Dear friend! Today, we are witnessing a historical event: the opening of European space for the Ukrainian people. Visa-free travel is the second symbol (after the Maidan) for the new generation who create changes for the benefit of flourishing Ukraine.

We understand: in order to make Ukraine stronger, develop its potential, bring wellbeing and multiply respect for our country in the world, we have to learn from the success of others. That’s why open communication with democratic countries of the world is so important for us. We have common values and common future.

As young leaders, we change the perception of Ukraine for the better when visiting other countries and establishing direct contacts with locals. The free travel opportunities opening with the abolition of visas to the EU allow young people to bring the best ideas and examples to Ukraine and make them happen in our country tomorrow.

For the new generation of Ukrainians ready to assume responsible leadership, nothing is impossible. Born free, they are capable of changing not just Ukraine but the whole world. They have to work very hard to do that. If we all will give our time, efforts and love to our country today, in just a few years, we will see a new Ukraine – the country in which we dream to live.

CREATING OURSELVES — CREATING UKRAINE!

Components of the expedition:

Cognitive 50%Аdvocating 20%Communicative 30%(cultural diplomacy)

The goalsof our Expedition are to advocate Ukraine abroad and study models of EU’s public institutions, decision making mechanisms and examples of rational organization of infrastructure and everyday life by meeting with representatives of European institutions, central and local public authorities, think tanks, educational organizations and NGOs.

It took centuries for Belgium, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Germany, France and Austria to develop their statehood, but we don’t have that much time!

Ukrainian Academy of Leadership is an example of how Ukrainian society meets historical challenges and raises the new generation! We unite Ukraine, having students from all regions, and create space for development of a viable society today!

“In the past two years, a new generation woke up in Ukraine. This is a generation of Ukrainians full of energy, responsibility and action. A generation where everyone trusts everyone, with dedication arising not just from sentiments but from the sense of responsibility and conscientious will to turn our country into the space of freedom and dignity. This is a generation of Ukrainians who dream together about a strong and wealthy Ukraine. We must give this generation tools to make their dreams come true. Our goal is to ensure that values that unite us become daily instruments of decision making. In the maze of contradictions existing in Ukraine, values are what can unite us. We want Ukrainian society to become stronger and of greater benefit to the humanity. In fact, we can do much more interesting and useful things”.

Roman Tychkivskyi,Head of Ukrainian Academy of Leadership

The expedition started in Brussels, the city where most institutions of united Europe are located, on 11 May, the day when Ukraine was granted the long-awaited visa-free regime. During two days, the students attended 15 meetings with representatives of European institutions, public authorities, think tanks, educational organizations, media and NGOs, including member of the European Parliament Rebecca Harms, members of European Parliament committees, Ukraine Ambassador to the EU Mykola Tochytskyi, Executive Director of the Brussels Liaison Office of Ukrainian Analytical Centers Olena Prystaiko, and many others.

“The expedition is a very apt word to define the format of this event and its three key objectives: cognitive, advocating and communicative. The perception of goal is like the team’s disposition before an important sporting game. It’s when you’re traveling not for the sake of traveling, not to get another stamp in your passport. It’s when you realize that you have the whole country behind you”.

ULA Lviv“Today, the Netherlands is perhaps the most comfortable country in Europe for cyclists. However, it has not always been so: their struggle for comfortable use of and riding on bicycles lasted for decades. And today, citizens of this country enjoy personal freedom, but on top of that, feel responsibility for their future and the future of their descendants”.

“There are many things that will come handy and many people who will support you. All you have to do is to make the first step”.

“Europe is communication, search of common winning strategy for all participants of communication, proactive stance on overcoming today’s challenges, a look into the future and huge daily work. It is not a paradise land, not a picture from the TV screen but a difficult school of coexistence of very different people for the sake of common peaceful future”.

“The openness, transparency, simplicity and absence of blood relation greatly improve the chances of creating a cool, interesting city”.

Dmytro Domanskyi,ULA Mykolaiv student, during the meeting

with Bart Somers in Mechelen, Belgium

“In 1989’s Berlin, I realized how important freedom is. I had the same feeling in Kyiv’s Maidan. The moments like these motivate for implementation of changes in a democratic way on the basis of discussions. Tell everyone how proud we are of changes with which our city lives. And although everyone is a personality who has own identity, we have a lot in common”.

ULA Mykolaiv“In my opinion, expeditions like this are an excellent example of how Ukraine can tell about itself. It’s hard to imagine better diplomats for the country than these bright young people. At the same time, we are very pleased that our country finds itself on their radar. This cooperation does benefit both our countries”.

Luc Jacobs, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary

of the Kingdom of Belgium to Ukraine

“Today, thanks to the world wide web, people have access to any information in the world. So, one would think, use this information to the fullest: read, study, analyze. Just don’t copy it, for copied information doesn’t have your thoughts, your work. The University of Leuven has zero tolerance of plagiarism. If any duplication is found in your work, it means that you have violated the university’s values and must leave it. As simple as that.

“I’d like to believe that in the future, our universities will rise to the level of the Catholic University of Leuven, becoming a place to raise free thinkers capable of changing our world for the better”.

For his descendants, and descendants of his descendants will continue to live on it. ULA Kyiv “Despite the differences in mentality, there are obvious things in which I wish Ukraine were similar with EU states. The attitude toward people with special needs, bike paths and many other important and convenient things. But that’s just something that lies on the surface. These, seemingly insignificant implementations and differences are the consequences of much bigger reforms – social, economic, political, reforms in mentality. Without that, people in Ukrainian cities will continue to walk on bike paths, not even noticing and not understanding why they are needed”.

Bohdan Paskar, ULA Kyiv student

“The understanding of one’s own culture, knowledge of other cultures and ability to use their differences are extremelyimportant today, when Ukraine strives for becoming a full-fledged part of European community”.

Dmytro Oliinyk,ULA Kyiv manager

“The conflict in the East may last for years, but that doesn’t mean you have to wait. You have to act. You are important, because you are those who can change the course of history”.

Hans Falenski, advisor of the CDU/CSU faction in the Bundestag

“By 2025, Germany plans to abolish nuclear power generation and switch to alternative energy sources. I have realized that in Germany, responsibility for changing the common space is borne mostly by the government, while in our country, it is the business of activists. But in my opinion, this is a good thing, because it indicates that any changes begin with the simple desire to change something. First of all, these deeds make us change our mentality and expand the worldview. I believe that sooner or later, the same attitude toward the environment will prevail in Ukraine”.
