15thBRUNEI BOOK FAIR 2014

Book, media of knowledge was the theme of this years book fair organised annually byDewan Bahasa dan Pustaka Brunei. It was held from 28 Feb to 10 Mar at the InternationalConvention Centre in conjunction with the Brunei 30 th National Day celebrations.Approximately 100 booths including 49 participants from Brunei Darussalam, the ASEANBook Publishers Association, Oman, Jordan, Egypt, and Syria.

H.E. Pehin Orang Kaya Pekerma Laila Diraja Dato Seri Setia Hj Hazair Hj Abdullah, Ministerof Culture, Youth and Sports in his Opening Speech said the countrys publishers shouldproduce book genres that can attract readers of all ages and hence help develop thepublishing industry. Local publishers are to be aware of latest global trends, including thestyle, format and quality to meet market demand. Further, authors are recommended todevelop creative writing skills and produce books and value added products containing local

values.

The Minister also presented prizes to authors of 2013s bestseller books and bestpublishers. DBP Bruneis 2013 Bestsellers are Integriti Dan Kewibawaan DalamPerkhidmatan Awam: Satu Pandangan; Syair Pertabalan Sultan Ahmad Tajuddin andBacaan Gergasi Alaiku Sayang Siri 1-Himpunan Cerita Fantasi Puteri Dan Wanita. Prizesfor Best Publishers in 2013 went to the State Muftis Office, Islamic Dawah Centre, DewanBahasa dan Pustaka Brunei and the Brunei History Centre.

BLA MEETINGS

Charity Bazaar Organising Committee meetings were held on 1 Mar and 7 Mar 2014and an EXCO meeting was held on 18 March 2014.

BLA TRAINING COMMITTEE MEETING

A meeting was held on 8 march 2014 at NLB Singapore with Ms Gee Miaw Miin,Senior Manager, NLB Academy and on 18 March 2014 with members to finalise

Module 1 of CLAIMS.

IFLA BSLA CONVENING

26 participants from 14 countries attended the trainingworkshop on Building Strong Library Associationsorganised by IFLA and supported by the National Libraryof Indonesia. It was held from 4-7 March 2014 at the SariPan Pacific Hotel and National Library of Indonesia inJakarta. It was conducted by 4 trainers and supported by 5personnel from IFLA. A technical meeting was held on the3 Mar 2014.

while the closing was performed by Ms Jennefer Nicholson, IFLA Secretary General who alsopresented certificates to all the participants. Pn Nellie on behalf of the participants thanked IFLA forinviting the participants, to Ibu Sri Sularsih for the excellent arrangements made for the workshop andstaff of the National Library of Indonesia for their technical and secretarial support.

Ibu Sri Sularsih, Director National Library of Indonesia also hosted a Welcoming Dinner at theNational Library with Indonesian cultural performances of dance and music.

Workshop contents

The 4 day workshop consisted ofpresentations by the trainers andparticipants, a series of miniworkshops, case studies andinteractive discussions.

Day 1BSLA programme objectives,values and ethics, role of libraryassociations, governance oflibrary associations, partnershipsand collaborations.

Day 2Concepts and steps for planningstrategically, strategies for

obtaining support for their proposal within their association and externally, concept of advocacy andstrategies for advancing for their proposal, range of project funding sources, concept of risk, commonrisks and how to manage them, process for developing a proposal for an association priority issue

and its application,

Day 3IFLA resources and training materials that could be useful for their proposal.

Day 4Strategies for determining the success of a project, process for developing an action plan and itsapplication for their proposal, process for moving a proposal to a project and the support availablefrom IFLA, Strategies for taking forward a regional goal

BLA CHARITY BAZAAR

BLA successfully held a Charity Bazaar on

Sunday 9 March 2014 at the open space in

front of the Royal Regalia Museum in the

capital. The aim was to raise funds for BLA

in order to organise various professional

development activities for its members. After

months of planning and preparation our

efforts paid off with the participation of 66

vendors.

The success was made possible with the

support of a fixie group, a Zumba group,

HEART team and twelve volunteers and

parents who came with their children who

had such fun and enjoyed the games .

BLA wishes to acknowledge with our deepest thank you to our generous sponsors namely JasraHarrison, Bshah Fitness Studio, and the ExecutiveBoard members for their generosity in providingprizes for the various games.

Before this BLA successfully organised two car boot sales on 1 June 2009 and 3 January 2010 and aJogathon on 14 June 2009 to raise funds for the Associations activities.

UNIVERSITAS INDONESIA CENTRAL LIBRARY

Pn Nellie visited the UI Campus Depok on 3 March 2014 including the Library Science Faculty andthe Central Library which is one of the biggest university libraries in Asia.

The Universitas Indonesia Central Library is an integrated system that provides a comprehensiveaccess to UI's library holdings across the individual faculties and disciplines to facilitate coordinationand communication. The Central Library is an important department of the University's centraladministration through which the libraries collaborate in the areas of digital acquisitions andcollections, information technology, high-density storage, and preservation.

The Central Library's collection of over 2 million books includes its notable collections of UI homegrown publications which are its Documentation and Archives; Scholarly Journals, Open AccessJournals, Makara Science series and Video Online. The Central Library also offers access to

extensive electronic resources and its digital library through the use of Community of Science,Mendeley, Refworks and Zotero on e-journals, databases, statistical data, images and digital maps.

BLA ROADSHOW

BLA Roadshow as held on Thursday 13 March 2014 at the DBP Tutong District Library and attendedby over 80 librarians and teacher librarians from schools and government departments in the Tutongand Belait districts. The roadshow which commenced at 130pm was to publicise BLAs role andactivities and to update and share with members and librarians of current LIS developments. Theprogramme was as follows:
