe Louis, Shooter Jennings, Bob Schneider, Jesse Dayton, Ian Moore). The Third Coast Theater in Port A did announced four upcoming shows from now until October (Damn Quails, Tejas Brothers, Bob Livingston and Max Stalling)… those should all be good shows. It may be time to start taking a few more road trips. I tried and failed to get to Austin last weekend for what I knew was going to be a great show. Joe Ely was playing Antone’s with his old 80’s band that included the great Bobby Keys (Rolling Stones, Plastic Ono Band) on sax and David Grissom (John Mellencamp, Storyville) on guitar. Word was that it was spectacular. Regardless, we’ve had a good season of live music this year on the Coastal Bend and I appreciate the efforts of everyone who worked to make that happen (club owners, bands, fans, etc.) It’s a lot of trouble and a risk at best. But, rest assured I’ll do my best to keep you informed of the best shows I can find through the winter… even if it’s the Medicare Band or the PA Rockers. Captain Legendary… I was able to catch Charlie Hagar and the Captain Legendary Band (Baton Rouge, LA) last Thursday at the Back Porch. I gotta say, these boys rocked. They are all good musicians who combine a bunch of different influences to come up with their sound… country, southern rock, roots, blues, bluegrass. I’ve been seeing their name around and had a feeling they were good. They were. Their music has a comfortable feel to it like waiting for your mama to serve up a supper of pork chops and hominy. It just goes down real easy. Billy Snipes, Davin James, Ray T… On Friday night I got to see a few good shows. Billy Snipes played the Tarpon Ice House, Davin James (Kingwood, TX) played the Porch and Ray T and the City Crew (Aransas Pass, TX) played the Flat’s Lounge. Snipes is a Wimberley boy who has just moved to Port A. He’s a happy man that’s been known to get up and dance by himself. He’s got a kind of island groove going on and plays a lot of reggae as well as original tunes. I like Billy a lot and enjoy his upbeat music. Keep an eye out for him, like I say, he lives here now and is a lot of fun. After Billy’s first set I headed over to the Porch to catch Davin James’ second set. Of course he had his steady bass player, Cletus Blakely, with him. I am always amazed at what an excellent guitarist Davin is. I mean he writes great songs and sings them well, but his musicianship never ceases to impress me. He’ll be back on September 29 th . After Davin finished up, I headed over to the Flats for my dose of Ray T. Ray’s leg has totally healed from his motorcycle wreck a few months ago. I even saw a Facebook post of him dancing one heck of a jig. It was pretty funny. All I can say is, following Ray Tijerina on Facebook is a lot of laughs. His mind never stops. Jesse Dayton… Jesse Dayton (Austin by way of Port Arthur, TX) played the Back Porch on Saturday, August 18 th . Dayton is one busy boy. Not only does he keep his honky tonkin’ bastard son of George Jones thing going all over the world, he still finds time to make zombie movies. Go online and check out his soon to be released Zombex with Malcolm McDowell and Cory Feldman. It is written and directed by Jesse Dayton and set in New Orleans and Austin. According to the website, “The story follows Charlie Thibideaux, a locally famous Zydeco player, as he slowly begins to discover why seemingly normal people are starting to turn into the undead, with all signs pointing to a new experimental drug given to post-Katrina survivors.” By the way, Dayton will be back in October for the Ziegfest 2012 at Whataburger Field. He also plays just about every week at the storied Broken Spoke in Austin. This fellow is one Going Jessie. DO NOT MISS LIST This weekend… Tonight (Thursday, August 22 nd ), DO NOT MISS Cody Angel (Levelland, TX by way of Port A) at the Back Porch. Our boy is back home for a few days and this is his only gig. He’s been spending his summer vacation from South Plains College playing pedal steel for the Matt Wayne Band and hasn’t been around. I looked at his schedule and he’s putting on some miles. Cody will be playing with Antone Perez on drums and Mike Guerra on bass. Tomorrow night (Friday, August 23 rd ) Darryl Lee Rush brings his gritty Americana sound to the Back Porch. And on Saturday, August 24 th , there are three good shows to consider. It seems that Oklahoma is invading us. Joe Mack (Tallequah, OK) will be at the Tarpon Ice House and The Damn Quails (Norman, OK) will be at the Third Coast Studio. I saw Joe Mack when he came down with our old CC Magazine buddy, Pete Desopo last year and was totally impressed. Joe plays loops on his guitar and is all over the place. He kind of strikes me as a mad genius. As it turns out, The Damn Quails are friends of his and plan to stay over until Sunday and all get together at the weekly Rockin’ Ricke Open Jam.
