This, that and the other…I may be shooting myself in the foot here, but
the latest plan is to put this column out every week now. I’m flattered that there appears to be a demand and will give it my best shot. I have some sad news. Clyde Smith, the owner of Hook’s B-B-Q in Port A, died last week from a massive stroke. Clyde and his wife Laura moved to Port A from Austin nearly two years ago and proceeded to put their most colorful stamp on our local live music scene until about a month ago when Clyde sold the business to Kody’s owner, Edwin Myers. Laura tells me they will organize a memorial to Clyde sometime in the middle of May. Rest in peace, Clyde. You will be missed. I’ve seen some
phenomenal shows lately. The seasonal debut of Sunset Sounds with Tropical Punch was great. Perry Wing (Rockport, TX), Woodie Lawson and L. Leon Sands put on a well attended, high energy performance to kick off the series. In the coming months look for Alma and Luis, Aqua Vox, Latin Gypsy Combo, Samantha Aiken & the Rodeo Drive Band and Rosewood. The surprise performance of the week goes to Jarrod Birmingham (Victoria, TX) who played the Back Porch on April 13th. I’m not much on “hat acts” but this cowboy has some real talent. But by far, the most outstanding show I’ve seen recently goes to Jimmy LaFave (Austin, TX)
at the Third Coast Theater. His band, featuring David Spencer (Sisters Morales, Tom Gillam) on guitar, Bobby Kallus on drums, Glenn Schuetz on bass and Bryan Peterson on keys.was astonishing. The sold-out crowd gave LaFave three standing O’s. I’ve never seen anyone interpret Dylan more artistically. After the show, I ran into Third Coast owner, Jim Urban, at the Randy McAllister show at the Porch and he was uncharacteristically
spellbound of LaFave’s performance. This was Jimmy’s first performance at the Theater but I’m sure not his last…he made quite an impression. It’s a big weekend for music and merriment in Port A. Austin honky tonker and zombie enthusiast, Jesse Dayton plays the Back Porch on Friday and Mr. Predictable, Larry Joe Taylor (Stephenville, TX) is there on Saturday. Texas accordion master, Ponty Bone (Austin, TX) is at the Tarpon Ice House on Saturday for their first annual Swamp Romp and Gumbo Cook-off. AND IT’S SANDFEST TIME!!! Here’s the line-up: Friday is Brandon E. Busch, The Rich Lockhart Band and Goodnight Avenue. Saturday is Todd Dorn & the Sea Drifters, C Plus, The Bonnie Lang Band and J.T. Coldfire. And on Sunday is Donny Nesloney and Mr. Mo & the Famous Unknowns. Janet Planet did another great job of booking the entertainment for the three day master sand sculpting competition. You will find me working the music tent and hovering around the ice chest full of jello shots as I do every year. And, don’t forget about the great Joe Ely (Austin, TX) show on the 29th at the House of Rock in Corpus. Michael O’Connor (Brenham, TX) will open that show and it will be great. And finally, here’s to me…I haven’t smoked a cigarette in six weeks. Not one puff and I still have my eyebrows (oh ye of little faith.)
DO NOT MISS LIST
Ponty Bone Ponty Bone and the Squeezetones (Austin,
TX) will play the Tarpon Ice House on Saturday, April 21st as part of the first annual Swamp Romp. This event is the brainchild of Port A residents, French Smith and Tanya Fain, who turned this annual Austin event into a very successful festival. They have now brought the tradition to Port A and plan to make it bigger and better every year. This year will feature a gumbo cook-off and a crawfish boil. Sounds like the perfect end to a big day at SandFest.
Ponty Bone is a real life Texas Accordion King. Originally from San Antonio, Bone moved to Lubbock to attend Texas Tech in the early 70’s and joined the Joe Ely Band, where magic was made. Over the course of five albums with Ely, countless tours here and abroad, consistent critical acclaim and collaborations with the likes of The Clash and Linda Ronstadt, the Joe Ely Band forged a new brand of Texas country music with Bone’s accordion as one of the signature instruments.
In 1986, Bone stepped out front and founded the Squeezetones with guitarist, R.C. Banks. Jim Beal, Jr, music writer for the San Antonio Express-News says of Bone, “...the San Antonio-bred accordion icon, the man who helped return the instrument to pop-music respectability through his work with Joe Ely ...fuses blues, zydeco, Cajun and conjunto for a sound that shows the power and the playfulness of roots music and the subtle talents of the band.”
Omar & the Howlers/ Texas Blues Runners
Classic Rock 104.5 in Corpus is sponsoring a free blues concert with Omar and the Howlers, the Texas Blues Runners, the John Cortez Band and Matt Hole and the Hot Rod Gang at Brewster Street Ice House on Saturday, April 28th. Omar Dykes (Austin, TX) is best described as Wolf Man Jack meets Howlin’ Wolf at Jimmy Reed’s house. He’s one of the original Mississippi Hoo Doo Men with a growl as deep as the Delta. He has recorded 19 albums since 1980. My favorite is the one he did with Jimmy Vaughan entitled On the Jimmy Reed Highway. He did garner some national fame when his 1987 record, Hard Times in the Land of Plenty (Columbia Records) managed to get on MTV rotation and sold 500,000 copies. Omar is a mainstay in the Austin
blues scene and is very popular in Europe. He recorded a live album in Amsterdam in 1992 entitled Live at the Paradiso.
The Texas Blues Runners live all over the state of Texas now, but formed in their hometown
of Wichita Falls in 2008. Keyboard and Hammond B-3 player, Charlie Rouzer, lives in Port Aransas and played with the PA Rockers all winter. The Runner’s guitarist, Mike O’Neil has played with Delbert McClinton, Jessie Colin Young, Huey Lewis, Freddie King, Kingfish, and many others both in studio and on tour. The bass player, Steve Crane lives in Austin and has played with Glenn Frey. He has appeared with Savoy Brown, Sly and The Family Stone, Journey, Blues Image, Bloodrock, The Five Man Electrical Band, The Grassroots, Arrowsmith, Peter Frampton, Charlie Daniels Band, REO Speedwagon, Steppenwolf, and Foghat.
The Blues Runners have worked stages with Pat Travers, Edgar Winter, Buddy Guy, Taj Mahal and Los Lonely Boys. They have recorded one album, Somebody Bring Me Some Water of all original material.
And that’s the truth!
