South Australia prides itself on the strength of our enduring and diverse relationship with Asia, especially in the areas of commerce and education.

Our OzAsia Festival, now celebrating its third year, also plays a signifi cant role in ensuring our cultural and artistic ties are treasured and nurtured, and that they continue to develop and prosper.

Th is unique and dynamic Festival celebrates our creative links with Asia in all its manifestations – from food to fi lm, in dance and theatre, through visual arts and music.

Th e Festival’s growing status and reputation was highlighted by the presence of Australia’s Prime Minister, Kevin Rudd, who addressed last year’s OzAsia Symposium.

I’m delighted to confi rm that the keynote speaker at this year’s Symposium will be Nobel Peace Prize winner and President of the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste, José Ramos-Horta.

For more than three decades, President Ramos-Horta patiently and delicately persisted in his quest to bring freedom, democracy, independence and – most of all – the hope of prosperity to East Timor.

Th e OzAsia Festival’s now traditional opening – the spectacular and free Moon Lantern Festival – will once again light up Elder Park, where families and communities will take centre stage to welcome in a fortnight that entertains as well as informs.

Th is year’s OzAsia Festival promises to be another enriching and vibrant celebration of Australian and Asian culture.

I look forward to seeing you there.

Named aft er a Bengali word meaning ‘carrier’, bahok explores the ways in which the body carries national identity and a sense of belonging.

Th e eight dancers from diverse cultures, traditions and dance backgrounds – Chinese, Korean, Indian, Slovakian, South African and Spanish – act out their att empts to communicate through dramatic dance and spoken vocabulary as they wait out their airport limbo. Th eir destination is unknown.

Khan joins forces with long-time musical collaborator Nitin Sawhney, renowned for his multi award-winning compositions, who has created an original score for bahok.

Originally a collaboration between the Akram Khan Company and the National Ballet of China, bahok is dance and storytelling inspired by the exploration of cultural identity in a globalised world.

Georg Büchner’s Woyzeck remains one of the most enigmatic and infl uential works of modern theatre. Korea's Sadari Movement Laboratory has created a new dynamic interpretation of the play that illuminates the original work's hidden potential and develops a new language in physical theatre. Using wooden chairs as a changeable metaphor the performers both shape the dramatic space and reveal the character’s emotional states, while Astor Piazzola’s dynamic tango becomes the throbbing pulse of the drama.

Woyzeck is a timeless exploration of human jealousy and dehumanisation. As the soldier Woyzeck lashes out at his proletarian circumstances, a grotesque parade of society marches around him in oblivion.

Founded in 1998 by company director Do-wan Im aft er studying at the Ecole de Jacques Lcoq in Paris, Sadari Movement Laboratory is comprised of the creative contributions of all company members.

From her many performances of Th e Burlesque Hour around the globe to OzAsia Festival’s Chika last year and Dis-Oriental in 2007, Yumi Umiumare’s electrifying performance style is in demand all over the world.

In this bold new work, Umiumare is set to detonate her extraordinary vision from the international to the other-worldly as she thrusts us into the twisted corridors of the un-living. At times brutally visceral, the performance is counterbalanced with the purity of digital painting produced live with her collaborating artists, Bambang Nurcahyadi and Naomi Ota.

En Trance extends even further Umiumare’s diverse dance vocabulary, plummeting into the cracks where the spirit and the body are propelled into another existence. Umiumare takes us from unsett ling moments of physical extremity to magical images of refl ective serenity.

FRI 9 OCT 7.30PMPANKH*Director: Sudipto Chatt opadhyay (India 2009) FeatureTh e practise of casting children in roles contrary to their gender is one peculiar to the Indian fi lm industry.
