PENTECOST SUNDAY - May 20, 2018

Pentecost

We’re all familiar with our own birthdays, and we celebrate them because they mark the day of the year in which we entered into this life. But do we know we also have a second birthday? The reason why it’s because you and I are a part of the body of Christ. Pentecost is the church’s birthday and ours as well, and like any birthday it is a reason to celebrate. The word Pentecost is Greek and it means “50th day”, fifty days after Easter Sunday we come to celebrate the coming of the Holy Spirit upon the Apostles and also their followers and the beginning of their earthly ministry to make disciples of all nations. It’s interesting to note which is also a Jewish holiday that the Jewish people use to celebrate the end of Passover. They celebrate the gift of the law to Moses at Mt. Sinai on this day. But as Catholics we celebrate the birth of our church on this day. This weekend the Catholic Church celebrates Pentecost one of the most im-portant feast days of the year that concludes the Easter Season and celebrates the beginning of the church. The symbols of Pentecost are the flame, wind and the dove which represents the Holy Spirit. Also, the color of the Pentecost is red and the vestments worn are red in color. In the Gospel one of the very distinctive verses mentioned that Jesus first appeared to them and the Apostles were behind locked doors for fear of the Jews. Even when Jesus appears for a second time a week later the doors were locked again as He stood in their midst. When He first appeared to them a week earlier He said to them, Peace be with you and He said, “receive the Holy Spirit”. Wouldn’t you think that the courage, joy and confidence of these Apostles would have taken a quantum leap. But yet here we find them behind locked doors. Doors being locked has also played an important role throughout the story of salvation. There are a number of passages throughout the Scriptures. One passage that comes to mind is found in Matt 6, Jesus says when you pray, go your room “close the door” and pray to the Father in secret. Not out of fear but to be in a quiet place to better listen to the calm whisper of God who lives with us and within us. On this Pentecost Sunday it’s a good reminder that Jesus is not hindered by closed or locked doors. It should remind us that He is determined to overcome every obstacle that might prevent Him from entering especially the door of our Hearts. When He comes in He brings us the “Holy Spirit” so that He and God the Father can make their home in us. There are some questions perhaps we can ask ourselves to reflect upon during this Pentecost week. ~ Is the door of my mind and heart open to the full presence and power of Jesus’ Love and Life? ~ Is the door of my mind and heart really open to – spouse, children, relatives, friends, co-workers, fellow parishioners and even to our neighbors? ~ Whom have I locked out of my life? The poor, the aged, the ill, handicapped, homeless, lonely and the unemployed. ~ Yes, and even someone whom I judge to be more of a burden then a blessing. The Holy Spirit is a gift to us as promised by Jesus at the Last Supper. It is the gift of the Holy Spirit, who guides us to live the life of love and about love. It’s the gift of the Holy Spirit who sanctifies the church and guides it to teach faith and morals throughout all generations. Now as the faith community we are empowered to carry on the work of Jesus in the world. The Spirit is given to all, not simply a few, empowering us to spread

the message of justice, mercy and forgiveness through our example.

Let us not love with words or tongue but with actions and in the truth ( 1 John 3:18).

Peace, Deacon David
