2nd International Symposium onPropionibacteria and

Bifidobacteria: Dairy andProbiotic Applications

Scope of the SymposiumThe second international Symposium on bifidobacteria and propionibacteria will focus on basic and applied aspects of thesebacteria. Though these bacteria are quite different they play importantroles in human well-being and are important in food and industrialmicrobiology, in human gut flora and as probiotics. This conference provides a unique venue for scientists and industry to present and analyze the most recent findings in this rapidly developingmicrobial field. The conference will take full advantage of recenttechnological and conceptual advances to integrate and markedlyadvance our understanding of these two important groups of bacteria.

Short historyThe background for the initiation of this series of symposia was due to the fact that researchers working on dairy propionibacteria felt a needfor a common meetingplace and therefore the 1st internationalsymposium on dairy propionibacteria was held at Rennes, France in May 1995. The 2nd symposium on dairy propionibacteria was hosted by Cork, Ireland in May 1998. The 3rd Symposium on Propionibacteriatook place in Zürich, Switzerland in July 2001.Before the 4th symposium, the scientific committee and the organising committee decided that this symposium should not cover onlypropionibacteria but also bifidobacteria, both GC-rich organisms. Thisintroduced the 1st International symposium on propionibacteria and bifidobacteria which took place at St. Malo, France in June 2004. This is the background for the 2nd international symposium on propionibacteriaand bifidobacteria.

Scientific programmeThe scientific programme will include plenary lectures, short oral communicationsand poster sessions covering the total field of these important microorganisms. During plenary lectures, speakers will provide a broad coverage of importantscientific breakthroughs and the rapid new developments in this field.

All communications will be organized into four sessions:First session: Opening sessionSecond session: Gene transfer and molecular techniques – genomicsThird session: Metabolic functions and industrial applicationsFourth session: Probiotic effects and mechanisms

1. Opening sessionFirst session: June 5, 2007: 1800Invited speakers. Dr. Fabrizio Arrigoni and Dr. Sylvie Lortal

2. Gene transfer and molecular techniques – genomicsSecond session: June 6, 2007, Morning, afternoon

Invited speakers. Dr. Helene Falentin, Dr. Dan O’SullivanTopics for short presentationsGenetic manipulationVectors and transformationEvolution and strain/species diversityMolecular methods of detection and identification
