1. Company History
P&O Ferrymasters is one of the leading European providers of tailor-
made road and intermodal transportation and logistics solutions.
P&O Ferrymasters began life as a haulage company in Preston, Lanca-
shire, in 1953 and initially specialised in moving freight from the UK to
Belfast under the name of Northern Ireland Transport Services.
The company expanded and moved to its headquarters in Ipswich in
1977 as its business extended to cover mainland Europe. By the mid-
1980s an association with European Ferries in Felixstowe led to a joint
venture with North Sea Ferries.
It then became part of the P&O Trans European Group until it was
demerged in 2002. Since 2006 P&O Ferrymasters has been part of
P&O Ferries, which is owned by the Dubai World group.
Now P&O Ferrymasters is a leading European player with 530 staff
employed in 22 key operational bases spread across 12 European
countries – Belgium, France, Germany, Holland, Hungary, Ireland, Italy,
Poland, Romania, Spain, Ukraine and the United Kingdom.
Bas Belder has been the Managing Director of P&O Ferrymasters since
June 2007.
