Create 2 playing chips. Each player will place them at

opposite ends of the field. Use 3 dice or a deck of cards with the face cards removed (keep the Aces to use as 1s). Player 1 will

roll the dice twice (or pick 6 cards) and create two 3-digit

numbers to write a subtraction problem.

Example: 466 -321 On their recording sheets, both players will show how to solve

the problem. Players will compare answers to see if it is

correct. If Player 1 was correct, he gets to move 10 yards on the

game board. If he was not correct, he must move back 10 yards. Repeat for Player 2. The first player to make it from their

end zone to the other is the winner.

Science

Build your own Xylophone

Materials: •Cardboard tubes (paper towel rolls, toilet paper rolls, wrapping paper rolls) •Rubber bands •Yarn, ribbon, etc.

Directions: •Cut your tubes so you have 5 different lengths (about 1″ difference in length between each tube). •Start with your two smallest tubes. Put one rubber band around one tube, twist it (so it makes a figure 8) and put the other loop around the next tube. Hold them in place and put another rubber band around the two tubes the same way. •Then, add the next biggest tube using the same method with the rubber bands. Repeat the process for all your tubes. •Next, use your yarn or ribbon to weave in and out of your tubes for decoration. You can run ribbon through the largest tube, and tie a knot so you can wear it around your neck.

Sidewalk Chalk Fractions Materials: 1 Die, Sidewalk Chalk Directions: 1. Roll a die and draw that number of triangles. 2. Roll again and draw that number of circles. 3. Roll again and draw that number of squares. 4. Roll again an draw that number of rectangles. 5. Make a Fraction Key with 1 triangle, 1 circle, 1 square, and 1 rectangle 6. Count up the total number of shapes you drew. That number will be your denominator (bottom number) for all your fractions. 7. Next, find the numerator (top number) for each shape you drew and write that next to each shape in your Fraction Key. See Example:

Subtraction Battle *This game is a twist on the classic card game of WAR.* Materials: Deck of playing cards and 2 players Directions: 1. Remove the face cards from a deck of playing cards, but keep the Aces. Aces will count as 1s. 2. Deal out the entire deck of cards equally between both players, keeping them face down. 3. On the count of 3, each player will turn over the top card from their individual pile and place it face up in the middle. The objective is to be the first player to correctly find the difference between both cards. For example 5 and 7. The first player to answer 2 (7-5=2) gets to keep both cards. *If both players say the correct answer at the same time, rock, paper, scissors can be used as a tie breaker or the traditional WAR tie breaker may be used. 4. Repeat the process until one player runs out of cards. Remember to follow good Sparta Way sportsmanship! =)

Day 5- Math Activity Options

Game 1- Water Balloon Number SPLASH!

Materials: water balloons (or sponge and bucket of water) Players: 1-2 Directions: Fill water balloons and use a permanent marker to number them 1 through 20. Have a grown up write 20 addition and/or subtraction equations (1 matching equation for each numbered balloon) on a large concrete surface using sidewalk chalk. For example, the equation 15-7 will match with the balloon marked 8. To play, grab a balloon, find the matching number, and splash the balloon on the corresponding number. You can also set a timer and play Beat the Clock.

OR Split up the balloons and race against a friend to be the first to find all your matching equations and Splash your balloons. *If you don’t have water balloons, you can use a bucket and sponge(s) instead. Have a grown up call out a number from 1-20 and find the matching equation written in chalk. Splash the sponge on the corresponding number. You will need to soak the sponge again before solving the next equation.

Game 2- Splash Math

Materials: water balloons (or sponge and bucket of water) and flash cards Players: 2-4 Directions: Fill up as many water balloons as you would like for this game. Have a grown up hold up a flashcard and call out the answer. Then, grab a balloon (or damp sponge) and play catch with a partner, tossing the balloon the number of times equal to the problem's solution (if the flashcard reads "2 + 3," toss it 5 times). Players who drop the balloon get a point (and get wet). The player with the fewest points wins. *If you don’t have flashcards, you can use a permanent marker to write equations on the balloons and toss the balloon the number of times equal to the problem’s solution written on the balloon. ---------------------------------------------------------- *Take it Further with Spelling: Use this idea to practice spelling words. Have a grown up call out one of your spelling words. Play catch, tossing a balloon back and forth as you take turns spelling each letter of the word until the word is complete. Players who drop the balloon get a point (and get wet). The player with the fewest points wins. Repeat for 20 spelling words.
