DID YOU KNOW….. that one of the ‘signature features’ of St. Andrew’s are the bells sounding from the ‘Ave Maria Tower’? The bells sounding from a Catholic church are an invitation to ‘sanctify the hours’ of the day, that is, to live with a prayerful remembrance of God and the things of God, and to reflect that each time we hear the bells, we are one hour closer to eternity. Many folks living in the neighborhood of the church have shared with us how much they enjoy the pealing of the bells heard at different times of the day, and with season hymns played on the bells. In fact, several have told us that the bells sounding from St. Andrew’s Church are one of the things that attracted them to this neighborhood, reminding them of their childhood homes back East or in Europe! The bells peal five minutes before each Mass, as an invitation to unite – at least in prayer – with those going to Mass; the tolling bell is rung at the conclusion of a Funeral Mass, as the casket/cremains leave the church; ‘joy bells’ are pealed as a new bride and groom leave the church, and a hymn is usually played on the bells at the conclusion of Sunday Masses, as well as during Processions! At 3:00 every afternoon, the bells peal for the ‘Hour of Great Mercy’ and invite us to pray the simple prayer: “JESUS, I trust in You!” But the most important message of the bells is the Angelus, which, of course, is rung at Noon and at 6:00 PM (We omit the 6:00 AM ringing of the Angelus, out of consideration of our non-Catholic neighbors!) The Angelus prayer is a beautiful salutation to the Incarnation, and it is wonderful that more and more of our parishioners are returning to (or learning for the first time) this beautiful devotion in order to ‘sanctify the hours’ of the day! Did you know that Edgar Allan Poe, the 19th Century American writer, who inquiring about the meaning of the bells sounding from a nearby Catholic church each day, penned a beautiful poem entitled, “Hymn of the Angelus” “At morn, at noon, at twilight dim, Maria, thou hast heard my hymn! In joy and woe, in good and ill, Mother of God, be with me still. When the hours flew brightly by, And not a cloud obscured the sky, My soul, lest it should truant be, Thy grace did guide to Thine and thee. Now, when the storms of fate o’ercast Darkly my present and my past, Let my future radiant shine With sweet hopes of thee and Thine.” If you would like to know more (or re-learn) about the Angelus, copies are available at the entrances of the church and in the Parish Office!

Our Joan Martin reports that the earthquake which struck Haiti this past weekend, while devastating the epi-center, west of the Capital of Port-aux-Prince, did no significant damage in the area of our sister-parish, Mole St-Nicolas, located in the NW part of Haiti. While there were tsunami warnings, there was no incident in Mole St-Nicolas. Tropical storm “Fred” two weeks ago brought heavy rain, but again, no damage in the Parish. They are anxiously awaiting the development and trajectory of hurricane “Grace”. Poor Haiti – please pray for the people of this impoverished nation and our fellow believers in our sister-parish!

PRAYER FOR THE CANONIZATION OF PADRE KINO

Almighty and merciful Father, Lord of the Nations, You inspired your servant, Eusebio Francisco Kino, with a love for the Peoples of the Americas, and filled him with selfless zeal for the Gospel. Your love for the desert Peoples of the Americas came to life in him, forming him into a bridge-builder between peoples and cultures – a prophet of justice in service to their lives and dignity. We thank You for the heavenly favors bestowed upon him in his lifetime of service. Inspired by his example, and, we ask that You open our hearts to continue his legacy of peace and loving service today. We hope in his intercession before Your heavenly throne, and we beg You to grant the petitions we now bring before You. . . Also, if it be in accord with Your will, we ask, too, that the holiness of his life may result in a declaration of sainthood, so that his example might inspire peace, understanding and justice around the world. We ask this through Christ our Lord, for the greater glory of Your Name. Amen.

CATHOLIC QUIZ : This week’s Question: “What is a ‘Chancel’?” The answer to last week’s Question: “What are the ‘Steps’ to the altar?” The sanctuary of the church (the altar area) is approached by a series of steps, symbolic of the ascent to Christ. The altar platform is spiritually understood to be a ‘mountain top’ – recalling Mount Sinai, Mount Carmel, Mount Tabor, the Mount of Olives, and, of course, Calvary. The Latin word for “steps” – ‘graduales’ – from which we get the English words, ‘gradual’, ‘graduation’, ‘grade’ – gave their name to the Psalm verses sung between the Epistle and the Gospel, as the Deacon or Priest ‘ascended’ the steps of the altar to proclaim the Gospel, hence in the Missal: ‘the Gradual’. (The number of steps is not fixed in liturgical law, but it is usually no less than three – the three altar steps at St. Andrew’s are marked with the words “Santos, Santos, Santos” – “Holy, Holy, Holy”.) If you would like to be as smart as the “Quiz Master” — pick up a copy of the Catholic Source Book, available in he Parish Office for only $20!)

SOUL FOOD:

“How can you expect God to speak in that gentle and inward Voice which penetrates the soul, when you

are making so much noise with your rapid reflections? Be silent, and God will speak again.”

- Archbishop Francois Fenelon (1651 – 1715)

Year of St. Joseph: Example to Parents

December 8, 2020—December 8, 2021

“Joseph is an example to parents, whose sacred call is not only to join God in bringing into existence the children that, without you, would not be. The sacred call is also to endow your children with what is most true and most beautiful. The call is to invest in your children without expectation of return – to give recklessly, with only the hope that your children will become who they are call to become.

Saint Joseph, guide all parents into the way of love by which they can endow their children with what is best, most beautiful, and true. Pray that they may be freed from the temptation to expect a return on their investment, other than to see their children exceed us in grace.

Model of Faith:Reflections on the Litany of Saint Joseph by Leonard J. DeLorenzo pg.75.

There WILL NOT be Bible Study on Tuesday, August 24

and August 31 & Wednesday, August 25.

The Group will resume on Wednesday September 1st in the evening.
