$Solar energy is energy derived from the sun. One type of solar energy is called passive solar.
Passive Solar Energy systems use the heat from the sunlight to heat an object that can
capture, store, and transport the heat. Most often these objects are containers of water or
small pipes of water. For instance, some people will put dark barrels of water in the south
facing windows of their house. On a sunny day, the barrels heat up. In turn, the barrels can
warm the room through the night. Another example of using passive solar energy is when
some Alaskan Native elders throw the dark ash from the woodstove over the snow in the
garden in the spring. The wood ash easily absorbs sunlight and causes the snow to rapidly
melt beneath, and gardens be started earlier in the season.
Another kind of solar energy, photovoltaics (PV’s) is a system of generating electrical power by
converting solar radiation into direct current electricity. Silicon cells placed together in large
flat panels generate electricity when exposed to sunlight. This type of solar panel system
already supplies some villages with electricity directly from sunlight. While winters in Alaska
lack sunlight, there is often an abundance of sun in the summer. The challenges to using
solar panels in Alaska include how to store solar during the months that have less solar
potential. The energy is usually stored in large low voltage batteries. One way to optimize
Alaskan use of solar energy may involve using the summertime abundance of sun to fuel
electric vehicles like ATVs or boat motors, or remote cabins and homes. Centralized
charging stations using solar panels, and/or storage stations may be able to benefit the whole
community. They would provide power from the sun sustainably, cleanly, and would be less
expensive than diesel fuel.
Worldwide, solar technologies are advancing rapidly from producing thinner panels (even
photovoltaic paint) to building huge power plants that focus the sun's rays to amplify the

in villages, the power of the sun may become more important and useful even in Alaska!

In the space provided, brainstorm as many words as you can that connect to the sun and/or solar energy. Use your imagination. Think of the sun through the senses: sight, hearing, smell, taste and touch. Or, think of words that describe the sun (adjectives), or what the sun does (verbs). The more words you can list, the better! The words will be used in the 5th activity. $?????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

"#$%&$#'(!$Discussion for Students and Teachers: In order to figure out whether enough sun reaches your area to covert to solar energy at different times of year, you can research available charts or measure it yourselves over time. "Insolation" (incoming solar radiation levels) represents daily average solar energy. This is usually expressed in kilowatt-hours per square meter per day (kW-hr/m2/day), or as an amount of equivalent hours of "standard sun". NASA maintains an extensive database on insolation for most locations in the world. In today's non-concentrated Photovoltaic (PV) systems for homes, less than 21% of the sun’s light can be converted to electricity feasibly. This is because of the limited efficiency of any PV power system at this time. Further Inquiry: With a partner, choose one of the projects below:
1. Research and report on “Insolation Maps or Charts” for your local area. You can start by looking at the following websites:
http://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/IOTD/view.php?id=1355 http://www.nrel.gov/gis/solar.html Then, answer the following questions using extra paper as needed: Is solar energy a plausible renewable energy resource in your local area? What are the possible challenges and the benefits of installing solar panels in your community? ________________________________________________________________________

________________________________________________________________________
What would be the best ways to use solar energy in your community? Be thoughtful and imaginative in your responses (For example, could you use solar panels to generate electricity in the summer for electric ATV’s that you would design!) ________________________________________________________________________
________________________________________________________________________
________________________________________________________________________
2. Locate a location that you think is suitable for future solar panels. Make
drawings/take photographs and record observations of the areas for potential that shows the shadows from trees, mountains or buildings that might interfere with direct sunlight at certain times of day. Then, calculate the loss of sunlight time from the shadows. Find another suitable location and compare the findings.
Broaden your Inquiry:
Calculate the distances from the proposed panels to the grid or home in order to minimize wiring and transfer of energy loss. _________________________________________________________________

Estimate the initial investment of setting up solar panels. Compare this to the cost of using diesel generators. Evaluate the time to pay off the initial investment.$????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????
